    Hello to everybody...

While I was posting my reply in the topic "Songs that you play the most" I remembered some obscure disco songs, so came into my mind the idea of starting a topic about some favourities obscure disco songs.

    Mine are:

Free & red hot - Shelly Black
Sisters and brothers - Rita Fortune
Samson - Ebony, Ivory & Jade.

Well, I think this enough by now.

    1) "Mi Amore" - Desiree' (1978)....this is a lost gem, received some minor clubplay in NY.
    2) "Save And Spend" - Cheryl Barnes (1978)
    3) "Ready Or Not" - Deborah Washington (1978)
    4) "The Other Side Of Midnight" - Marsha Hunt (1978)
    5) "Malaguena" - Pico (1979)
    6) "Workin' And Slavin'" - Midnight Rhythm (1978)....I LOVED this track! Medium popularity in NY, but now it is relegated to trivia question status
    7) "Quartz" - Quartz (1978)....Personally, I could never stand "Beyond The Clouds", but I loved this. The first Goth disco record, I'd say.
"Leave That Boy Alone" - Poussez (1980)....a victim of the anti-disco backlash, not as good as anything on the first album, but better than most of what was around in early 1980
    9) "Mischief" - French Kiss (1979)....still my favorite track from Simon Soussan
    10) "Fire Island" - Dante's Inferno (1979)....good stuff from Ron Dante', the man behind the Archies (believe it or not)

"Nighttime Fantasy" by Vickie Sue Robinson from the NOCTURNA soundtrack (great soundtrack, execrable film). This is easily the best work La Vickie ever did, and the instrumental tracks by the Heaven and Hell Orchestra (which I assume is a line-up of the usual Salsoul/MFSB suspects operating under a nom de plume) are outstanding! This one shouldn't be obscure, but it is.

Here, here, Boodi! "Nighttime Fantasy" is an overlooked classic! Those strings and horns, climbing and swirling, and Vicki's voice swooning and scatting above it all... breathtaking!

And "Workin' and Slavin'" is another awesome, propulsive song. But just a trivia question? It was in heavy rotation on the disco radio station that broadcast out of the little ol' Pittsburgh suburb of Greensburg in 1979. And it charted very high on the Billboard disco charts, if I remember correctly.

(That who-o-o-oshing sound you hear is Marky running to look up the Billboard chart position of "Workin' and Slavin'"! )

    My Borough Mate:

Let's touch on a few records to which were hits in New York on KTU.

Workin' & Slavin' - Midnight Rhythm

I was so pleased to view someone who has great taste in Disco music. This is one hit that was really deep with its instrumentation.
I have the 12" and love it intensely upon its
    spin.

    Panic - French Kiss

The sound effects, string section and all of the rest made this erotic hit one passion to be desired.

    Plato's Retreat - Joe Thomas

A hit in New York for sure, to which other places kept the hustle intact when this song was played in their club.

Feed The Flame - Lorraine Johnson

Even through this day, I get chills when I hear this record. Pumpin' indeed!

Many more in store, but honorable mention goes to I Feel Love - Donna Summer.

Buckle up when you ride the rocket!

So "Workin' and Slavin'", "Nighttime Fantasy" and "Mischief" aren't so forgotten and obscure, then? Cool! I just hope that some savvy music company will release some of these gems on CD sometime soon.
Oh, and one more to add: "Sao Paolo" by Chic. I've championed this downtempo samba/disco jewel on here before. A great track!

Here's one that I loved but never knew the name of for years and years: "The Real Thing" from Daddy Drewdrop. It was the B side, inexplicably, to "Nanu, Nanu" (which I hated, so I assumed that the B side would be another "Chick-A-Boom") so I never programmed it, much to my chagrin. My first post ever in this forum was one in which Marky identified the song tile. What a great track from such an unlikely performer!

I suppose you all chose classy tunes. I'm gonna picka a little piece of cheesy fluff, produced and written by the master of Cheeze Whiz, Bobby Orlando, himself.

This was a song that I heard at Trocadero in the early eighties and always thought was the Bee Gees or Barry or Robin or Maurice solo. One day I went into Aloha Records (before I worked there) and sang this chorus melody sans words to them and Tauntress (Steve) immediately said " Tod Foster".

Indeed it was "Dancin'" by Tod Foster.

During the Napster era, several people asked me about a "Dancin" song by The Bee Gees. I always suggested "You Should Be Dancing" and then said maybe it was Tod Foster. They never seemed to know or care what I was talking about with the TF mention. At least 4 times, they came back and asked about the Tod Foster, and every time THAT WAS the song.

I remember when I finally got the song downloaded on Napster. I had to contact several of these people to let them know that downloads were available.

To make matters a little more interesting this song exists as two different mixes. Unfortunately, both versions share the exact same catalogue number. The promo version is a great remix, while the commercial is the original bla mix. Get the promo. I have this in the Vault under "F" for Foster.

    Hello:

Dj_coolcut thanks for sending me the Van McCoy Rhythms of the World on AG, I was looking for its MP3 version for months.

    Remembered two other very obscure:

    - SOS (All we need is time for love)- Today's People.
    - Once more with feeling - The Whispers (from the Bingo LP)

I listened to this song 25 years ago and has never listed it again, but recently I downloaded it from Audiogalaxy. Thanks AG.

BTW, those who want the Bingo CD its now available from Castle Music at
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/.../discomusiccom

    Boodi--

"Nighttime Fantasy" is on the Sounds Like 54 CD that Marky tipped us off to a few months back.

The CD version is a little different than the 12-inch version I've had for years--more emphasis on the orchestration than the vocal, I'd say--but it's still more than 9 minutes of bliss!

    Yeah, I like tis one.

Discodisk - love your Bobby Womack (the Soul Survivor) track. I remember that one i the clubs. And I've got that Casualeers track - a veritable monster on the Northern scene! (Fyi - I got into the Northern scene from '87 - '89).
Haven't heard that Larry Wu track for ages - that was a good one!

Zeca - I love your choice of soul bands - the Dells / Whatnauts / Whispers etc. The Dells track from 1964 - Oh What A Night (do you know it?) - just sends shivers up my apine every time I hear it!!!

Some of the obscure trax from my collection that I like are:

Finished Touch - The Down Sound
Mastermind - Hustle Busstop (don't own this one)
    Vernon Burch - Fun City
Kool and the Gang - I Remember John W Coltrane (more jazz really from their Kool Jazz album)
Linda Clifford - You Are You Are (from If My Friends Could See Me Now)
Ripple - Sons of The Gods (a real jazz fusion left fielder from the same titled LP that spawned "The Beat Goes On") /
Ripple - Do What You Wanna Do (a blaxploitation track from the same LP)
Charles Earland - Over and Over / Intergalactic Love Song / Driftin'
    Manfredo Fest - Jungle Kitten
Tommy Tate - What Gives You The Right (indie soul dancer)
Jerry Butler - Coolin' Out (just love that track!!)
Webster Lewis - Barbara Anne (rare - only got it on compilation)
Paulette Reeves - Jazz Freak (I wanna buy it)
David Benoit - Life Is A Samba
    O'Jays - I'll Never Forget You (1967)
Al Green - Keep On Pushing Love (from 1992)
Dionne Warwick and the Detroit Spinners - Don't Need Another Love (from ... 2001!!! - a quality soul dancer or what???)
.. and finally a real gem from '67 (I think it was) - Garland Green Ain't That Good Enough For You (how many times do I end a music session with that one?)

If it moves - funk it!!

    Hi JAZZ,

thanx for the kind words about my list, but let me tell you, yours are the real thing! You have good taste, for sure. I have the PAULETTE REEVES' JAZZ FREAK and I like it a lot (very groovy, classy song). COOLIN' OUT by JERRY BUTLER is great too. and KEEP ON PUSHING LOVE by AL GREEN... it's fantastic. The album that contains this song, DON'T LOOK BACK, is great and deserved to be a huge hit. I wonder why AL GREEN didn't release another soul album after DON'T LOOK BACK (and its american edition).

About Dionne Warwick and the Detroit Spinners - Don't Need Another Love: I will look for this one, for sure.

    Peace, JAZZ.

Hey Funky. One of your songs prompted me to get into this mix. I saw Muscle Shoals Horns - Born To Get Down 1976 on your list and boy, what memories. I would love to hear your collection one day, perhaps I would need a week
I also saw a lot of Vernon Burch but I didn't see my favorite, Never Can Find A Way (Hot Love). Let me also add, "Far Out" from Crown Heights Affair, "Use Your Imagination" from Kokomo and "Have A Nice Day" from King Errison.

    Find them and destroy them!

What I'd like to know is Jimmy Sabater's "TO BE WITH YOU" obscure or not? Est-ce Que C'est Chic ou Simplement Ordinaire? Did it make the Billboard charts in the USA - I'm under an impression that I did see it there nosing around early in 1977 or late the previous year. Anyway, the 8 minute version on the 12" is truly extraordinary, the perfect blending of latin and disco elements, coolly sung and arranged. The first 16 bars set the tone for the audio frenzy, there's a thundering drumroll and off you go into a soundscape of lamenting violin weeps, frenetic breaks and dreamlike tranced-out dance configurations. The best ever record to do the latin hustle to, no doubt, what with the way it makes tour hips slightly wiggle but not too much and the way it inspires dramatic stop-and-go movements. -Pretty Maid Company's "Pretty Maid" is another title I've been wondering about. Was it too fluffy to make any impression in New York, say?
