Can someone comment on "The Aviator". I like Scorsese's work a lot but it isn't released here yet.
NRG, please edit your post before Paul finds out! San Diego will be covered with bitter tears!
I'm surprised "Beyond The Sea" didn't get nominated, as I heard a lot of hype over Kevin Spacey's performance. Haven't seen the movie myself.
Has anyone seen any of the nominated films? Any comments?
recommendations?
Looks like Salma didn't get nominated again this year.

I recently saw "The Aviator" and "Million Dollar Baby" and I'm very pleased both were nominated in so many categories.
Cate Blanchette as Kate Hepburn in "The Aviator" is amazing. I usually can only take Leonardo DiCaprio in small doses, but he does do quite a nice job in the movie. I think we have Martin Scorsese that thank for that! The movie is a visual and musical delight with the great sets and music of the era, especially in the nightclubs! The movie is long, almost 3 hours, but I never felt the movie dragged.
If you want to see an INTENSE movie that doesn't go in the direction you think it's going to go, check out "Million". IMHO, Hilary Swank, Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman deserved their nominations! BTW, try not to read any reviews with spoilers about this movie. I'm glad I saw this movie before I heard or read very much about it! Those of you that have seen it will probably know what I mean.
Keefelc, did 'The Aviator' touch on the subject of Howard Hughes' bisexuality? I doubt it as this rarely gets a mention in biopics about him. I would like to see both these films & I hope Martin Scorsese gets his long-overdue Oscar.

R U kiddin'????? :-? :o :-? :o
Howard Hughes is a slave to that pussy, plain & simple in the Scorsese flick.Would you expect anything more from Hollywood? They want this to play in the RED states, doncha know?
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Well, there was a scene with Howard peeing into bottles. Golden shower queen, perhaps??? :o
Otherwise, Mark is absolutely right about the movie!
You know what Johan, the Oscars aint worth discussing unless my woman gets nominated! :D
Well, in addition to them glossing over Howard being a switch hitter, I heard that Howie was also racist. Apparently he bought ABC television network because he liked some show on it. He immediately sold it when he saw an interracial couple on The Dating Game.

The best part of the Oscar nominations announcements was the absolute Royal rejection of Michael Moore’s Trashumentary, even after his all out effort to influence the voting and the fact that Hollywood is heavily infected with the Liberalitis virus he didn’t even get a technical nomination.
Ah what the hell. Since I'm in that kinda mood now I'll respond to this one.
So mixmachine, should Micheal Moore have used payola the way the bush people have to support there point of view?

Martin Scorsese directed some of the best American films ever made, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Mean Streets. Maybe a statue should be given to him for those milestones, not for his latest. But then again, since the nomination for "the best film of the year" has to be given to an American movie, as if films from other countries would somehow be not films as such or at least not as important, maybe The Aviator is still the best of the decidedly lacklustre group on offer since it has a few sequences filled with cinematic bravado. There sure were better American films out last year, not to mention "foreign" films but would one expect the Academy to actually be concerned with genuine creative merits? When you think the American public voted The Passion of the Christ the best movie of the year the whole Oscars farce with its Hallesque displays of ott sentiment and total unembarrassed stupidity does in a way make perfect sense. :o
Jussi: How can you talk about the U.S.A's extended Royal Family in this devilish way?
Surely this is because the catholic church & organised religion generally has so much more power over the way people think in America than in any other Western country? Or are there just more S & M lovers in America? :lol:Originally Written by JussiK
What happened to Fahrenheit 911 and Passion of the Christ? Best picture, documentation, screenplay, actor and the list goes on. Since the public (Moore haters, Bush lovers, Catholic church and Jews screaming anti-semitism) have become soooo politically correct with a strong hold and powerful influence over Hollywood, controversial movies will always be taboo and excluded from the Oscars.
Let's not forget Ray. Excluded were best supporting actress and actor. The woman who played Ray Charles' mom when he was a child had a short but moving and emotional performance that made me say WOW :D ! I don't see how her role can go un noticed but then again its Hollywood, they're very stingy and racist yes I said it racist when it comes to black movies, actors and actresses.

Can't leave my Delight hanging. :D
No doubt Hollywood is racist. Some have said it's because teen aged white boys in Oklahoma don't wanna see Denzel bonin' Ashley Judd. Billy Bob dogin' Halle is OK though :o
On occasion there are movies that break the trend. I just rented and watched AVR (Alien vs Predator). Sanaa Latham's role was refreshing. Same thing for Wesley Snipes' One Night Stand from several years ago. Though if I were Wesley, I'd have stayed with Ming-Na, she's fine. If ya saw the film you'd know what I mean.![]()
As for the Oscars, I don't watch it. It often hypes films I have little interest in seeing and it seems to offer a voyeuristic view of a party none of us are really welcome to.
