    Brainstorm Vs. Betty Wright: "LIRMG"

Re: Lovin' Is Really My Game

IF ya play the Brainstorm version and then play the supposedly "live" Betty Wright version...the lead vocal sounds very similar. I always presumed that Miss Betty did the lead vocal on the Brainstorm record and then did it "live" on her own LP. Now, I guess it was actually Belita Woods on the Brainstorm record. Right? :o

Anyone know the reason Betty Wright jumped to cover this? Is there a "hidden connection" here that I don't see? Do you hear the similarity in the vocal? I've had these two versions back to back on a tape I made back in tha day and the similarity always is striking to me.

I wish I could reveal something juicy Marky but I know of nothing unusual about this. One could always speculate that maybe this song might have written with Betty in mind as the vocalist but I'm just tossing that out there. By the way, I'm sure you know Sylvester covered this song too.

How successful was LIRMG in the UK? I bought it later on in it's career and got the 12" red vinyl version - pretty rare or quite common? Either way it still holds for me!

Never did that much business, so far as I can remember. I don't have a 12" copy (surprise) although I do have another by them, which I never played. It may have been given to me by CBS, which used to have a Southampton office and got into having a local record pool for a very short while.

Believe it or not, LIRMG is on a shortlist of tracks that I must buy on CD at some point, just to hear what all you guys are on about. What odds will you give me that I'll like it? 10/1 against anyone?

Hey Quinny. As one of those guys who loves LIRMG, I'm going to recommend 54. The movie and the soundtrack have LIRMG. Though the movie didn't play much of the song, I think contextually you'll get a better appreciation for it. And speaking of context, I really liked the way Tommy Boy remastered the music on the soundtrack. In terms of flow and sound quality, they captured the context IMHO. There are 2 soundtracks from this movie. I don't have the one with LIRMG but I feel confident that that cd was done as well as the one I have.
By the way, the full 12" version is not on that cd. It's near impossible to find that version on cd. The vinyl is still pretty easy to find.

    from AMG:

Re: LOVIN' IS REALLY MY GAME

The talented Detroit band's second recording — and it's a barn-burner. Belita Woods, hardly the shy vocalist, brags about her love prowess, telling all that "lovin' is really her game." An irresistible beat gets better as the song rolls; the climatic, bring-the-cows-home (no wonder I likes it!!!) :P ending features Woods and crew whooping it up for a virtual soul fest. Written by the band's two female members — Belita Karen Woods and Trenita Womack — the 1977 release checked out at number 14 on the R&B charts. It's also done by Betty Wright, but the original is the best version.

    Available on:

    1977 Stormin' - Brainstorm ( RCA )
1996 Heavy Breathing: The Crunch High-Energy Workout (4:47) RCA

Paul: Thought I'd wait until I hear the CD. Wouldn't like you guys to have yet another reason to hate me. Although with soooooo many 'fans' here already, a few more wouldn't make much difference, but I do care for ya's, I really do. :D

Paul: Be careful.....be very careful. :o

I just needed to let some folks know how considerate and thoughtful I really is, especially as I couln't give a rat's about this beloved track. I'm only buying it to be as complete as possible and just in case a zimmer framed, disco lovin' cowboy asks me for it in 20 years time, when I'll be doing teadances for all the ol' folks like me. Somehow, that's just gotta be my fate.

No worries Quinny. Been hated before, and I'm sure I'll say something else later that will piss off somebody
Every so often, maybe 2 or 3 times a year I get in one of these little pissing contest here. Get's my juices flowing and provides comedy relief for those reading the back and forth banter.

The CD arrived today and in the name of education and scientific evaluation I gave the Brainstorm track a listen.

I'd say it's a needle drop job, but fairly well done in so much as clicks are hard to detect and the sound quality is less distorted than some, BUT the track is in mono. So if mono doesn't do it for ya, this CD won't be an instant hit.

Here is the tracklisting for Mastermix - DISCO CLASSIC CUTS REMASTERED - CC8
    1. Brainstorm - Lovin' Is Really My Game (7:32 12" Version)
    2. Brothers Johnson - Stomp(6:22 12" Version)
    3. Crown Heights Affair - You Gave Me Love (5:50 12" Version)
    4. D:Train - You're The One For Me (5:07 12" Version)
    5 Earth Wind & Fire & The Emotions - Boogie Wonderland (8:22 12" Version)
6 Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough (6:05 12" Version)
    7 Lipps Inc - Funkytown (3:59 12" Version)
    8.Edwin Starr - Contact (7:12 12" Version)
    8. Amii Stewart - Knock On Wood (6:13 12" Version)
    10. Donna Summer - I Feel Love (1982 Megamix) (8:14 12" Version)
    11. Sylvester With Patrick Cowley - Do You Wanna Funk? (6:50 12" Version)
    12. Whispers - And The Beat Goes On (6:44 12" Version)

BTW: Amii Stewart is also in mono and possibly a needle drop. All the rest are from master tapes of some description, so far as I could tell, after a cursory listen.

    Hey Quinny.
Mono sucks. Did they have to go out their way to copy the records in mono I wonder :o
I would still recommend the 54 cd since you seem to have received a cd of questionable quality.
Anyway, as I mentioned I recently got my cd with the 12" version of LIRMG. I believe LIRMG on that cd was also a needle drop. At the very beginning I can faintly hear pops, though the rest of the cd sounded clean with the bass boost I mentioned. By the way, the ebay seller wrote this:

You are bidding on a sealed PROMOTIONAL COPY CD with 10 smash Disco hits. Released by a CD pool for Club and Mobile Disc Jockeys to promote past classic hits. All tracks are the FULL LENGTH versions. CD quality. NOT RECORDED FROM VINYL ALBUMS. The artists, titles and times are as follows: 1. ODYSSEY - NATIVE NEW YORKER (5:28) 2. BRAINSTORM - LOVIN IS REALLY MY GAME (7:39) 3. GARY'S GANG - KEEP ON DANCING (7:39) 4. LAURA BRANIGAN - SELF CONTROL (5:02) 5. KEITH BARROW - TURN ME UP (7:38) 6. CHANGE -SEARCHING (8:03) 7. DC LARUE - CATHEDRALS (6:59) 8. DON RAY - GOT TO HAVE LOVING (8:19) 9. HEATWAVE - BOOGIE NIGHTS (5:04) 10. THE TRAMMPS - DISCO INFERNO (10:54).

Paul: From a DJ's perspective mono never really bothered me. If anything, mono records could actually sound better over a loud system, especially if speakers were placed in less than ideal positions. It's only on headphones that mono sounds a tad claustophobic to my ageing ears.

That promo CD looks interesting and the Keith Barrow track is re-edited or cut short of the original 12" length. Fair enough as the 12" went on for well over 11 minutes. A great track, eh?

Hey Quinny. I am very pleased with the cd. I guess I would give it a solid 7 out of 10, certainly worth the $11.50 I paid for it.
Now back to LIRMG, what is your verdict?

Paul: Can't really say that lovin' grabs me at all. I played it once, didn't particularly like it and will probably only return to it rarely. All my CDs are in storage at the moment.
