    College radio show...

Very soon, hope to start my own radio show in college. I hope I can enlighten students with the disco sounds rather that punk that is constantly played. I think I will do a 70's, 80's, 90's and today's disco kind of show. I will play commercial tracks along with some obscure disco tracks as well. Any suggestions or recommendations will help a lot. Thanks!

My 2 cents for what it's worth mixtape would be not to make the disco selections from the 70s and 80s too obscure. It my play well for us officianados but I'm thinking it might through off the masses as to what disco is. After all, there is a reason why some cuts are obscure :D
Of course if you've been here a while you can tell I have a few favorites, Cococmotion, Boss, He's The Greatest Dancer, Dance With You, etc. I guess I would also lean towards stuff that had a lot of strings. If nothing else, to counter the bass heavy material today.
    I'm done...for now 8)

be prepared for a lot of the college kids to be walking around your campus imitating john travolta's dance floor moves from saturday night fever

many of the college crowd (my current age group) are a bunch of dumb stupid fucking assholes and are a complete waste of a generation

every racial group. male and female what a fucking shame.

    we all suck

the outlook for generation y does not look good

even today's self proclaimed punks are a disgrace to the original punk scene

Why not borrow my idea which isn't original, and play a modern song which samples an oldie, then play the original version afterwards. Thereby, educating the unwashed.
Don't do that irritating thing some DJs do, which is not name the tracks they've played.  :P

I have been given a one-off slot on a pirate radio station that plays mainly house music, I know the listeners won't want to hear the usual disco classics, but I don't want to make it too obscure and 'out there'. I'm thinking along the lines of tracks such as 'You & I' - Rick James, 'Standing on the Verge etc.'. - Platinum Hook, maybe 'Dance With You' - Carrie Lucas - do you agree or am I thinking along the wrong lines? I have total 'editorial' freedom on this but dont want to er, 'make a hash of it'

For a pirate I would say DIG DEEP, but include a few that have recogniseable hooks via the House stuff that any potential listeners would have been listening to at other times.
If you're in London.......you won't be able to put on any kind of show that would be too deep for some folks, eh?

Yep, it's London - so I'm concerned - my problem is that I'm really not up to speed with House music - what people have been using....

My experience with listening to House music is that if your gonna play mostly that, ya gotta be creative in the mixes. Listening to it straight up can get monotonous. When I spent a lot of time in NYC in the late 80s, radio stations BLS and KISS used work those songs on the weekend nights. They mixed the **** outta them and it sounded real good.
Speaking of KISS 98.7FM, I'm sure they have a compilation cd of some their work. That might be a good place to start since you asked Headlamp. By the way, Dance With You works anytime :)

Paul is right, Spellbound is wrong

    To mixtape:

The best contemporary disco song to play at the moment would be "Canned Heat" by Jamiroquai since it's been much talked about due to its appearance in a recent movie, "Napoleon Dynamite".

As far as the classics, I endorse paul's ideas about playing "Cocomotion", "The Boss", "He's the Greatest Dancer", and "Dance With You".

From the band Firefly the songs "My Desire" and "You Can Lead Me" are super for a disco radio show. Here are just a few ideas for songs that can appeal to lots of people: "You've Been Gone" by Crown Heights Affair, "Let's Spend Some Time" and "Just a Touch of Love" by Slave, "See You When I Git There" by Lou Rawls, "Hold Tight" and "Nighttime Fantasy" by Vicki Sue Robinson, and "Right in the Socket" by Shalamar.

    Are you in the USA?

Ignore Spellbound's irrational hatred of Generations "Y" and "X" based on generalizations. This is the second time I saw him mouth off like that. He quickly goes from "many of the college crowd" to "we all suck".

Come on guys...Don't underestimate Londoners like that.
We always welcome certain foreign artists, that don't even get a look in their own country. I can agree if you're talking about the pub/club chain crowd  who just wanna hear chart stuff. But people like moi, don't mind the odd obscurity.

In all my years of spinning and trying to enlighten the masses beyond commercialism there is one thing I have found. The majority will not appreciate it, however, you will have a chosen few that will dig it and those will make it worthwhile. Therefore, feed it to them and the ones that are truly hungry for something different will eat it up.

    Easy,

Thanks for the advice everyone - I will dig deep in my collection and go for the tunes that made me go 'YES!!' when I first heard them. It will be an experience and at least I'll get to plug my monthly gig to a wider audience!

Thank You for all the great advice. I agree with the cocomotion, and dance with you tracks. I am in the USA. Hartford, CT to be exact. I was thinking of playing stuff like Shape:UK - Lola's Theme, and some commercial tracks that also work from the 90s like Real McCoy. I was also thinking of playing tracks like dance with you, cocomotion, a lover's holiday, even some old madonna and freestyle which always works commercially i think.

That's cool, but that takes it out of the purely disco category. If you're ever in the Danbury area I could lend you some CDs of old and new disco in case I have anything "different" you'd like to play.

Will your radio show be streamable from the Web while it's live? I get good reception on Hartford-area stations like WRCH FM but doubt I get any college stations from Hartford on any radio.
