What were your top 3 DISCOveries for January?

I know January is not technically over yet but by the time I get back on here it will be.
I have been absolutely obsessed with

1."SHAKE YOUR GROOVE THING" 12" - Peaches & Herb. Sure its commercial but this is a 6:34 minute stomper and I love it so much. I found it on "Priscilla Queen of the Desert " soundtrack (I really wanted it on cd so that I could groove with my discman). I realised that I really like the production work of Freddie Perren which led me to buy..

2."SOMETHING SPECIAL" - The Sylvers. This album features gems like "Disco Showdown" and "Mista Guitar Man". "Hot Line" is a classic.

    3. "PART 3" - KC And The Sunshine Band. Hits aside, "Lets Go Party" absolutely rocks, its funky, druggy and catchy as hell. I heard Eurotechno group Scooter had sampled "Shake Your Booty" recently.
Other sampled songs I'm sure you are all aware of are "Weekend'' by Michael Gray (Oliver Cheathams "Get Down Saturday Night" - 1983) and INS Project use David Josephs "You Can't Hide Your Love" also 1983.

FINAL WORD> Carrie Lucas' "Dance With You" is my FAVOURITE SONG OF ALL TIME and I will NEVER get sick of hearing it!

For recent obsessions or discoveries? For obsessions has been Louis Love "Manhattan" (which is unfortunatly an unreleased track as ive found out that we'll never find on vinyl lol).

As for new/old discoveries for the month that were totaly new to me..

Ganymed - Future World LP (1979)
Ganymed - Takes You Higher LP (1978)

both of these are pretty hardcore electro eurodisco on the order of Giorgio meets Kraftwerk..and the one song "We Like You" on the Future World LP is a total rip off of Cerrone's Supernature (right down to the "sweet drums" section) but done more hardcore and is great!

my other discovery for the month (and I even made a post about it) was a 12'' promo of Peter Gabriel "D.I.Y." which has a disco remix of it on it.

One record that I've rediscovered in the past few days, after a gap of 25 years is KEITH BARROW - TURN ME UP. I'd completely forgotten about this fantastic, 117 BPM, insistant, funky, disco opus with an 'I Wish' type of bassline, until I came across it in the attic. In some ways it's no surprise that I used to like it so much, as it was produced by Michael Stokes and co-written by him with Ron Matlock. Michael Stokes was part responsible for Morning Noon & Night's 'Bite Your Granny' (an all time funky fave) and Creative Source among others.

Although 11.38 in length it keeps me groovin', which is something very rare for me. The best part of the disc has to be the instrumental jam that more or less constitutes the middle third of the track. Yes please, more tracks like this!!!

While cleaning the cob webs off of some vinyl, I came across these. Ahhhh, it's great to hear these after so long.

    Rhoddes Kids - Voo-Doo Magic
Brother to Brother - In The Bottle
    Pat Lundy - Party Music
    Gentle Persuasion - Litterbug
Morningside Tribe - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine
    De-Lite-Ful - Forget That Girl
De Blanc - Oh No, Not My Baby
Dooley Silverspoon - Let Me Be The #1
David Barreto - On And On
Abaco Dream - Life And Death In The G&A
Executive Suite - You Believed In Me
    Coalitions - I Don't Mind Doin' It

    Gotta love the music

And two days ago I found NORMA JEAN WRIGHTs cassette for 50c in an op shop! I love "Saturday" to bits and "I Like Love" although I can't help but think of the recent cover by Solitaire whenever I listen to it. Hers is an expectedly superior version.

What a great topic because this happens often. Something you have not heard in awhile that sounds really good. Three that I have found this month that I rediscovered on New Year's Eve are:

    High - Skyy ('80)
Bad times - Captain Rapp ('84)
Come on and dance - The Saturday Night Band ('78)

one more that I'd like to add to this list is on the slow side:

    Forever more- Enchantment

This is the beauty of classics, they reinvent themselves. :P

    Easy,

HARD TO FIND 45'S ON CD: SWEET SOUL SOUNDS

I bought this CD from Amazon Marketplace for one song that I have been playing over and over:
YOUR'E THE ONE by LITTLE SISTER.
6:39 worth of glory. The sound is flawless. A treasure.
I have the original 45 on Stone Flower, which I played to death way back in 1973. Part I was on the A side and Part II was on the B side.

Disco-vered and bought some excellent stuff over the past weeks, things that I was not very familiar with but took me to heaven:

    1. J.B's : "Rock groove machine" (Groove Machine-1979/9:03)
"Georgia peach disco" (Groove Machine-1979/10:18 )
    2. Southside Movement: "Ain't gonna watch you no' mo'"
    (Moving South-1975/6:15)
    3. Brass Construction: "Dance" (Brass Construction-1975/9:46)
    4. Caress: "Catch the rhythm" (Danny Krivit-Edits by Mr. K-2003/
    11:02)
    5. Claudja Barry: "Love for the sake of love" (Salsoul TDM-2004/
    7:46)

And I'll be hunting again this week!

    Three great finds this month

Noel - "Is There More To Life Than Dancing". Written & Produced by the Mael brothers of Sparks, this is disco-fabulousness I didn't even know existed. Ditto "The Night They Invented Love".

The Exciters "Blowing Up My Mind" - ok, its really a Northern Soul tune, but a damn fine one at that

The Shapeshifters - "Back To Basics" - a new record that sounds 25 years old. And that's a good thing.

Well, I did very well in January and intentionally waited till now to respond because I had one more cd that came in 1/31/05.
That cd was is a dj promo cd with "Lovin Is Really My Game", the 12" version. I'm still auditioning it and aside from excess midbass boost, it sounds pretty good.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Brits really have an appreciation for music that the general population here in the states don't. I picked up 2 cds that are British based. One from Vox, some kind of promotional cd. I originally purchased it to get Time Of The Season. To my pleasant surprise the cd also had the extended version of Bus Stop. The other cd is Soul Spectrum: Radio Sessions . Bought it to get 9 minutes of Runaway Love. Also got with it as a nice bonus Act Like You Know which is not on the Best of Fat Larry's Band cd I have. And finally, I must have as many Diana Ross music as Marky now. :D I had to replace my 12" Boss cause it has turned up missing. Anyway I bought the remastered(?) Boss cd. A bonus track on that cd is the original 12" release of that song.
I guess I made out and I didn't spend a whole lot of money.

Paul: Is that the Fatback's Bus Stop or (it can't be true, so it won't be  ) Oliver Sain's? What's the name of the CD?

Looks like I'll have that CD with Brainstorm tomorrow or the nest day. Mastermix Classics Vol. 8 and I picked it up for $9.00.

Hey Quinny, it's Fatback's Bus Stop. When I get home I pull the cd and give you the proper name for that cd.
I'm gonna look for the Mastermix Classics right now. Thanks. :D

Paul: I knew it rang a bell somewhere. I already have this CD and only bought it for Bus Stop, which I already had on LP. Personally, I've always preferred the UK 7" version (presumably the same as the U.S one) of the tune.

Fatback's entire Raising Hell album which includes Party time is great. It's available on a Southbound CD which is in its second pressing.
PS: Musique stole that Party time riff for "In the bush".
