....
Saturday night and the weather sucks so the Missus and I are staying home tonight. I just popped my copy of "Thank God It's Friday" into the vcr and I will pour myself an ice cold Johnny Walker Black and dream of coolness past. 8)
....
I was out dancing last night :o (I fight the age thing as much as I can). And I was talking to a woman my age who was there with her husband (She must have been one HOTTIE when she was young) anyway we were reminiscing about all of the pot we smoked on Disco club dancefloors back in the day. The young folks and the old folks were shocked! They absolutely could not believe what we were telling 'em.
I like SNF - that's me and the crew I hung with, though we were a little more diversified (one was gay, a few were black and one gf was Puerto Rican). TGIF best represents the upper scale Disco Clubs we went to and "54" best represents the antics that I enjoyed so much. :o
.....

That's what ended Disco - we just burned ourselves out!!!!!!!
But seriously, I think demographics had more to do with Disco's demise than anything else. I know when I got married I had been at it for more than 5 years and just couldn't do it anymore. Our poppers were amyl nitrate. I had friends who snorted so much coke then... I stayed away from it and stuck pretty much to my favorite which was Cognac and pot.
.....
Cognac and pot was my favorite. VSOP only. If there was only VS on the bar I'd switch to Jack Daniels and pot. I couldn't tell you the number of times I literally fell out of a car when the door was opened for me after the night's fun and games. :o
Or going right to work Saturday morning for 7:00 after partying ALL night. How I suffered!!!!!!!!!!!
Or the times one of the crew got their stash dumped on the floor. Or the loaded drinks we'd get.
Or the times I woke up with someone of the fairer gender with a "What's your name?" or "Where'd me meet?" or "Haven't we met before?" Jeez they're 50 year old mothers and grandmothers now. Or the times the urologist would say "What are you doing to yourself?"
Is it any wonder Disco came to an end? If it hadn't very, very few of us would have survived.
And even considering my age today I'd do it all again in a heartbeat! :D
Heres a drug and alcohol viewpoint from someone thats 21. I have been listening to disco ever since my mother introduced it to me at 13. Since those early commercial discoverings, I have branched out in to a much wider range of disco. There is only very rarely anything 70s disco clubwise where I am from (Brisbane, Australia) so most often I just groove alone in my room, as most of my friends don't like it. I found that drink and drugs don't neccessarily make disco better, but more fun. there were so many feel good chants and hypnotic grooves that being off my nut makes it a really cool experience? I agree with a comment I saw on this site that said the young are too uptight to enjoy the freedoms that we had then. And I agree, modern life is dull, thats why I'm a disco duck. I go to modern clubs with my friends but the music which is half rip-offs of disco anyway starts to bore me. The 70s had the beautiful big string orchestras, the drums were real and double handclaps to die for!So in conclusion, do what you do just know the risks..and keep on dancin! Sorry for rambling.
Boogie Nites, no doubt you would have had a ball with us.
Around where I live smoking pot was as common as drinking beer and the authorities really didn't give a **** about it then.
I think the law that made it a controlled substance in Massachusetts was passed in 1970 and it really took the Mass. authorities several years to get their **** together regarding enforcement.
We smoked weed in the Disco clubs, we smoked in movie theatres, we smoked weed in the book stores (especially The Harvard Coop :o ) we smoked pot walkin' down the street.
Some of us had limits and some didn't and even those of us who did went pretty far. The '70s were a time of personnal freedom the likes of which we'll never see again. America used to be a free country.
Ahh, Discoman. I feel ya man. I don't know...maybe we're getting old but the lifestyle from those days seems almost impossible today.
You mentioned the Harvard Coop. Damn that brings back memories. Who knows I might of ran by ya or sparked up one with you there or in Harvard Square. Of course I had to buy my books first then take a toke after.
You are also right about the ease with which you could light up a joint. Funny thing is the most we ever got stopped for was having a open container of beer. The Northeastern Univ. police had us pour it out and they took the rest of our case. Assholes, I just know they took it for themselves
Find them and destroy them!
.....
I'll be 53 this week (B. '52). Ya, the worst the Fuzz would do to you IF they caught you with a open container of beer would be to make you pour it out and they'd confiscate the rest of it.
Summer '71 Harvard Coop: I liked to read "Big Ass Comics" then.
R. Crumb's artwork was just a gas! Talk about bein' a stoner...
You couldn't get "Big Ass" in Worcester because it had morally corrupting material within it's covers. So my crew and I would go to Harvard Sq. and the Coop to get our "Big Ass" fix. This one Saturday night we go in the Coop absolutely stoned on our asses. I pick up a copy of "Big Ass" off the rack and go to the counter to pay for it. Well the clerk, who was a lttle hottie, was tokin' a J and just as stoned as I was says "I love R. Crumb" so we have this stoner converstaion about the social commentary of R. Crumb's illustrations and how much of a slut Honeybunch Kaminski was... I'll never forget that girl. Or that night... Harvard Sq, in those days: You could get stoned by just walkin' through the Square :o
I'm 53 this week too. Feels soooo much older than 52.
The 13'th for me how about you Quinny?
Really cool to see so many people that "lived to tell the story"! God bless all of you! As Sylvester once said "This is a fab-u-lous place.....look at all the fab-u-lous people......c'mon let's party."
It was a magical time, so glad I was there, so glad I am still here now......It is hard to explain to the twenty-something "E" and "Tina" crowd how incredible the first wave of clubbing was! You had to be there.
Cheers!
Same for me. Happy Birthday.Originally Written by DiscoMan
Happy Birthday Quinny!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll have a Johhny Walker Black to your health!
Happy birthdaysssssssss guysssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need youngsters like you!!!!
Thanks Giovanni! :D
If you wanted to have a good time back in the day go out with me and my crew!
Other than physical limits imposed by being 53 I ain't changed a bit. 8)
I take it that this is a 8 or 12 year old blend that they serve up for the export market, as I don't recall seeing it in the UK. It reminds me of how a J&B was considered the most luxurious whisky to drink when I DJ'd in Spain. Truth was, that it was a very average whisky that just happened to be incredibly well marketed.Originally Written by DiscoMan

In my display cabinet, there's a 67 year old single malt (45 years old when bottled) that I'm keeping for my 60th birthday. Just hope the precious nectar doesn't evaporate too much by then.
It's a 12 year old export blend.
I like Johnny Walker "Scotch" whiskey (more so than Pinch and Chivas) and American corn whiskey - Kentucky Bourbon like Jim Beam Black or Maker's Mark or Tennessee whiskey like my pal Jack Daniels :D A glass of Jack Daniels and some good weed is a high high! And provides one with a very mellow evening.
Quinny, can you folks in the UK purchase American Kentucky Bourbon or Tennessee whiskey?
Absolutely. I have a litre bottle of Jim Beam waiting to be opened, someday. You gotta try some single malts though. They're not entirely without fault, but I remember when i visited my brother in Canada a few years back. I took him a bottle of 30 year old malt and it was soooo smooth, compared to any 12 year old malt or blend that I've ever tasted.
Southern Comfort and Coca Cola used to be a very 'in' drink, especially with the ladies, when I were a mere slip o' a lad. Guys used to know they were probably onto a winner if they managed to hook up with a woman who drank that.
Back when I was a bit of a lad as well I drank Glenlivet, Glenfydach (spelling?) and Usquebagh (spelling?) as there is no Celtic blood in me I have a tough time with some of these Celtic names. I like single malts as well. Actually I like most whiskies - American or Brit. :D
I had a greatgrandmother whose hometown was well decorated with English scalps in colonial times... :o
Anyone tried Taliskar? (may be incorrectly spelled)
It's a wonderfully smooth malt whiskey.
