They played "Spunky" (uptempo) and "Sign of the Times" (mellower) at Trocadero in SF.

He was responsible for "Take me to the Mardi Gras", a 1975 track that is one of the most influencial breakbeats ever

Westchester Lady is a really good track especially the 12+ minute live version on Casino Lights '99.

I remember playing the following by him:

Sign of The Times (loved this track, right in my groove)
    Westchester Lady
    Nautilus
    Heads

but he was more influential as a producer than as an artist, especially quite a few tracks that came out on Tappan Zee, on which was almost any release was regarded as like a sure sign of a good JazzFunk crossover record for a relatively brief period in '78 going into '79, or thereabouts. He was involved with a hell of a lot of folks then.

Didn't Bob do the music for some late 70s TV show? It might have been some kind of disco like theme?

Bob James did the theme for "Taxi"...not a dance-oriented track, however.

I always preferred 'The Steamin Feelin' to 'Sign Of The Times', also a Rod Temperton tune from the same '82 LP.

I love Bob's smooth jazz like "Playin Hookey" from the late 1990's. That song really had a good groove. It was danceable but very radio friendly. My all time favorite from him is "Far from turtle" from 1990's Grand Piano Canyon Lp. That track is a very soft ballad that uses a music box. He is a very eclectic artist whose work includes classical like the SwanLp, small trio work, TV themes, smooth jazz as solo artist and with Fourplay, and a vocal album with his daughter Hilary. He also did an album with Kurk Whalum called Joined at the hip and atleast 2 albums with Earl Klugh.

Bob James definetely has a knack for writing a good song and many of the ones already mentioned have reached classic status by now.
Still, I have mixed feelings about his soloing though...they do feel over rehearsed and almost pre-composed at times (if you get my drift).
