A new source for the "disco" term?

Fooling around in the IMDB site I found this West German TV show which ran from 1971-1982. Apparently it was a "Top of the Pops"-like musical with some artists doing playback and others performing live. It was conducted by some Ilja Richter (a popular actor-comedian there, according to IMDB) and featured ABBA 12 times, starting in 1973. It also had Olivia Newton-John in its first year of airing.

And what whas the show's name since 1971? "DISCO". :o

Were these guys prophets or what?

"Disco" was not a real discoshow. It featured sketches by Ilja, German artists (genre MOR and C&W) and then of course some real disco-artists but only one or two during each show. If he was the inventor of the "Disco"??? I have my doubts :D

    To give you an idea:

The strange thing is that it has become a cult-show now and German television regularly broadcasts old episodes, which are very interesting to watch coz' only my grandfather had an antenna at that time which could capture German television back in those days and always let me watch those shows that were aired around 7 o'clock on saturday evenings.

Now the real German discoshow was "Musikladen", presented by Manfred Sexauer where they would play underground stuff, early hard rock AND disco and the show also featured topless go-go girls who, for a young kid like me, were very interesting (Yesssssssssss). In the following link you can read what it was all about. It's in German but you can look at the lists of artists that were played at that time.

And finally, German police-series like "Derrick" and "Tatort" were also famous for their included nude-scenes (hey guys, remember, we are speaking about the early 70's) and more, they had scenes in which were played early hardcore eurodisco like Moroder, Donna, Munich Machine, early Boney M and that was where I heard those erotic sounds first.

here the direct links to the playlists of "Disco" and "Musikladen":

    playlist "Disco"

    playlist "Musikladen"

Of course I didn't see the shows in the 70s cause I'm too young but I've seen some episodes when they were repeated and I think Musikladen was much better. Ilja Richter always tried to be funny but wasn't (but back in the days he was quite famous and also played in some german movies).

But it's really a funny fact that this show started in 1971 with this name - but I can't imagine discomusic could be called so because of this show

Here in the US VH1 Classic always shows performances from both these shows and claims them to be original music videos (which for many of them, real ones do exsist lol). So this "DISCO" thing was in fact the name of the show! I see now, cause ive seen a ton of rock performances with that title behind em and thought...they musta called everything disco back in the early days before disco was disco LOL. Which in a way, is true..and I mentioned this a while back in some other post...about an 8 track supposid "disco" comp/mix from 1975 which contained BTO, Styx and a few 1 hit wonder pop hits in with the early soul disco LOL.
