Harold Melvin's-The Love I lost
Producer's Gamble and Huff originally had this track as a slow song in 12/8 time. They sped it up because too much material was ballad oriented and sounded like the Dells.
At the root of the question, is what really defines disco? For me, disco is a color on the template of black soul music. In the mid 70's records were cut in this fashion as opposed to blues, quiet storm, funk, or boogaloo.
Although music is eclectic, the progressive styles in 1970's dance music originated in the black communities of NYC and Philly. This style was merely watered down for the masses and later hi-jacked and soon abandoned by Gays.
Good choice.
Let's not forget Vince Montana Jr. and the innovative blend of latin and soul rythms he developed in the late '60s early '70s which in turn can trace their roots to the early '60s. I think Montana himself claims that the first Disco record was Chubby Checker's "The Twist" from '62 (?).
3 months earlier released than HAROLD MELVIN - Love I Lost
was
INTRUDERS - I'LL ALWAYS LOVE MY MAMA 6/73
the disco sound came out possibly from Philly
