    Revisiting Isaac Hayes

I just picked up Universal's reissue on CD of Mr. Hayes' NEW HORIZON lp. (THANKS, KEEFE!! :D )

I was floored to find the Tom Moulton mix of "Moonlight Lovin' (Mènage Á Trois)" is unedited here. That is, it runs 16:14 on the CD as opposed to 10:02 on the vinyl.

Is this something I missed B-I-T-D? Was this longer version out there on a 12" or maybe available as an import? Really surprised to be hearing this now for the first time. Also curious as this has always been one of my favorite 'sleaze' pieces and now I have more of it! :D The vinyl I have is Polydor USA, PD-1-6120, 1977.

There WAS a Polydor 12" (I can remember the red label) with on the back-side "Stranger in paradise". My cousin owned it and we played it a lot when we were youngsters, especially the part where the girls are whispering "Ménage à trois". The exact time? I don't know but it was looooooooooooong!

It's one of those forgotten Isaac Hayes-treasures and it IS sleazy.

    Very sexadelic soul!

You're welcome, Nicky! However, don't forget we wouldn't know about this album if it wasn't for you (when you pointed out to Mark and I where "Strangers In Paradise" came from). Very nice to know Hip-o Select is truly trying to put out some great stuff. I could easily go broke purchasing all the treasures on that site. If that pesky Universal Intern had did any type of background research, she/he would have promoted the releases on the Hip-o site to us. Then that person would have gained credibility with us instead of being mocked!

A popular topic of discussion it seems in the disco era! :D The Bob Crewe Generation and Gotham also released different songs called "Menage a trois".

Beverly Robinson also did a song of the same name, but I don't know whether this is the same as one of the other versions, or different again.

"Stranger in Paradise" is my favourite Isaac Hayes track - it's a masterpiece that seems too often overlooked.

I've seen the 12" myself (always expensive so never bought it) but I don't recall it being that long. Maybe I just didn't notice the extra length (stop sniggering at the back).

Nicky, what exactly is the difference with the album version except its longitude. At this moment I can only finf the 9.59 version which itself is already gorgeous!

(BTW mix it with "I love you that's all" from the "Joy"-album and you gonna have a funk good time!)

I love this album.. I have it on LP, but I'm definitely gonna get this CD.. I didn't expect them to reissue it so soon, since the album versions of all the songs (except Stranger In Paradise) have been available on CD for a while.. so it's a good thing they found that 16 minute version 8)

Thanks for the tip guys, i love Polydor era Isaac Hayes ! Before i realised 'New Horizon' was only available from hip-o select i had a quick look on my usual sites and was delighted to discover that two of his other Polydor albums 'For The Sake Of Love' (1978) and 'Don't Let Go' (1979) were resissued as a 2-on-1 by Australian label Raven Records early last year ! Digitally remastered with liner notes and exactly what i needed awaiting me on my desk on returning to work yesterday - thanks again for leading me to this !
