DISCODISK Good luck with the tidy up![]()
ive just moved house for the third time in three years and have decided after some comments from friends about living in chaos with so much junk [their words not mine :o i mean how could anyone consider record sales lists going back to 1974 junk :o  ] its true i know what they are saying so ive decided to have a de-clutter..well a little teeny one so when friends come round i usually have a box ready for the trash and say 'SEE THIS IS GOING IN THE BIN SO DONT SAY THOSE HURTFULL THINGS AGAIN' :D no seriously i have thrown loads away but it dosnt seem to make a dent it STILL all looks the same im attacking all the videos about 8 boxes and everything except good music tapes is going,im terrible for not labeling so im having to go through every one and have ruined one video in the process' even my 392 episodes of the avengers are on the hit list, ill probibly be seen kneeling on the floor in the town by the bin sobbing 'mrs peel........ were needed'! hey ive just had a brainwave i can get em back on d.v.d :D :D :D
its quite incredible the amount of disco/soul/northern soul/motown things that have been shown over the years stuff ive totally forgotten about, ive even found some motown & soul shows that were made and never aired in the states that i aquired from an english guy that worked there in the 60s and borrowed them :P
tonight im watching channel 4's rhthym divine the history of disco quite old now but one of the best made, did this air in the states? this was actually available at the time to buy on video due for d.v.d release please! im half way through and have just pulled out some interesting quotes and one quite important one for the u.s members who couldnt understand why the english boys didnt hustle......
DAVE GODIN [R.I.P] AND NICE TO SEE THE DOCUMENTRY CALLING HIM 'THE EXPERT' :P discoteque was a french word originally, chubby checkers record 'at the discoteque' was very important in getting the word into peoples conciousness, but the scene certainly existed long long before.except it wouldnt have had that handy label to discribe it....
JUDY WEINSTEIN..as far as the record companies were concerned we were a pain in the ass, they hated disc jockys, they hated us coming up to the doors banging and asking for records so people like mel cherin, vince aletti and david mancuso got together with a few other d.js and said give us the records well give them out..
on the paradise garage
IAN LEVINE ..but it always dealt with a strong black voice because of larry levan who was the main d.j and larry created this garage sound...
JUDY WEINSTEIN...absolutely it wasnt even underground it was a city unto itself...
on northern soul
BABY FORD i used to go to wigan casino to check out the adidas bag crowd it was a big influence the northern soul scene like an alternative society..
on the southern clubs
PETE TONG D.J the goldmine and the lacy lady, with that scene you had this fashion thing developing of people wearing safety pins, plastic macs and bin liners, people think that punk and people that were into punk came from another planet, but it actually evolved out of the soul scene really....
on disco going over ground
VINCE ALETTI the kind of records that were coming out at the time of saturday night fever were so commercial and so pop a lot of the hardcore audience wernt interested anymore [listen up universal :D ]......
MEL CHERIN.. it did a lot for the polyester set....
JUDY WEINSTEIN....i mean disco was always considered 'gay' till johbn travolta came along..
MARK MOORE S-EXPRESS...people get the wrong idea about saturday night fever,it wasnt actually a pro disco film when you think about it.....
MARK MOORE...id trash it!...
STEVE NEW ORDER at the time it came out it was 'tripe' i had no time for it whatsoever....
JUDY WEINSTEIN.... it was the major labels looking at it thinking we can make money now, they made all the money they can and got out pretty quickly.it was disco but it was also the end of disco.....
thats it and only half way through!
the point PETE TONG made about the punk fashion thing this is a good point and 'one' reason why the english didnt hustle,i dont agree with pete that punk came out of disco but fashion wise disco did meet punk and i dont belive that americans did experience punk as we did in england or have ever done since, these times were the craziest times ever in england and in the thick of that hustling just wasnt going to happen.
next video in line to watch is 'the rise and fall of studio 54, okay ive already took a peek its gonna talk about 'quick' blowjobs from andy warhol in the toilets and a dancer dancing round with a chair leg deposited up his...oh well ill let you work it out![]()

Keep the Faith
Discodisk,
I remember "The Rhythm Divine" airing in the US many years ago. I think it aired on one of the public TV stations here. This American bloke has a question for you: What is Northern Soul, specifically. It is a British term for American R&B music coming from the northern part of the country? Then I guess Motown would be considered "Northern Soul" (or at least until they moved west in 1972).
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards
SALSOUL 1975 its pretty confusing we would be refering to american music popular in the clubs in the north of england, its a term lots of people would like to do away with today as its a national/european/worldwide thing now but its stuck, playlists in clubs in england in the north and south in the 70s were very different but if we were to refer to southern soul we would be refering to the south of your country meaning slower deeper soul from the southern states.
Salsoul75 here is a previous link with a good explanation of Norther Soul/Rare groove, I didn't know either...Originally Written by Salsoul1975

Salsoul 1975: Ermmm, this will tell you nothing about Northern Soul. There are loads of sites dedicated to Northern Soul and they would be your best option IMO.
Otherwise, just Google "Northern Soul + CD" or similar and a whole raft of CD re-releases will come up with track listings, or Google "Wigan Casino" ("Twisted Wheel" + or "The Torch" +)+ "Northern Soul" for a start. From there, other important links should come up.
DD, I have that Rhythm Divine prog on video & I watch it regularly as it features some brilliant promo viseos such as Sylvester 'YMMFMR', 3 Degrees 'Giving Up...', Giorgio 'From Here To Eternity & Eartha Kitt 'I Love Men'. Fantastic stuff! I also have that Studio 54 prog & the gentleman with the chair leg up his ass was Victor Hugo who apparently was designer Halston's assistant. It's a fascinating prog but a little upsetting when that ex-busboy goes thru the list of dead people who he dallied with. :(
I recorded The Rhythm Divine when it originally aired on Channel 4 here. Unfortunately our transmitter went down 40 minutes into the programme for 10 minutes, so my recording has a blue screen saying "Transmitter fault" during that section.
I don't know why I never bought the video proper - I guess I was still a student then. Would love to have a copy - will have to scour eBay.

DARRENS i dont reakon this was mass produced i only ever saw one copy it was in an out of town shop i had no money with me and thought ill go back and get it tomorrow i did and it was gone and never saw another which seemed no great deal at the time as i had the taped copy wish id have tried harder now.maybee worth some e.mails to channel 4,actually i just e.mailed em so ill let you know if they reply [i did an any chance of this becoming available on d.v.d thing] if i dont get a reply ill try and contact stuart cosgrove a director there, hes an old northern souler and responsible in a round about way for many music programmes there, he once had a show of his own and had sam dees on singing 'worn out broken heart' honest!! :POriginally Written by darrens
Same for me - my recording also has the transmitter outage. I believe that was the second time it was on Channel 4. The first time it was on, with no transmission problems, I watched it (but didn't record it). Only decided to record it the second time.Originally Written by darrens
I'm sure I have this on video somewhere - was it shown in 1994 or thereabouts? :-?
What would you do without your muesli...where would you be without a bowl?
Yes, about 10 years ago. If I recall correctly, it was on twice within a fairly short space of time (a few months). I seem to remember that the second time it was on (the one with the transmission failure halfway through) was around Christmas time.Originally Written by Forrrce
Freaky! Given that I was just down the road from you in Cirencester when I recorded it (I think), it's hardly surprising as we were probably off the same transmitter.Originally Written by billywho
I think I saw the video of it for sale in HMV in Swindon, which is fairly big. Like I say, I wish I had bought it!
Regards,
Darren (my name's not darrens, my surname starts with s - should get my ID changed really)![]()
