A friend made me some tapes of old disco material that I did not know--but failed to list the artist's names, in some cases.
Anyone know who recorded?:
1) "The Warrior" (1974)
2) "Gimme Your Love" (1979) sounds like Stephanie Mills--but I don't think it is.
3) "My Way" (1975) ultra-cheesy disco version of Sinatra classic.
4) "Don't Forget About Me (1974)
5) "I Could Never Make a Better Man Than You (1973)
6) "A Hurricane Is Coming Tonight" (1974)
7) "When Love Is New" (1977)
"All I Ask Of You" -dance version of "Phantom Of the Opera" tune.
Thanks in advance.

Track #2 -Sylvia Striplin.......I think.
SENHORES DO GROOVE - BRAZIL
Hi Blax and Marky! Striplin's song was released a couple of years later, so I don't think that would be it.

Ooooops!!!
I'll try again........later.
SENHORES DO GROOVE - BRAZIL
Marky--
Unless there's another version I'm not aware of, "All I Ask of You" is by Vicki Shepard; the Hot Tracks remix is better than the original "Sweet Shop" (or something like that) mix.
Vicki has also covered "Never in a Million Years," "Disco Inferno," "Somewhere" (yep, the West Side Story standard) and even "Let Me Take You Dancing," the hidden (he wishes) Bryan Adams classic.
She's a wild one: a red-haired, big-boobed party gal with a thing for leather. I met her one night at Daddy's on Castro Street.

There is a very good version of "When Love is New" by Jazz singer Arthur Prysock produced by John Davis around '77.
"My Way" was done by The Bobby Azeff Orchestra featuring Bobby Azeff out of Montreal,(7" on aquarius 5046), this song is cheesy but at the time I found it appealing even though it was never a hit for me, the instrumental is nice too.
My Sylvia Striplin 12" of 'Give me your love" was released in 1980 on Melodic Records ('new york' sound) and produced by Roy Ayers, a very sought after 12" on Ebay.

Hi Mr. Marky,
GIMME YOUR LOVE - isn't the ALMA FAYE record released by CASABLANCA in 1979?
WHEN LOVE IS NEW - BILLY PAUL , I guess
That's it for now
Peace

Didn't Osibisa have a song called "The Warrior"? Kind of a world music/disco sound with a definitely African feel. It came out around 1977.
I, too, would suggest Alma Faye as the performer of "Gimme Your Love". Her Casablanca LP (1979) has a 7:26 version of the song. With enough Stephanie Mills feel to it, I think.
Is this "Don't Forget About Me" the Gerry Goffin/Carole King composition from the 60's, the one Barbara Lewis had a hit with? That song could have been great material for a disco version.
"A Hurricane..." was indeed done by Carol Douglas, and "When Love is New" by Billy Paul.
Oh, sorry...
The name of Alma Faye's 1979 album was Doin' It (Casablanca NBLP 7143).
Hey, thanks guys & gals!!!!
So here's a recap:
1) "The Warrior" -it's definitly an African chanting type record, so Osibisa sounds right--but the tape maker wrote 1974 ("A Big Record") was his comment.
2) "Gimme Your Love"- I do believe it's Alma Faye.
3) "My Way" -Bobby Azeff Orchestra
4) "Don't Forget About Me" - ????? (I'll listen again for more clues)
5) "I Could Never Make A Better Man Than You" --????? No Guesses?????
6) "A Hurricane Is Coming Tonight" - Carol Douglas (Of course, as soon as I posted this, I remembered). BUT JEFF--I restrained myself from answering my own post.!!!! Quelle Surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!
7) "When Love Is New" - either Billy Paul or Arthur Prysock...I may have the Prysock, I'll check tonight.
"All I Ask Of You" - Vicki Shepard

Hi MARKY,
about THE WARRIOR: couldn't it be sung by THE SOULFUL DYNAMICS? This was an African group (correct5 me if I'm wrong). I have 1 of their albums and I'll check if the song it's in there.
Peace (paz)

OK, granted Billy Paul did do "When Love Is New" in 1975, but his version is a ballad. Mark's looking for disco, which would lead me to think of Arthur Prysock, same as MixMachine.
Mark, check out the sound clip (if the sites have one) of FUNKY COLLECTOR VOLUME 6. "When Love Is New" by Prysock is the first cut.

"The Warrior" is indeed Osibisa off the "Ojah Awake" Lp (76),(osa-osa-o,osa-osa-o....)this one I had forgotten all about, this album also has "The Coffee song" one of my fave Osibisa tracks.
5 - magic disco machine
Yes of course it was Arthur Prysock who did the disco version -- which was a sizable hit and everything! How could I forget that?
But anyway, I'd surely like to hear a disco version (if anyone ever did one) of that Goffin/King song "Don't Forget About Me". Talking about grand material! "But hey, don't forget about me now baby..."
Ah, Kari...
Goffin/King material--NOW you're talking my language. Oh the Brill Building delights!!!
I'm not sure I remember this song, but I'll give the tape version a listen tonight for more clues. Who originally recorded "Don't Forget About Me Baby"; I probably have it--just don't recognize the title. Dusty Springfield, maybe? The Drifters? Bobby Vee?
BTW, guess what I found at Amoeba Records yesterday? A 12" of ABBA's "The Visitors" b/w "When All Is Said And Done" featuring my new favorite line "Slightly worn but dignified and not too old for sex". Thanks again for that info. I was too lazy to go digging through the ABBA stash. And the beginning of that line was nagging at me for weeks.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
OK, I answered my own question. Dusty Springfield and Barbara Lewis recorded it. I'm sure I have Dusty's version.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Yes, Barbara and Dusty were the ones. Barbara's version came out in 1966 and Dusty's in 1969. And where else did Dusty put it but on her legendary "Dusty in Memphis" album! IMO, both singers did a great job on this one.
I'm listening to "Dusty in Memphis" as I type. Ahh, I'm feelin' a bit nostalgic in the warm (by our standards, not Californian)summer night...... (It's already 3 AM here in Finland!)
