Adobe Audition/Cool Edit Pro. Thumbs up from a newbie.

Due to an unfortunate incident, I've had to change my recording/mastering software in the past fortnight. Over the years, I've tried many vinyl restoration programs and the better ones are all about the same, but not great. I'm learning the ropes on Audition 1.5 (the souped-up Cool Edit Pro. 2) and I'm pretty much taken by its denoising package. It augments my declicking hardware a lot better than my old program (Triple Dat, R.I.P.) and the denoiser's results, if a little over-zealous at times, are excellent so far. So easy to use, too. Some of the editing elements have had me tearing my hair out, but I'm sure I'll conquer them in time - I never read the manuals.

Just restored an LP I've been holding out on for years, because it was always so difficult to get right, but it's so close to how I want it now; and that's without intensive tweaking or any real knowledge of the program. Only had to manually remove one click...so far it's talking my language.

I've seen Cool Edit mentioned here a few times, so maybe its users here can give me a hand if needed. But I think it's pretty impressive. Best software of any kind I've used for ages.

Glad to hear that. I'm using Bias Peak with SoundSoap Pro on Mac OS-X and I'm quite impressed with the results as well. It looks like these audio restoration programs have come a long way from the days of "Ray Gun," which was more like a death ray as it killed the sound. Only wish I had more time to devote to archiving all the vinyl that has piled up

I've used Cool Edit/Audition for years now. I still use the old Cool Edit 2000 for declicking though, as the Pro/Audition versions have a minor but annoying bug that affects scrolling in spectral view.

I just wish I had more time... I hardly have any these days.

I think the scrolling issue is fixed in the latest version. Also in the latest version there is an option (Marque tool?) to apply filters (noice, declick etc) only to a specific frequency range in an easy way in spectral view. Very useful under certain conditions

I have become quite good in handling the program for "vinyl restauration" by the trial and error method. After 800 12" the result improved so much so I decided to start all over again. The problem is that the results keeps on improving so if you don't decide what is "good enough" it could end up being a never ending story :-?

There are also very advanced and great possibilities for remastering but I don't use them. I try to keep the sound as close to the original as possible.

But if you want a dull recording from -75 to sound like a modern House track that will blow the woofers you can achive that too with dynamic processing, EQ,hard limiting, reverbs, your "home made" acoustic filters etc.

    Wonderful software it is.....

Yeap, I've been using it for a while too, at first I was a bit discouraged because of the amount of time needed until Graham send me some good tips, I was de-clicking manually only :o I have to do over a bunch of recordings, and just now I got a faster PC with a bigger drive (and a second external one too) to dump old reels mixes before my machine dies, recording at 96/32 eats 50 megs a minute :o I found this link a while back, I used the settings recommended and restored a cassette with very good results.

Just briefly, does anyone know if Cool/Adobe has a 'scrub' feature? I find this really useful for finding 'hidden' clicks.
