Question About Evelyn King

I've been on an Evelyn craze the last couple of days...bringing me to this question?

Anyone know what the real deal about her "champagne" name was? She kept on using using it, only to remove it and then bring it back again in the mid 80s. Is there a story behind this or was she just suffering from momentary split personalities? :lol:

If I remember, I believe it was a marketing ploy by her mother back in the day - movers and shakers in the record industry didn't believe that such a young woman could have such a powerfull voice and her mother used "Champagne" as an attention getter - Evelyn King is so common.

Yeah...I was wondering if it was just a marketing trick. You're right about her voice though. Hard to believe she was only a teen when recording in the late 70s.

What I heard was her nickname as a child was Bubbles.

Instead of Evelyn Bubbles King it was changed to Evelyn Champagne King.

:lol: Evelyn Bubbles King wouldn't have worked if you want to be accepted as a serious artists. Also, it reminds me too much of a certain monkey owned by a rather disturbed artist

Only guessing of course, but maybe she would occasionally drop the "Champagne" out of embarrassment when people became aware of how she got the name: as I read in an article, a member of her family gave her the "Champagne" name because she used to blow spit bubbles as a child.....sorry, gross I know.....

The story I've heard was that she was cleaning the bathroom at a bar/restaurant/club whilst a record company executive came in. He noticed she was singing, a remarked her talent. When he asked her what her favourite drink was, she replied 'Champagne'.
