    spellings & faves

Or if they don't have all those albums, they should at least be sure to spell Sam Cooke and Dionne Warwicke correctly. :-) Among my faves on your list are the O'Jays, Isaac Hayes, War, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic, Michael Jackson, Chic, Prince... Thanks!

Hmmm...The 80s decade seems badly represented on that list.
Oh...and when did Eric B & Rakim become soul artists?
    There was life after disco!!

    Me-ow!!!

But since you're so hung up on correct spellings, it's worth noting that Dionne Warwick actually used the "e" at the end of her last name only briefly.

(She changed it then changed it back for reasons due to numerology or something like that, if I'm not mistaken; I'm sure Marky and/or Keefe know the whole story.)

It's good to have a list like this one and check out the ones we've missed. However, I wish it would have been more centered on soul itself. I don't think funk qualify as soul (it deserves its own list), and while people like Curtis Mayfield or Isaac Hayes made soul records with a funky vibe, I don't get the point of including Parliament, for example. Those places could been reserved for less known soul singers. Also, Philly Sound is very poorly represented.
I should have taken out Marvin Gaye's "Here my dear" (one of his worst) and put Stevie Wonder's "Music of my mind" in its place. But hey...

You're right K but I think that they see Hip Hop, R&B and NJS as the successors of soul.

Not a bad list however, absolutely not. If people have all these in their collection they have a good basis. Like any other list, it is not complete of course. But which list will ever be the definite one??

Yes indeed! If you have that list in your record collection then you have a very good foundation!! Whilst I lament the fact that the 80's wasnt represented K-Bee, I do like the fact that the 70's is duly acknowledged!

Tower records made up a list about 5 years ago much like this. They included some rap, New Jack, and neo-soul. They were skimpy on Salsoul and Prelude and included many CD versions (like Millenium Collection).
Great representations with DJ Rodgers, Mitty Collier, and Doris Duke. Many other albums or hits selections on CD from today could be argumentatively worked in. I'm not sure if I agree with including live albums over studio. Another problem for me would be which Spinners album would a leave off or would a go for an expansive anthology collection. That last argument is the primary reason why I never compiled one.
