Somewhere in the music world, there is a Hall Of Fame dedicated to those disco records that got overplayed ad nauseum well into the 1990's and beyond and have now become yawners instead of infinte booty workouts. I know some of those records that have entered those hallowed halls:
1. YOU'RE THE FIRST, THE LAST, MY EVERYTHING-Barry White
2. LAST DANCE-Donna Summer
3. I WILL SURVIVE-Gloria Gaynor
4. CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOUR LOVE, BABE-Barry White
5. TURN THE BEAT AROUND-Gloria Estefan*
6. HEAVEN KNOWS-Donna Summer
7. EVERLASTING LOVE-Gloria Estefan*
*-Although "Turn The Beat Around" and "Everlasting Love" were originally recorded by Vicki Sue Robinson and Carl Carlton, respectively, Gloria Estefan remade both songs for an album of cover versions of previous hits and they eclipsed the original versions in current-day radio programming.
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards
There are more overplayed Disco Tunes (at least here in Portugal...):
Village People-Y.M.C.A.
Patrick Hernandez-Born To Be Alive
Boney M-Daddy Cool
Anita Ward-Ring My Bell
Boystown Gang-Can´t Take My Eyes Off You
Disco Inferno - The Trammps (along with almost anything else from the SNF soundtrack)
Doctor's Orders - Carol Douglas
Knock On Wood - Amii Stewart
Rasputin - Boney M
Salsoul already named the No. 1 offender, "I Will Survive." What a shame that this once-powerful anthem has been so diluted with time. (But I still enjoy hearing the instrumental parts.)
My other top pick is "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc. I never need to hear this song again--ever.
Also, almost everything by the Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band and Barry White--disco music for hetero wedding receptions, if you ask me.
Interesting that Graham and Studio74 both named songs by Boney M. I can't say I hear anything by Boney M that often--except "Mary's Boy Child" over and over and over this time of year.
In that case, don't rent the "Shrek 2" DVD. :lol:Originally Written by Jeff H
I don't think I've ever once heard Boney M on the radio except for on Joe Causi's show. Ever.
My votes for most overplayed:
I will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
Celebration - Kool & the Gang (and a terrible song, too.)
That's the way (uh-huh) - KC
Stayin' Alive - The Bee Gees
Hot Stuff - Donna Summer
Last Dance - Donna Summer
Heaven Knows - Donna Summer
Lady Marmalade - LaBelle (I just can't stand this song because it pops up so often on TV and the Radio)
Disco Inferno - The Trammps
Everlasting Love - Gloria Estefan
Instant Replay - Dan Hartman
"Heaven Knows", "Doctor's Orders" and Boney M songs are overplayed???? Where???? I "NEVER" hear those songs anymore...Wow...Must be a regional thing or something...The other songs listed I do agree are played time and time again...But to be quite honest, I appreciate Gloria Estefan bringing back those old disco songs (although they are super watered down versions)...I think it's a chance for today's kids to get an ever slight flavor of the disco 70s. I get a charge when young kids think that Gloria's songs are "new!" Take Care, Guys! 8) Mario
There's a solution -- instead of the overplayed originals, get people to listen to these versions instead:
"Disco Inferno" by Tina Turner (1993)
"I Will Survive" by Banda Rod Hanna (2002)
"Knock on Wood" by Edwin Starr (1998) (I haven't heard this version yet)
"That's the Way (I Like It)" by Edwin Starr (1998) (ditto)
"Rasputin" by Gilla (1979)
"Last Dance" by Selena (1995)
I liked Estefan bringing back "Turn the Beat Around", though I still prefer the original.
NickNack, have you seen this year's Areva TV commercial using "Funkytown"? We can't escape it, even without seeing "Shrek 2"!
Yea I found out Boney M was quite the mainstream thing in almost every country but ours belive it or not! Ive said this on other posts in the past but if only the US mainstream pop disco was anything like what was overseas...id be a huge fan of it :lol:Originally Written by ComputerDisco
Fly By Night, Sleep In The Daytime
Gladys Knight did a wonderful live version of "I will Survive" that I haven't got tired of..
Barry white can't be overplayed.. It's like getting tired of the sound of the wind or birds singing in the springtime![]()
Jeff H,here in Portugal Boney M is overplayed, but for instance i almost never hear anything by Donna Summer or The Trampps. When i go to Lux (for me Lisbon´s best nightclub) i sometimes will hear I Feel Love, but that´s it...
But I Will Survive,The Bee Gees,Village People,Patrick Hernandez are very overplayed here in Portugal...
DJ Jimmy M, while I was on holiday in San Francisco I was reading a copy of my PetShop Boys fanzine & a bloke came over & said he loved that 'alternative' music which I found amazing as the PSBs are so mainstream pop in Europe! The US music scene is so different in some ways to ours.
I think its interesting that U.S. songs sung in English receive so much air play in countries where English is not the main first language. In her day Donna Summer was the most overplayed disco artist along with the BeeGees and probably Chic.
Dim All the Lights
Bad Girls
Hot Stuff
Were all played incessantly.
I recall being in the Vegas version of Studio 54 a few years ago. I thought - now here is a place where I will get to hear some classic disco tunes! Instead, the playlist sounded like it could have come from this thread - I heard "Funkytown", and was out of there.
The last time I was in Vegas I considered going to this club to see just how "authentic" the music was--until I read that there was an upscale dress code; "dress to impress" or something to that effect.Originally Written by jam master jay
As a Levi's and T-shirt kind of guy, I rarely "dress to impress" anyone.
