    Bono/U2

Has anyone seen his tv commercial for iPod or iTunes or whatever the hell it is? If you have, do you agree with me that they should be paying royalties to Motown for lifting "You Keep Me Hangin' On"? Every time it comes on that's what I start singing --- lick-for-lick through the first four verses. :o What gives?

Theft of Licensed material rears its ugly head!!!

    Hi, NickNack:

I'll just go find out for you if, indeed, royalties were or were not paid. The first place to go is Apple, the manufacturer of the IPod, to find out who the ad agency is that created the spot; then you just ask 'em. The worst they could do is lie. You could also go to www.ascap.com or www.bmi.com and do a search by title and then narrow it down by performer. I'd be glad to have Cais, in my office, do that for you. Sometimes, sampling permissions don't come up on those sites 'cause its an off-license agreement (don't you pity ASCAP and BMI, they don't get a piece of the action in that case!!!)

Off the topic for a moment, although he has remarkably versatile voice, I still have an enormous problem with Bono for his pedantic performance on Frank Sinatra's "Duets." He scatted, in falsetto, all over the signature trombone solo in "I've Got You Under My Skin." Bad, bad taste, demonstrative of a complete lack of understanding of the history of the song and its meaning when Sinatra does it.

    Paul,
I just played this song the other day and thought almost the same thing. The only other person I think could do this may be Morrissey. I'm a U2 fan, but have to wonder about Bono and his holier than thou attitude. As he likes to say in a live song, "Am I bugging ya..." Hell yes now shut the **** up!

Bono - Holier than thou, and Holier than Lorne Michaels

    How true, Bernie, How true.

I saw U2 on Saturday Night Live (mighta been a re-run) last Saturday, for just a bit after I came home from work. They are, indeed, a very listenable group (this coming from a strictly non-rocker).

At the end, the famous SNL closing tune began with the sax riff, the camera panning across the troupe, with Bono and the guest host sitting together on the stage apron. Bono jumps up and says "another, another..." and U2, rather than the SNL band, plays; I guess they had time on their hands, 'cause it was a good :02:30 before they started the credit roll.

I wonder if it was Lorne's idea or Bono's?

No need, Paul, and I guess my wording might have pumped you up. When I said "lifted" I didn't mean "sampled". It's just whatever song they're singing for this commercial sounds so much like The Supremes, "YKMHO". The way the first four lines are structured you could substitute one for the other. :o I'm not a rock fan but I do know Bono and U2 so this really surprised me. BTW --- Is this track off their new "...Atom Bomb" CD?

Bono is pompous & religious, 2 of the worst human characteristics; he makes Phil Collins look pleasant.

    Bono and Quincy Jones

I will give Bono credit for his outrageous and self-depricating performance on the 1995 Quincy Jones "Q's Jook Joint" - great work - but then, anyone would sound good, amidst solos by Stevie Wonder and the late Ray Charles, for the most part merely uttering the words, "Can I get in here?"

I've sampled those words over and over and over again -- the timbre and delivery of that single line is the essence of Bono at his very best. A credit not to Bono but to Mr. Jones for coaxing it out of him, in my humble opinion.

    Marky,

The commercial starts with him counting in: "Unos, dos, tres, quatro" and then they start singing. It's not that song has the actual 'music' of The Supremes' song but the way it's structured and his phrasing. You could sing both songs together and not miss a beat.

OK, I think I see what you mean...

Bono sings..."Hello, hello... it's me again"

(afterthought: am I thinking of Todd Rundgren's 'Hello, It's Me" with those lyrics? They sounded right yesterday--but now I'm thinking I'm making **** up!!!)

Miss Ross sings..."Set me free, why doncha babe"

It is similar...but, until you mentioned it, the similarity didn't hit me.

    I like this "Vertigo" song!!!
