    Disco's Leading Men....

Just picked up this cheesy disco cd at fye titled Disco's Leading Men from the disco nights series.

    The tracklist is as follows:
    1. Barry White - Never, Never Gonna Give You Up
    2. Village People - San Francisco
    3. Frankie Valli - Swearin' to god
    4. Peter Brown - Crank It Up
    5. Van McCoy - The Hustle
    6. Kool & The Gang - Hollywood Swingin'
    7. Andy Gibb - I Just Want To Be Your Everything
    8. Commodores - Brick House
    9. George McCrae - Rock You Baby
    10. Don Ray - Got To Have Loving
    11. Rick James - Dance Wit' Me
    12. James Brown - Sex Machine

How could we make this cd better and less cheesier?

OK, well first, get rid of all the tracks. Not because they're bad, but they've just been overplayed. There's more to disco than just the same 30 tracks over and over again...

    So, how about some...

    Theo Vaness
    Gino Soccio
    Dennis Parker
Eddie Drennon ("Would You Dance To My Music?")
    Joey Travolta
    Peter Jacques Band/Macho/Revanche
    Kickin' ("Dancin' On Wheels")
    Midnight Rhythm
John Davis & The Monster Orchestra
    Giogio Moroder

    Just my 2 cents' worth...

Just get rid of Cerrone and Costandinos, two 'C' words forced into my vocabulary, but never spoken in polite company. The world would be a much better place without 'em. 8)

I don't think either Cerrone or Costandinos SANG on their work, did they? How can they be considered Disco's Leading Men? They were composer/producers--not SINGERS. :o

They hired "girly girls" to do that.

Marky: I second that emoticon. Ya see, I didn't want to be the one to bring that little technical detail to the fore.

Costandinos sung on just about every Love And Kisses track, on the Trocadero Bleu Citron LP, and on all male vocal parts on his LPs listed under his own name if were talkin lead vocals.

Cerrone has had select tracks he's sung on..mainly twards the end of the disco era before he went pop/rock.

Hey Nicky. I like what you did especially, Village People - San Francisco/HOLLYWOOD. Love that suite.
I'll admit a guilty pleasure. I do like Swearin' to god even if it may be cheesy  8)

Marky, my dear friend, you're wrong concerning Alec and also Cerrone did the vocals on many of his songs, it wasn't only girlie choirs.

Mr. Quinny:  don't like ze French, n'est-ce pas???

C'mon guys, they ruled the dancefloors and influenced many, many, many other acts.

Repent! Put them in your hearts! Praise the two Disco-gods

Give me love! Love is here! Love is the answer!

Singing in the background with 5 to 12 other "studio singers for hire" isn't a "Leading Man" to me!!!!

Did Alec sing the low "Thank God" part on "TGIF"? I'd give him props if he did.

I've listened to their music, although NOT as obsessive/ cumpulsively as some of you. :P It's always girly-girls cooing.

Name the tracks Alec C. & JM C sing the lead vocals on, please. :o

Were they the hits? I'm just askin'.

    Wow! Stop the press!

A little misunderstanding here. Leading men=Singers??

I thought the topic was about influence. Since Don Ray was included in the original opening of the topic (he didn't sing much either!)

If you mean the best singers: no, Cerrone and Alec were not :D

(But they had great girlies as vocalists:oops: !)

Marky ,I don't have the LP with me, but I think he sings the solo parts in "I found love" at least the vocalists sounds just like his Americana's Lp vocals, which reads, " All Vocals by Alec R. Constandinos".

That's how I took it, not as 'lead vocalists'. And after saying that I realized I have one glaring omission: ISAAC HAYES! Like I said --- pick your favorite. :)

On the Alec and Cerrone singing controversy --- this is what I got off the lp jackets:

LOVE AND KISSES (self-titled): Vocals by Sue, Stephanie, Joanne, Vicki, Sunny and Alec.
HOW MUCH, HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU - LOVE AND KISSES: Vocals by Sue, Stephanie, Joanne, Sunny and Alec.
YOU MUST BE LOVE - LOVE AND KISSES: Vocals by Helen Chapelle, Katie Kissoon, Liza Strike, Arthur Simms, Vickie Brown, Stephanie De Sykes and Alec R. Costandions

ROMEO & JULIET: Sue, Sunny, Stephanie, Kay Joan, Vicki, Alec & Stephen

CERRONE V: Cerrone lead vocalist on "Rock Me" and "Angelina".
CERRONE VI: Cerrone: Lead Vocals, Drums, Percussion

I honestly never thought of these guys as "singers" but they would get my vote in a "Disco's Leading Men" category, along with Boris Midney. Quinny --- have you up-chucked yet? :)

Nicky: I up chucked over two years ago when I first joined this site. I didn't know who Alec R. Costandidos was until then, as the only record that I had with his name on, that I liked, was Tony Rallo's Holdin' On. Now I wish I'd never heard of him.

Sorry to disappoint my Belgian chum VideoS, but to me and many other Brit DJs, Alec R was a non event and Cerrone a two hit wonder. Nothing to do with les Francais, just that instantly forgettable music these two produced. :P :P :P

Well Quinny, that is nothing but your oppinion. I happen to know many apon many brits that were in the discos back in the time and both Alec and Cerrone were very popular played stuff in the discos over there and also..more than forgot LOLLLLLL. We've had this discussion before, your simply a "soul man" (which dont get me wrong..I am as well) and..just cause you dont like it and didnt play it, dont mean that it wasnt very big and forgot. Hell I hate with a passion "Ring My Bell" and i'll say, it was a very popular track..and even though I may not have been spinning disco in the 70s..I still played stuff that I had to play rather than what I liked or disliked...and will admit, that even though I hate some stuff, I wont make untrue statements and say it wasnt popular or known LOL. You really dont know alot about Alec...there was someone else with your opinion over here at the forum (I wont mention a name lol) but...I made him listen to the works Alec did on both Bad News Travels Fast LPs, Tony Rallo LP, etc and well..his opinion on Alec is now changed. But to say that this stuff was unknown and not popular in UK is an absolute BS statement.

Jimmy: The truth sometimes hurts.

Costandinos was certainly not held in the same esteem as you American guys held him. Certain Brit DJs may have played his music, but I'd bet that overall, my presumption is nearer the truth.

None of my DJ contemporaries ever raved over Costandinos or Cerrone, either immediately, or in hindsight, BITD. None of their records were absolute 'must haves' and with the exception of Supernature and possibly Love in C Minor, none were dance floor hits for any more than a few plays/few weeks. i.e. They were no big deal and I was never asked to play any Costandinos records. Maybe we were philistines, but with 20/20 hindsight I'd still say that we exhibited good taste.

I would say that "Romeo & Juliet" and "I Found Love Now That I Found You" are 2 must haves of Costandinos if your spinning disco. As for Cerrone for must haves id say as you did "Supernature". But, just because where you worked they didnt ask for him dont mean that it was unknown and unpopular, just that for your specific crowd it wasnt in demand. And actualy, over in the US..all of Costandinos' stuff (minus C Minor and TGIF) were strict club play only stuff that the mainstream didnt know about (unless of corse you listened to disco radio stations). And over in the UK Costandinos made major mainstream stats with a few hits as to say in America...comparable to what we think of Bee Gees, some Gloria Gaynor stuff etc.

I don't know much about the status of Alec and Cerrone in the UK but here they were and still are massive. The rmx-album by Bob Sinclar and Cerrone was a big seller two years ago and even up today you can find almost every album of Cerrone in the big recordstores (and they sell, I can tell you that). Many, and I mean many people are asking about the Costandinos-stuff which is not released and would eventually sell if it was put back on the market.

I got a mail from Cerrone himself a while ago (yes you can contact this god!) and he too was saying how he enjoyed being in Belgium and that he knows he's still adored here.

I discovered both artists way back, when we got tapes from a French discotheque in the mid 70's and when Cerrone or Costandinos were playing on our bumpercartrack (which answers Jimmy's question in the topic about personal pics. Our current Videoskooter was known as the Disco-skooter back then)everybody came to the cashbox and asked what that incredible stuff was. So, they were huge. I think soulmusic wasn't that big over here. So, I guess, different countries=different tastes.

It's a special style of disco, more symphonic and I can fully understand that people don't like it.

    They're wrong of course, hahahahahaha!

It can be single or group but your choices puzzle me. If you had said, Niles Rodgers & Bernard Edwards, I'd agree with you. But Chic? :-? It's a mixed group. As for Ms. Linda Clifford --- this is no man, for sure.
