do you consider the miami sound machine to be disco?

do you consider the miami sound machine "conga" song to be disco?

it sounded very disco to me.

    1985 1986 disco?

if i remember correctly my father's 12" even had a "disco single" sticker on it.

but what do i know i was only 6 years old at the time.

obviously we all know disco is still around and has not gone anywhere but i am talking about in terms of the classic disco sound.

Check out "Dr beat" it came out around ’84 and still featured many classic 'disco' style elements with Latin flavor added, lots of percussion reminiscing of old productions of the 70's, for instance the congas arrangement is very similar to older ‘John Davis’ productions and the break reminds me of ‘Soul Cha-Cha’ by Van McCoy with a tinge of ‘Sing Sing’ by Charley Calello in there too.. this song is the first club crossover hit for them not ‘Conga’.

    ok i will do that.

but in terms of having the disco sound all over the radio as late as early 1987 would you consider "conga" to be a disco song?

Spellbound, for me "Conga" was latin 'Disco', I first got 12" Epic promo copies from the UK (I don't know why) before this song was available here in the US, I believe they also had the 'disco' sticker, I will look and see....

I'm sorry, MSM is definitely not disco to me. I can go with "Dr. beat" as a good dancetune but the rest of the MSM-catalogue does not appeal to me in any way.

I guess I'm just not into the 80's-sound

MSM is sorta too late for "Disco"....it was "Dance" music by the mid-80s.

However, I liked some of their tunes. "Conga" is Classic, IMHO.

how about as far as capturing the excitement of the 1970's disco in 1986 and 1987?

i guess what i am trying to say is if you could somehow find a way to travel back to 1978 you could take this 12" with you and it would fit in to a 1978 DJ set where as most of the other records in 1986 and 1987 would not fit in at all.

i always considered "black box" to be 1989 1990 disco until i realized a lot of their music was samples of original disco...
for example "peter jacques" was sampled on "i dont know anybody else"

so as far as sort of being disco in 1986 and early 1987 without using any samples i think this would be a good example

but then again what do i know i was only 6 years old

everything back then was happening so fast

Miami Sound Machine maybe did disco in 1979

    About Miami Sound Machine:
"Dr. Beat" and "Conga" are not disco. But I read that their 1979 version of "For Once in My Life", from their album "Imported", is latin-disco, however I haven't validated that claim yet. Look for Gloria Estefan's 1994 remake of "Turn the Beat Around" for some additional disco flavor, from one of her solo albums.

About disco with no samples in the mid-to-late 1980s:
For authentic disco in this time - very hard to find - you can look for "La Vie Continue" by Fragile on the Rocks (December 1989), which is a very close remake of the Whispers' "And the Beat Goes On" from ten years earlier, but with the words sung in French. Also look for "Who Will Be the One" by Blue Feather (1985), and some Indian disco like "Zooby Zooby" by Alisha Chinai (1987) and evidently the "Disco Mazaa" album from Nandu Bhende (1987) and the "Disco Zamana" album also from Nandu Bhende (1985).

I always debated whether MSM was a quasi freestyle aka latin hiphop group cause there songs fit in pretty well with the songs of those years.
