    Terry Melcher dies

Legendary producer Terry Melcher has died, he was 62.

He's best known for hits like the Beach Boys' "Kokomo" and The Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine man".

He was the son of Doris Day with whom he runned a hotel in Carmel, California. He was also the producer of the "Doris Day show".

In 1969 he made headlines because he lived in the house where Sharon Tate was murdered. Some people thougt at that time that he was the real target of the Manson-family.

I heard this on the news this morning. And strangely, they never mentioned he was Doris Day's son. :o

Being very attractive and well connected, he also dated Candice Bergen and was definitely the conduit between the Manson clan & the Hollywood elite. He was acquainted with the guy (was his name Tex?) who did the Tate killings. Something about trying to get a recording contract, but who knows? The true nature of the relationship was probably more about scoring drugs.....but I'm just speculatin'.

If I remember well, Melcher rejected a demo tape of Manson songs. The connection between them was one of the Beach Boys -I think it was Dennis Wilson- who was friends with Manson from hippie L.A. drug parties. Melcher moved out of the house -and Polanski moved in- some weeks before the killings. Apparently the Manson clan didn't know this fact and so they went for the wrong people.
But I believe some people do not give credit to this theory. The whole thing went public again when the L.A. band Guns 'N Roses recorded a song by Manson in the "Spaghetti Incident?" covers album in 1993 (it's featured as a hidden track). There was some scandal, settled down when it was promised that any publishing earnings from the GN'R cover would go to the families of those who died in the killings.
