ARTIST SPOTLIGHT #14 - AVERAGE WHITE BAND

Average White Band nicknamed AWB busted out early in '75 with the super heavy duty pop-funk-jazzy hit PICK UP THE PIECES and what an amazing LP that backed up that song. It was awesome to see that in Scotland, they also appreciated the funk.... In their music... you could hear some of the JB's influence. I loved it! Their masterpiece LP came out in 1976... titled SOUL SEARCHING. What were some of your favorites.

    PICK UP THE PIECES
    GOIN' HOME
    SOUL SEARCHING
    SUNNY DAYS

    etc. etc. etc.

Never bought many of their records, but as well as 'Pick Up The Pieces', I'll add 'Person To Person' and their version of 'Work To Do' was OK. 'Let's Go 'Round Again' is pure pop, but still a great record.

Certainly Pick Up The Pieces; followed by the ballad A Love Of Your Own and Let's Go Round Again.

I'm with Marky here. The rest of their efforts didn't mean much to me and they never reached the craftmanship of groups like Tower Of Power.

One of their songs which played a lot here at the time was ATLANTIC AVENUE probably because of its RIO connections. It played regularly many times everyday on the radio (it may have been in 1979). I like it and also their cover of WALK ON BY.

They were Scottish?... :o News to me...sorry guys :-?

Only popular cuts in my area.

    "Pick up the pieces"
    "Work to do"

Playing now the 'Shine' vinyl (got it a few months back)and "let's go 'round again" doesn't ring any old bells :( but it's nice. I wonder if I ever got a 12"...Hmmmmm

Totally agree! Those are my three favourites, plus the whole 'Shine' album, which is the most disco, the best one for my taste, and the most difficult to find on CD (Only issued in Japan) If you like AWB and like disco, you have to get that album!

AWB, great R&B and disco band. By the way, Tower of Power rules, too.

I absolutely love these guys. That Soul Searching album is a must have.
Here's a couple more songs to add:
    Person To Person
    Queen Of My Soul
    Got The Love
    Cut The Cake
    Find them and destroy them!

Hey Guys...I used to "LOVE" AWB!! Two of my favorite songs were: "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" & "School Boy Crush." I couldn't understand why either song never really caught on and just kinda' hung around the bottom of the Top 40 charts. They had a funky-jazzy feel to them unlike the sound heard in Pick Up The Pieces/Cut The Cake. (Maybe I just answered my own question... ) Take Care 8) Mario

I really liked 'Whatcha Gonna Do For Me' but then Chaka Khan did an even better version!

"Let's Go Round Again" is a MAGICAL song! Just love it! Is the 12" version on cd? The U.K. 12" doesn't show the time of the song...lp version is almost 5 minutes...is the 12" version the LP version?? thanks.

    favorite AWB tracks?

"Person to Person", "A Love of Your Own" (that one is super sexy), "School Boy Crush" and a Dan Hartman composition whose title escapes me. And their guitarist Hamish Stuart wrote one of Chaka Khan's best songs, "What Cha Gonna Do For Me?" I always liked AWB but always disliked the name, though you sure can't forget it..
