    Disco music on Satellite Radio

Is anyone familiar with the disco music on satellite radio? I went to the Boston Auto Show and noticed a few cars on display that come with satellite radio for free for the first year of purchase. The menu indicated that there were stations exclusively for disco. I'm assuming this wouldn't be all classic, with mostly newer hits...

    Disco on Satellite Radio

"Music Choice," the folks who provide content to most Dish providers and to Cable, have futzed around with a delightful classic disco channel for years. It's just been removed from their lineup again (see post herein re: CABLE/DMX REMOVES DISCO CHANNEL).

I recall when DMX was very new, and as ambitious as the providers of Satellite Radio for cars are now. They offered a lot more, and then, over the years, pared it down. As a commercial subscriber for two venues, I sure wish they'd have pared down their price ($75 monthly in addition to my commercial cable license) whilst they pared down their selections.

I would shop carefully and look for some assurance in their sales materials (and by combing all the fine print) that the stations that interest you will continue to exist, if that's possible.

We tried it in a rented Cadillac and it was just marvelous (but old fuddy-duddy me; I can engineer an album but I couldn't figure out exactly how to deal with the radio in the Caddy).

I plan on purchasing one of these devices soon, just to have it; to try it out. I'm going to investigate on the internet but I'd be really grateful to hear what anyone else here comes up with.

Sorry if this post sounds like a commercial for satellite radio, but I just had mine activated in my car.
There are basically two companies XM and Sirius. I went with Sirius for a couple of reasons. Their six dance channels have something for everyone. I especially like their channel 62 “Remix” which has 24/7 mixing- no commercials. Just non stop mixed tunes of various genres produced by a variety of DJ’s from all over. (XM only has occasional mixes) Sirius’ disco channel is #68 “The Strobe” featuring non stop classics including some of the more obscure titles you don’t hear often. There are four other dance channels each featuring a particular genre- from “old skool” to trance and popular dance tunes of the day. Sirius also has an all gay channel that is incredible. (XM doesn’t offer this service) As a subscriber you can also listen on your computer to the same channels for free. Sirius rates are $12.95 per month, while XM is $9.99 a month. Both offer bigger discounts if you’re purchasing for a year or more at a time. You can get a free 3 day pass at Sirius to try out the 120 channels. I can honestly say I don’t miss regular radio and their commercials! :)

I forgot to mention-duh- that it was because of Sirius sat. radio that I found this wonderful place. They have a direct link to Bernie's place on their Disco page. I'd also say to the ones who are pissed at Music Choice for dropping their Disco channel to cancel their asses and buy a Sirius unit for the house and get all the Disco your hot little buns can take!! :) :) :)

I'm not so sure that any of these cable/satellite type channels are worth the effort. I take it that they are all automated in some way. If so, all they do is run repeat after repeat after repeat of the same programmes. Now I'm not saying that you might not get to hear a whole load of stuff in the meantime, but eventually you'll notice the loop.

We have digital radio in the UK (DAB) and if DMX is similar then I have to concur that the audio quality is soooo much better than FM. Of course, this is even more true when a DJ does a show featuring scratched 7" and 12" records from his own, abused, overplayed collection. Those clicks and scratches sound marvellously YEUCH in DAB audio.

I was concerned about that very thing you mentioned. However, I’ve not noticed this to be true with the Sirius system. In fact on the mix shows I’ve heard mistakes (mismatched beats, etc) that I’m convinced some of what I’m hearing is either live or recorded for later play. But on the dance channel I listen to from Direct TV (Music Choice) you can hear their loop of songs if you let it play all day long. While I’m at work I listen to the Sirius station all day on my computer and have not noticed any type of loop of songs.

    Sirius Customer Right Here

Checked out their website and am ready to sign up. What I find peculiar is that the device that distributes the signal throughout three rooms in the house/office is $2,000; why not just buy three of the $299 single-source units?

Problem is, with my collection of records, CDs, tapes, etc. I need another source of music like I need a hole in the head. There is a strong possibility that, when wifey finds out I've invested in this high-tech gadget, I'll be landing on my ass, along with the Sirius receiver and my clothing (and perhaps the rest of the music collection) on my front lawn... in which case I may start another thread herein, entitled, "Homeless waif with lotsa music and the latest gadgets seeks place to hang his hat."

:o JudyD; Hope your tongue was very truly in your cheek when you wrote this. However, in my experience, wives are better served by pretending they don't mind and then just dragging it up again ad nauseum, whenever a further minor misdemeanour is perpetrated.

    I Kid You Not...

    Quinny:

It's become so bad that when a record comes out I really, really want, I give a friend of mine the cash and he orders it through Amazon, then mails it to me at the office -- so she thinks it's comp product from one of the labels. She's aware she can do nothing about comp product -- it's part of my job.

My wife prefers to re-hash incidents that have to do with alcohol-related loss of face, the most significant of these involving a return to a favorite, very expensive New York City restaurant. Expecting to be greeted with open arms, I popped my head in and asked the Maitre d' to take care of my wife while I parked the car.

While I parked the car, they told my wife how I'd become so drunk one evening the week before I insisted on playing the piano in the bar and singing ribald versions of Frank Sinatra standards... Upon my return to the restaurant she smacked me with open hand, straight across my face, and told the Captain to "take me and this drunk to a table where I can't be seen eating with him."

I was in a rented Accura that had satellite radio. Couldn't figure the thing out, but the disco station I found from the menu seemed to have a lot of disco sounding songs I was unfamiliar with?

Yes, it sounded like all original material. It was as if disco was being produced somewhere and the producers forgot to tell us. It doesn't seem likely its being made strictly for satellite listeners. Also, it didn't sound loaded with synthesizer stuff, a lot of brass & percussion. Maybe I just hit it on a good night?

DIRECTV has Disco on ch. 802 every other day but as stated earlier it is a loop. Some good stuff but then aain there are the old tired classics which we all love & despise. Sirius is decent with STROBE. XM has CHROME as their All Disco Offerin.

The main reason, i would not invest in digital radio yet... DIRECTV 's disco channel (which they divide the time with 'old school rap') is so cheesy and corny. You'll never hear true disco here, just the pop fluff.

    DirecTV vs. Satellite

    Dear DiscoFrank:

The programming provider for DirecTV, as well as Cable DMX service, is MusicChoice. Sirius and XM digital radio have their own programming directors and do their own programming, they are not clients of MusicChoice.

Perhaps that will influence your decision.

Define "TRUE" Disco please. It does have some corny stuff but hey, its better than nothing, at least for me.

I get lots of Sirius channels free on Dish Network. I listen to 'The Strobe' occasionally but it's sad that they use so many single edits when it's totally unnecessary in a commercial-free format.

Is the music mixed at all? Do they play any disco oldies? It seems we just don't see any of the talent we used to see back in the late 70's. We used to take if for granted as part of the norm.

    XM Disco Channel is GREAT!!!

I bought XM for my car because they have at least one channel, CHROME (Setting: 83) which they label as DISCO.. Not dance, nor Club, Just plain old Disco! Sirius does not do that...

I love their Jingle: CHROME XM!!! Where Disco doesn't suck!!

    :D

The music does not loop. They play most of the classics but I find myself writing down at least one song DAILY that I either did not know or had never given it a fair chance when it came out (so a re-discovery, really).

I also extended my XM subscription with an online account so I can listen to Xm on my laptop 24/7, even when traveling.. AbCool!

So, one small thing that disappoints me about XM's Chrome is when they play songs I don't consider Disco.. I mean they will redeem themselves and play SuperNature or Romeo & Juliet, etc.., mostly 70's stuff "most of the time like 90% of the time" but then they may play (like 2-5% of the time) some early 80's non-Disco stuff like Pointers Sisters Neutron Dance (with that jarring pseudo-New Wave beat). There's another one from the early 80's that they play that I never cared for and would never call Disco.. It's only an annoyance and I am willing to live with it in return to having such a dedicated channel.

The ONLY MAJOR downside of XM is that this last holiday season, these poor M&^%&$&, changed the format of Chrome from Thanksgiving Day to the last week of December to their Eclectic Christmas music format (punk version of Jingle Bells, anyone?). That was truly offensive to me..

The only way to combat for this is for EVERYONE here to get at least an online XM account (Like $5 a month, not sure) so that they won't dare do this next year.. And the more of us get it, and support Chrome, the less chance they would ever take it down or away...

    http://www.xmradio.com/programming/c...page.jsp?ch=83

XM has other good stuff, a 70's station, 40's music, CNN live, BBC America, and 5 other more contemporary Dance channels.. But the pure Disco channel is why I got it... :D Enjoy!

I've never heard them really 'mix' anything... it's done pretty much just like a typical radio station with too much talk in between. They do play mostly 70s classics with the occasional newer 'dance' track thrown in.

    Here's their site: http://www.sirius.com/TheStrobe

LOL.. I just tuned in and they're playing Billie Jean, and not even the 12" version. :-?

This really does suck! What they do here, is give credence to the fact that disco DID suck in THEIR opinion. A real disco afficianado with a brain would not have done that.
