Blancmange?????
My version of "The Day Before You Came" was by those Swedes known as ABBA and sung by the blonde , Agnetha Faltskog.
"There's not a single episode of "Dallas, that I haven't seen"
"The lastest book by Marilyn French, or something in that style"
We need to do a best lines from ABBA thread. What's the one about "something, something, dignified and NOT TOO OLD FOR SEX"???? I'm sure Frida sings this one.
Hmmm?
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Yup, Blancmange-at least for me. Just finshed playing the 12" from 1984 to re-confirm. Writing credits say "Anderson..." so you are right about Abba. The Dallas episodes line is there as well. The lyrics go:
"I must have gone to lunch at half past twelve or so
The usual place, the usual bunch
and still on top this I'm pretty sure it rained,
the day before you came..."
It's actually a good song. Now I'll have to seek out the original by Abba.

OK, I checked allmusic.com--they BOTH did it but ABBA was the original; Blancmange the cover version.
What's strange is that I don't remember the Blancmange version and I have so much of their stuff. Am I having a senior moment? I must go home and check my Blancmange stash.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
So nrgbeat, WHO did you have in mind as the artist????
I'm surprised Bernie didn't know the ABBA version--AND, I'm shocked that I didn't know the Blancmange version.
Hmmmm?????
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
I only know the Abba version.
Jeff wanted a song quiz so I thought I'd list lyrics that I thought he would know.![]()
Well, thanks, NRG.
But believe it or not, I'm not a huge ABBA fan. Sure, I like their music--and have defended it here--and, OK, I have seen Mamma Mia! twice, but I have only their greatest hits double CD and a couple of remixes (and a few remakes like Abbacadabra too).
If anyone would ask me who sang "The Day Before You Came," I'd know the answer, but I don't know this song well enough to ID it from the lyric you gave.
How about "Friday night and the lights are low..." instead?
\"...a once in a lifetime feeling that returns every week...\"
Marky-
"Slightly worn but dignified, and not too old for sex"...it's "When All Is Said And Done" from ABBA's last studio album, The Visitors (1981).
As for "The Day Before You Came", my answer would definitely be ABBA. I've never even heard any other version -- or don't remember them.
"The Day Before" was released as a single in 1982, and it was also on a two-record compilation ABBA: The Singles - The First Ten Years (which would of course be their last as well, as a group -- ABBA officially disbanded in 1982). The other new song on that compilation was "Under Attack".
Thanks Kari for all that info.
"Sightly worn but dignified and not too old for sex" Gawd--I think I gotta change my signature line. That is too perfect.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Isn't it? And I mean for me too... Just last month I turned 40!!! Oh well well well...
Bernie,
I went through my collection and I DO have the Blancmange version of "The Day Before You Came" but only on the LP "Mange Tout" (7:58) I never saw a 12" version. Is it the same? I totally forgot this version existed.
Getting old is NOT fun. I must take my Gingko Biloba. BUT, as Jiminy Glick,(Martin Short on "Primetime Glick") says "I always forget to take it"!!!!!

Here's the info from my 12" single:
Blancmange 12" on London Records BLANX 8 (1984)
A-1) The Day Before You Came (No time listed on the label. What is it with European pressings not listing the time?! Anyway, it's pretty long so I guess it is the same as the LP)
B-1) Feel Me (Live Version) (Very nice live version from Hammersmith Palais-May 24, 1984)
B-2) All things Are Nice (Version)
The cover art is interesting. On the front is an illustration of a very messy living room, but when you flip the cover over the room is clean and neat and one can see a pair of red woman's shoes. She came, she cleaned, she conquered!
