RECORDS WE HAVE LOVED #9 FREEEZE - I.O.U.

I think this was possibly one of my all time favourite songs for mixing with other tracks, even though it was a bitch and even though it was a drum machine, so shouldn't have been so inconsistent in tempo. The possibilities it gave you were endless.

This record seemed to dominate the dancefloor for an absolute age BITD and was soooooo damned strong.

Was it global or just a US/UK thing?

Sample, stutter or just talk normally about this (limited?) electro pop monster.

Hmmmm, that record was a typical Baker-production and it certainly wasn't bad but it sounded (and still does) cold to me.

It's a great rhythm-track but it doesn't attract me to the dancefloor but I would stay on my seat and listen to it with interest.

It was big over here and still is played a lot but I have to say that I am not a big Baker-fan. Records like New Order's "Confusion" didn't touch me and that was his work too. To me, when records like that began conquering the clubs, I was getting out of them

Yep-but I "stayed out" of the clubs a few years (that doesn't mean I never went out but certainly not as frequent as during the disco-days) when the scene was changing into the electro-stuff. I started going out when I was 14 (illegal-but I looked much older :D) .

Now, there were a few gay-clubs who continued to follow the real (?) disco but the problem was that I couldn't get my girlfriend in so when we did clubs it usually turned out that she was on the floor (she liked the new stuff) and I was talking at the bar. I totally flipped when Stock, Aitken and Waterman and same-style-people (Jellybean ) were the new kids in town. OMG, did they ruin it for me!! I stayed out of the discos, period and I was having my own fun with doing radioshows and playing the vintage music on our attractions.

So now you also have the answer to the fact that I don't know a lot about records that were made during that period. Of course I know them but I don't cherish them and I don't know many details about them ( also stuff like Spagna, Hazell Dean and so on).

And then alternative clubs were opening who musically went back to the underground and classic stuff like the "Beau Bruxelles" and "Zazou" and the fun came back. The only positive thing about the mid-80's is that I could buy a great amount of classic vinyl very cheap, since nobody was interested in it. So I definitely kept collecting.

This was one of those songs that gave me a somewhat pleasure. I loved it in the clubs while at the same time it was so different from the traditional disco I love so much.

I got tired fast of this one. It was really long and had say it all on the first 2 or 3 minutes.
I remember having this on tape: it occupied like half a cassette side and I had to fast-forward for a while to get to the next song! :)

Got this as promotion on 7", 12" and later in 12" with other cover so they pushed rather hard for this one. I think it made top 20 in Scandinavian charts. By the way, is it the same freeeze as in "Southern freeze", Flyin High, Keep in Touch etc. ?

Hey efunk. It makes little sense now that I read it. If I post late night then sometimes I type poorly. Sometimes I do this at work and I don't wanna get busted posting here so I often rush
Anyway I guess I was trying to say I kinda liked the song despite it's non disco style.

This is a decent song - I've always liked it though I wouldn't say I loved it.

There's only one real train-wreck moment in it (for me) and that's when the male lead starts talking. I really can't stand that. It worked on ABC's records but it doesn't work here (In my opinion). Other than that I like it, it's a real propulsive kind of groove.

always loved "I.O.U." Reminds me of Company B's "Fascinated", a song I'd like to have on CD but will not pay a ton of money for.

Re: RECORDS WE HAVE LOVED #9 FREEEZE - I.O.U.

I hate it back then, but I love it now.

When 70's disco vanished, night-clubs over here began to heavily play brazilian stuff (gafieira or samba)...

...plus new wave rock (The Police, Madness, B-52s, etc...)...
...plus synth pop (Thomas Dolby, Soft Cell, etc...)...
...plus Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, etc...

Slowly, towards the mid 80's, electronic-disco began to infiltrate again into clubs.

So for a while in the very early 80's, I was away from discotheques because I couldn't stand samba. Then slowly I began getting into clubs again.

Then one day I went to SÓTÃO DISCO CLUB in Copacabana (around 1984) and IOU was playing...

    ... My thoughts were:

What the hell is this type of music?
    What happened to disco music?
What are all these machanical bleeps and metallic sounds?

Someone who was with me there said: "How come? This is DISCO MUSIC".

And I kept thinking : "It doesn't sound like disco-music".

My ears were used to the orchestral sounds of the 70's.
... IOU sounded so ALIEN to my ears....
... I thought it was too noisy...

But now many years have passed... I have fond memories of the 80's and of those times... I like that song very much now.

Re: RECORDS WE HAVE LOVED #9 FREEEZE - I.O.U.

Just to complete the post above:

In the very early 80's (around 1982/83) there was no sign of disco in the clubs, although the nights were generally ended with a small set of disco classics (Patrick Juvet, Cerrone, Patrick Hernandez, Tavares, Santa Esmeralda, Village People, El Coco, Trammps, etc...).

Early 80's WEST END RECORDS never made it...
American Bobby "O" Hi-NRG records never made it...
    Early Italo Disco? You're joking...
(Don't Cry Tonight by Savage being the only exception)

But around 1984/1985, it wasn't just IOU by Freeze...
The ALIEN sound I mentioned in the post above came from tunes like:

LOVE RIDE by VIKKI LOVE & NUANCE
ARE YOU READY by THE ARMED GANG
TOUCH ME by FONDA RAE & WISH
POINT OF NO RETURN by EXPOSÉ

A few years later someone told me that all that electronic disco music from 1984 onwards was called HI-NRG...
But all this was too underground.
    No one really knew it.
With few exceptions, none of these records were released over here.
We were all fumbling in the dark here in Brazil.

Today everybody hears the same music.
That time, no one knew it.
    It was too underground.
The only music known by the masses was new wave rock and synth pop.

Re: RECORDS WE HAVE LOVED #9 FREEEZE - I.O.U.

In my neck of the woods "iou" was a massive "Break dancing" hit, I worked a club at the time with lots of teens and they coudn't get enough of this song, they will form circles and take turns showing off their moves in the center(also doing the Robot dance), I used to extend it for them forever using the excellent "Dub U" flip side and really enjoyed teasing them by playing the synth intro back to back over and over and over . this song (and dub) had so many changes and was so much fun to play with that never got tired for me8-)

"Pop goes my love" soon followed, another one that was fun to Deejay with including the "scratch goes my dub" side , this 12" also had a short instrumental called "No need for greed" that I also used on this crowd with good results. 8-)

That's 'coz too many are stuck in the 7T's. Personally I loved the music of the 8T's, even though I was fast approaching middle age.

Recently I picked up Loveride in a long version on CD. Boy was I happy to have it in that format....at long last. Now, if only I could persuade someone to search out Pennye Ford's Dangerous (and a few others from the era) and put them on a CD, I'd be even happier.

Its a cheesy tune with horrible weedy vocals.

You've dissed many many far better records

Re: RECORDS WE HAVE LOVED #9 FREEEZE - I.O.U.

I loved IOU, loved listening to it or dancing to it. It did wear thin after a few weekends though.
I recently listened again & it still sounds good, although I agree on the spoken part - always hated that. It also has that Arthur Baker sound, which was cool at the time, but again - I grew very, very tired of his sound as the 80's progressed.
Part of the reason I liked it, was that it was a nice bridge between the dance music I loved, and all the new wave stuff I was into at the time.

Most of those electro, syth, whatever tracks had limited appeal to me anyways. I would get tired of the sound of a particular track fairly fast - Let the Music Play, Pac Jam, Planet Rock, Situtation, etc. and they would get played to death in the particular club I went to.

I agree that the vocals are weedy and the spoken part sorta makes me cringe, BUT the essence of the track wasn't the vocals or spoken part. For a DJ in 1982, it was manna from heaven.

Yes, its well produced but Arthur Baker made many better records.

It sounds like you were very late on the electro thing Quinny as this wasn't an exiting record for anyone who knew their stuff.

I guess at least 500 youngsters pack every weekend into a giant Dance floor surrounded by giant Speakers punching thousands of watts will disagree with you, I guess you had to be there to feel the real thing.

Here this is a CD from a popular Miami club of the time, (mid 80's) all this are electro freestyle hits, many produced locally in Miami, which was packed with punter dancing and breakdancing.

Check out this dance floor in a local club today, the same crowd now 40 something still getting down to the same music!!! 8-)
