RECORDS WE HAVE LOVED #6 DONNA SUMMER - I FEEL LOVE

Even I have to acknowledge that this was probably THE RECORD of the spring/summer of '77.

It was a record that found instant dancefloor acceptance and kept on going and going. As soon as it was released in a new territory, I'd have to play it all over again, with a knowing kinda grin all over my face (DJs and ex DJs will know exactly what I'm on about). I find it fascinating these days to hear the backing track and how much those synth/moog lines went out of sync ( a good quarter beat in places, eh?).

One of the few Donna Summer records that I can listen to nowadays and still get fairly excited about.

    Gurgle with joy, paste with pride, splurge or grunt, but please, let's not turn this into a Summerfest. We're discussing I F E E L L O V E, O.K.

I thought the building was falling down

I was sick of "Last Dance"
I don't particularly like "Heaven Knows"
How can we forgive her for getting in bed with Anita Bryant with the famous quote, directed right at the demographic that MADE her, "I love all of you, just not the way you are now..."
However, the first time I heard "I Feel Love" and the absence of the distortion caused by a pedal drum; no bass slap; just a sublimely synthesized, overwhelming bass beat that took me in like a womb and made me move; whilst Donna sang so minimally, proving that yes, less IS more; I was entranced by the tune and bought it the next day. A week later, I bought bigger speakers that could reproduce it. A week after that, I bought a new cartridge for my turntable that would do better with the signal. My amp was already putting out plenty o' power - tubes, no less!
To this day, when I put that song on, so many memories come back when I close my eyes, I almost smell the poppers, I almost smell the sweat (it sure was a later-in-the-night cut). And when the song ends, I wonder why Casablanca and Ms. Summer failed to create more of this.
    - Yours, musically

Efunk, I didn't know you felt that way about Donna?
Paul (my clone from my former home state :D ), I'm still tired of Last Dance. To see you bring up Anita Bryant reminds me so much of the culture war underway. Did Donna really embrace Anita's rants?
As for the topic of discussion, great tune to be best appreciated on a capable sound system, now and even BITD at the better clubs.

    Paul,

I'm not really a Donna hater.... I can just think of other songs by other Diva's that are much better.... besides, I'll reveal my favorites by her in the ARTIST SPOTLIGHT series....

The "electric" Donna. A step further than the smooth-disco.

I like it very much but I prefer the Patrick Cowley-rmx (15'39") wich is simply gorgeous.

My favourite Donna-stuff still remains the erotic-discorecords she made.

Hey, it's the only discostar I ever kissed and she's in my heart forever.

1st record, length, B side & my dad

    .

    .

Before I bought any of her albums, I bought this single. I was pleased it was the full length, since Top 40 radio tended to fade it out before her "ooh I got you...what you do..." near the end. It was listed as the B side though, with "Can't We Just Sit Down (& Talk It Over)" as side A. My dad thought she was singing "Happy Love". Influential sound for sure.
