This week was a great week @ Larry Holmes Ringside as we got two busloads of people from Philadelphia wanting to get away and check out the club. An older crowd with great appeal, here were some of the classics I played this week:

Skin Tight - The Ohio Players
    Holy Ghost - The Bar-Kays
    Hi-Tension - Hi-Tension
Nights over Egypt - The Jones Girls
Mysteries of the world - MFSB
The Magnificent dance - The Clash
    Runaway love - Linda Clifford
I wanna be where you are - Michael Jackson
Do it any way you wanna - Cashmere

to name a few. Some of the slow jams played were:

My first love - Rene & Angela
Why have I lost you - Cameo
Wish you were mine - The Manhattans
This must be heaven - Brainstorm
Who has the time - Con Funk Shun

Fun night for me; As always, hopes this brings back memories for some of you. Love to hear your comments on any of these. Jazz and Blax, I look forward to hearing from you guys.

    Easy,

Sam "Damn Good" Jam......wait, I'm taking a deep breath........"HOLY GHOST" by BARKAYS IS ONE OF ALL-TIME FAVOURITE FUNKY SONGS!!!!! Great strong vocals by Larry Dodson plus the well known Barkays funky style. Simply the best. If you had been played only this track on the entire party......I would be fully satisfied, and believe me, I wouldnt be alone, isnt it Zeca?

Jones Girls, oh yeah, I dig this track. Linda Cliford's too!! In fact.....the set is great, Sammy!! As always I would to say!!!

    Take care,

    Blaxman

Happy to hear you liked the songs in the set. Just like you, I love 'Holy Ghost'. Seems to me my dream party would be DJ'ing and having Senshores de Groove and The Jazz Pilgrims in the house to enjoy. I wouldn't need anyone else. Curious to hear what Zeca thinks. Talk to you soon.

Having just been posting on the "Disco Songs I Hate" thread, and it makes me MAD!! Nice one Sammy (as always!). Thanks for taking the trouble to share your night with us again. I do appreciate it!!

It's nice to hear that you got a good crowd for this one!! Watch out next week for a JUMBO JET out of LONDON HEATHROW flying direct to the LARRY HOLMES RINGSIDE. One day we'll be coming!!!

Let's start with HI TENSION. That is probably the best BRITISH disco record of 'em all! It's got that real raw funky sound. That used to get the JAZZ PILGRIMS up on the floor en masse many a time!! "HI TENSION! THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE - SUPERSTAR!" I would dance to that any time.

Nice to see you picked out "Runaway Love". That track has always been her biggest track here in England. In fact I like that whole LP. A Friday night fave of mine... Did you hear the dog howling, by the way? Shades of "Go Away Little Boy" don't you think???

Nights Over Egypt - I love that track for its sophistication. Great harmonies. Oh yes - and you can just imagine the sand swirling around in the desert! I love to play that track. It's going on my next minidisc compilation!!

MFSB - another track I love. Another JAZZ PILGRIMS favourite!

And as for the Ohio Players and the Bar-Kays. That must have got the place ROCKIN'!!! As you know, I'm really gettin' into that Seventies funk!!

I like your slowies too!. Confunkshun are a band I really like but know very little of. I have one 7-inch and one 12-inch of their music. Any recommendations about their choiciest tunes would be gratefully received!!

Which tracks did the crowd like the best??

By the way, Sammy, Blax and Zeca (and anybody else!) keep an eye on the EVENTS section because I will be recommending a 70's funk show on an UK radio station which broadcasts on the web. Look out for that one ...

Well.....I have eight Con Funk Shun albuns. They are one of my fave bands. I miss the early albuns saddly.

Sammy, do you know the early tracks/albuns from Con Funk Shun?? I mean from 73 to 79.

Jazz, from now on, this radio show is what I'm waiting for.

    Easy.

BTW, how are your Queen's party hangover?

Our street party was in North London and started at around 2 in the afternoon, and finished at 11 in the evening. We carried on until 2 in the morning ... OUCH! MY HEAD!

There was a disco, which was playing in the street. The DJ played about 2 decent records all afternoon - "Boogie Wonderland" and "Superstition". Maybe I should have asked for "Running Away" !!!

My son was the happiest - he played footie non-stop from around 2.30 until 10.30!!!! 8 hours virtually non-stop!!

    Jazz:

Thanks for the comments and I'm happy to hear you enjoyed most of the playlist. It's unreal how much you, Blax and I enjoy the same style of music. As for Con Funk Shun, great band from the '70's and early '80's led by Michael Cooper who had a brief solo career in the '80's. Best LP was easily 'Secrets' in 1977. This LP featured probably their biggest funk hit 'Ffun'. The LP as a whole is fantastic. The LP after this was 'Candy' from 1978 which featured the very funky 'Chase me'. Some other notable LP's were 'Loveshine' from either 1978 or '79 and the one from 1980, whose name escapes me (I'm at work), which features 'By your side'. Great band to say the least. As for flying in from London, as I stated before I would love to spin for the Jazz Pilgrims and Senshores de Groove. I think that would have to be a marathon party because we would probably go through every great era and song from the '70's and '80's. I will say that knowing you and Blaxman enjoy the same type of music makes it alot more fun in picking songs to play now. Finally, the songs that the crowd were feeling the most were definitely 'Holy ghost' and they absolutely loved when I played 'I wanna be where you are' by the young Michael Jackson.

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

By the way, definitely looking out for that funk show on UK radio. Keep me posted.

The Confunkshun 7-inch I have is "Got To Be Enough" and I think it is from their 1980 offering. (I am also at work..). It really is a good funky track, the crisp beat being the highlight of the record for me.

I'm pretty sure 'Got to be enough' is the title of the LP from 1980 with 'By your side'. I'm definitely checking for that funk show info. By the way, 'Hi-Tension', I love that jam and the LP is great. 'British Hustle', 'You're my Girl' I love those songs. Whatever happened to that band? Did they ever release anything after the 'Hi-Tension' LP?

Sammy, do you know the Con Funk Shun's Album called "Memphis Sessions"? I know it is unreleased tracks recorded at Stax (if I'm not wrong)around 73/74. I cant stop to wonder...........

BTW, my fave "CFS" album is "TOUCH" from 1981. I think it is one of the best funk albuns in history. Is it an underated album?
I love the tracks "TOO TIGHT", "TOUCH", "LADY's WILD", "PLAY WIDIT" and the ballads are great too! Hey, I think I listed the entire album.

    Peace.

Sammy, Hi Tension had another UK club success with "You Make Me happy" around 1984 - a nice mid-tempo floating sort of soul record - if you understand what I mean by that .. Very nice too.

And Blax - I won't upset you any more!!

Finally - My son certainly does not get his energy from me!!

While I have heard about 'Memphis Sessions', I do not have it. Stax records is another great genre of soul music we have not even talked about yet. As for the 'Touch' LP, I agree it is underrated, especially 'Too Tight' which I really dig. I think my next happy hour may focus on some of the more underrated funk/dance bands of the '70's & '80's. For example, bands such as:

    Heaven & Earth
    The Blackbyrds
    Aurra
    Chocolate Milk
    The Muscle Schoals Horns

just to name a few off the top of my head. Can't wait to go diggin' in the crates.

    But....wait......cannot be......I dont know "Heaven & Earth"!!!
Who are "Heaven & Earth" ??
    Now I'm really curious!!!

    Blaxman:

Happy to see you're interested in my next playlist. As for Heaven & Earth, a very underrated band from the late '70's and early '80's. I have two LP's entitled:

    Fantasy (1979) Mercury Records
    That's love (1981) WMOT Records

Both are great and the band themselves are equally adept at funk jams as they are at beautiful soulful love ballads. I believe they had deep gospel roots based on the lyrical content of their music. One thing to note is that on the 'Fantasy' LP they do a cover of the classic ballad 'I only have eyes for you' which is easily one of the best I've ever heard and my personal favorite cover of this song. Can't wait till this coming Friday. Stay tuned.

And don't forget me - I'm waiting too!!!

I am looking forward to see which Blackbyrds tracks you will be playing, Sammy, as I think the Donald Byrd/Blackbyrds output fronm the early to mid 70's was very influential on jazz fusion music. More comments when I see the playlist!!

And there were a couple of early Aurra trax that I can't remember the name of - lookin' forward to seeing those!

BTW, did you get a chance to listen to Greg Edwards on Jazz FM? I admit - I didn't listen but only recorded it. Will listen during the week. I was watching a rerun of the England vs Argentina match and enjoying the moment ...

I was out shopping in London today, and I picked up a Con Funk Shun "Best Of" CD. So far I've played the long version of "Got To Be Enough" (a great improvement on my slightly scratched 7-inch edit!) and that track you mentioned "Ffun". That track is a real corker - seriously funky!! - I am sure I shall be playing it heavily over the next few weeks. "Chase Me" is also on the CD. I shall play the rest of the CD tomorrow.

Thanks for your recommendations and advice, Sammy!! Much appreciated!!

BTW In the soul scene that I was into in England in the Seventies, Con Funk Shun never made it across the Atlantic. I am sure I don't ever recall hearing a Con Funk Shun track being played in a UK disco. Well, I guess some US bands don't get played here. SHAME!

I only got round to picking up that 7-inch, because I used to follow the US R'n'B charts, and quite often used to find import US 7-inch singles in the specialist shops in London. That's how I bought the Vernon Burch 7-inch I have (Fun City) as well!

    Cheers

Great buy on that Con Funk Shun CD, I have that also. One thing about Con Funk Shun, like alot of the great bands of the seventies, they were also great at writing and recording beautiful slow songs if you have an appreciation for that; I do. Have "Ffun" with you new disc.

    Hi friends,

Let me say something, CON FUNK SHUN is one of my top fave bands!! My 1980 "TOUCH" LP is one of the most played records from my collection for the last 22 years. The cover of this album is almost destroyed by the thousands of in and outs!

    Peace.
