anyone remember s/fransisco dance your ass off

does anyone remember a nightclub in the san fransisco area colled dance your ass off? around 75/76 a record turned up in the north of england by pop-a-groove called "dance your ass off" it was supposed to be the ending record from a club of the same name in frisco.the club had a logo of a girl dancing she was split in half her face looking towards her butt with a surprised look cos shed danced her ass off!following the famous wigan casino all nighters there was an all day club in manchester called the ritz this club lovingly stole the logo and it became dance your ass off at the ritz i still have a badge of the logo somewhere.anyone remember anything about this? im sure im correct as i seem to remember seeing a picture of the club in a mag a year or so later but i think it had closed down.cumonn marky you were there!

Yeah, I remember the club. It was on Broadway. Just above the financial district.

BUT, it was--Straight, Straight, Straight!!!!

So, NO I NEVER went there. But there was a club near there called, um...The City-- that I did go to some times. This was Gay & Straight but a little too trendy, upscale for my tastes. Jussi writes about this club in his book "Saturday Night Forever", but barely mentions Trocadero!!!! Why, Jussi, why???? I remember seeing Grace Jones there straddling a motorcycle, singing "I Need A Man". I thought she needed a vocal coach.

I liked the clubs South Of Market in the industrial warehouse side of town--Trocadero, especially. Dreamland and The End Up were down there too as well as all those Leather bars. Today, a few sleazy things exist down there...but, for the most part, it's been totally yuppified. ;(

Ooooo, please don't call it "Frisco". Yikes! That's like fingernails on a chalkboard to us native San Franciscans!!

But, back to your question, "Dance Your Ass Off" was in the touristy part of Broadway, actually off Kearny Street. My relatives lived closed by so when I used to see the club when I used to visit. Even back then, I didn't have any desire to enter! The City disco was the definitely the place for those in the know to go in that area during the mid to late 70s.

Dance Your Ass Off ...I didn't lose too many calories there for sure. During the June/July season of 1978 my San Francisco mates took me there the music was always danceable but the deejaying just average. But, it still was one of the most popular venues in town and people remember it fondly. The Trocadero was naturally indefinitely superior. I remember the tunes that greeted me the first time I walked into that establisment, Back To Music by Theo Vaness and Kebekelektrik's War Dance. The US edition of the book does give the place a brief mention but indeed, shame on me not writing about the Trocadero more. I'll take my 20 lashes like a man.

It's a long time since the post regarding "Dance Your Ass Off". I too got to The City disco in the Transamerica Pyramid and I have fond memories of "disco days" in 1978 and buying "I love the nightlife" by Alcia Bridges in Frisco - opps, sorry San Francisco!

Here's an excuse for me to post a couple of youtube clips of tracks that sing about good old Frisco. Notice in the Village People video that the people in it are mostly different from the later Village People videos and album covers. Keep an eye out for an extreme close-up! :)

The Eastside Connection track became a break beat anthem because of the breakdown near the end (at 4:20, which is partially looped in this youtube posting). Slick Rick used it in his rap track Mona Lisa.
