    Sylvester Song Versions

Having recently looked at the Disco A-Z list, and coming across some of the Sylvester records listed, Step II in particular, I was amazed to discover that the versions of "Dance (Disco Heat)" and "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" are the versions heard on virtually any Sylvester compilation CD, time length-wise. I have on CD the 8:08 version of "Dance (Disco Heat)", with Two Tons giving it all they got in the second half of the song. Does anyone know if this was a promo-only version? Also, the version of "Mighty Real" that was on the "Smokin' Disco" CD is 6:18, and not the version on the aforementioned Sylvester LP with regards to time length. Were these versions promo-only versions?

    Re: Sylvester Song Versions

Reading the label of my US 12" single, both songs are featured on it (Fantasy D-102) mixed by Jim Stern:

    A: Dance Disco heat 8:20
B: You Make Me Feel Mighty Real 6:17

Both are different from the lp versions.

But when «You Make Me Feel Mighty Real» became a hit, the 12" was re-issued; the original # would've have been D-140 but they choose to release it with the old D-102 name putting «You Make Me Feel Mighty Real» on the A-side and «Dance Disco heat» on the B-side, both songs in their lp version.
Sylvester - Dance (Disco Heat) / You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)

The remixed versions are only available on the US and Canadian pressings and on the coloured German one (with «You Make Me Feel Mighty Real» on the A-side and «Dance Disco heat» on the B-side):
Sylvester - You Make Me Feel Like (Mighty Real)

Both remixes are also available on the cd compilation «Smokin' disco».

I prefer the 12" remixes over the album versions, myself. I searched for years for those on CD till I came across the Smokin' Disco CD.

There was also a slightly longer version of "Dance (Disco Heat)" in which Sylvester says, "What? You wanna do what? Not right here..." I have this version on CD and it clocks in at 8:31 or so. The Smokin' Disco version is about twenty minutes shorter.

I prefer the LP version of Dance (Disco Heat) as it's tighter-sounding IMO but I prefer the 12" version of YMMF(MR) because I find the LP version has less subtle-sounding synth effects & I don't like the repetitive wailing at the end - this is edited out on the 12".:icon_razz:

I wish I knew...back in the days when I was downloading disco music like crazy on the computer, I got this slightly extended version which I had heard nowhere else. I like hearing Sylvester in his actual speaking voice at the end.

As for "You Make Me Feel", I too prefer the 12" as opposed to the LP version where he oooooooohs like he's in mourning. I love it when he goes into the highest voice he can muster, just to say "It's real!"

    Re: Sylvester Song Versions

Just wanted to add some scans and facts...

Dance... was released as a single, first. Mighty Real was released as a single, second.

The first promo 12" was D-102
    A - Dance... @ 5:54
    B - Mighty Real @ 6:39

The second promo 12" was also released as D-102
    A - Dance... @ 8:20
    B - Mighty Real @ 6:17

Outside of the times listed, the latter D-102 is indistiguishable from the former, unless you look at the Master # etchings on the A Sides.
    The first Side A, is: D102A1 / FS52478
    The second Side A, is: D102ARE1 / FS56978

Although the B Sides have different times listed for Mighty Real, they're the exact same versions, pressed from the exact same Master plates: D102B1 / FS57478. And they run at identical bpms. (flange locks from start to finish)

The LP versions are different for both. With Dance... @ 5:50 & Might Real @ 6:30.

The German 12" of Mighty Real is the US LP version, which leads me to believe the LP was released after both of the 12" singles. As I'd imagine the Euro releases would've used the most recent mixes available.

I received all my US copies from the record pool. And I honestly can't remember whether I received the LP first, or last. It's just too long ago. And those particular synapses haven't fired in years! I bought the German 12" cause it was on glow-in-the-dark vinyl.

Personally, I like the LP version of Dance... cause it has that kick-ass synth break towards the end, that's buried in the previous mixes. But the original 12" has all of his dialogue at the end of the mix. Which I love! But you have to run the mix all the way to the end of the fade, and keep turning it up, while mixing. So, it's novelty isn't quite worth the effort that goes into utilizing it. And the second 12" version of Dance... just goes on for too long, as far as I'm concerned.

That dialogue is on both of the pro 12" mixes. It actually goes on, one phrase longer, on the 5:54 version, than it does on the 8:20 version

Do you wanna dance with me?
Are you sure you wanna dance with me?
Well then, get up. Get up.

Are you having a good time, darling?
Are you sure the music's loud enough?
    What? You wanna do what?
Not right here. <-----last phrase on the 8:20
Just come on now, dance... <-----last phrase on the 5:54

Then, of course, there's the 1988 Fantasy release of the ULTIMIX version (8:01), which ends with all the dialogue at an audible level, and Syl saying "Get Out Of My Nightmare!"

Thanks for walking through this step by step Stephen! I have to admit I was getting a little confused in all this!! :icon_confused:

As I've said elsewhere ... back in the day .... I was grateful just to have "a" version of a particular song .....never mind every possible alternate .

This is part of what makes reliving this so enjoyable ...Knowing a song you've listened to a certain way all your life and then learning of these other versions that had been out there but were unbeknown to you . Its so fascinating to then experience a familiar song with a variable twist to its sound. :icon_cool:

Looking forward to digging out Sylvester's LP and giving those cuts a closer listen.:icon_biggrin:

Thanks for the info. Dammit, dammit, dammit, I *HATE* it when they revise albums or singles without changing the catalog number!

Order a US/CA vinyl LP of "Rio" by Duran Duran or "Adventures Of" by Captain Sky, and it's like a lottery as to which of the three versions you'll end up with.

I have the commercial 12" of "Disco Heat"... so now I have to track down 2 of these promos that probably go for $50 each? Ack!
