ARTIST SPOTLIGHT #8 - GEORGE McCRAE

Back to an early pioneer artist since the last artist I featured did so well...

George had several hit LP's, however other than ROCK YOUR BABY he never really got it going... I GET LIFTED snuck in at #37 on the pop charts to round out his top 40 hits.

Here is a list of my favorites:

    ROCK YOUR BABY
    I GET LIFTED
    I CAN'T LEAVE YOU ALONE

George was a bit of a one hit wonder in all honesty. What a one hit, what a wonder! Rock Your Baby is a 200% disco classic.

I also liked I Get Lifted, but found his stuff too samey and too average overall.

"Rock Your baby" for sure is etched in my mind and a pivotal Disco song. His later Gregg Diamond produced album was a big letdown though.

The first notes of "Rock your baby" always make me remember my first girlfriend. In fact it was the first slow I ever danced to with someone I really loved.

It's one of those records that makes you mellow and never gets boring, even after 1000 times.

But for George, "I can't leave you alone" was also excellent but that was all there was I'm afraid.

Contains all the elements you would want for being a classic... I'm sure that i've played it 1000 times... and no hint that i'll get sick of it...

I found the "Rock your baby" LP at the fair recently and was surprised at how good the first side is. Don't know about the other records, though.
The other day I downloaded a KC & The Sunshine Band version of "Rock your baby". I expected just the basic track without the vocals, but found there were some funky horns added. Pretty nice. 8)

"Rock your baby" was originally written by Casey and Finch for KC & The Sunshine Band but Casey couldn't reach the high vocals, so another singer was searched and when George came to the studio to look for his wife Gwen, he did the test and the rest is history.
