2 of their albums had been remastered on cd in the " masters of funk and soul" collection. You can have have their fist album "dayton" (1980) and the wonderful "hot fun" (1982) for 12 euros each on cd!
I really like this group!
I love Dayton and the whole Solar sound that they represent. They did stand in the shadows of other solar artists like Whispers, Midnight Star and most noticably Shalamar, but nevertheless they had many a good song to offer.
favs of mine:
The Sound Of Music (their biggest hit I guess)
Out Tonight
I only have two dayton LP's though...Cutie Pie (1981) and Feel The Music (1983) - good to see they have started putting some out on cd! :)
I could get one good compilation out of all their best stuff - they were very capable but their LPs weren't brilliant. 'Feel The Music' was probably their most consistent (and therefore, most popular) set. The following album ('This Time') was pretty bad - and, perhaps wisely, their last. :-?
'Meet The Man' from 'Hot Fun' is definitley one of the best tracks of its era - a joyous anthem and a killer production sound. Pity this was never on 12".
Found a US 12" of 'Out Tonight' last year, though...the world certainly kept that one quiet!
What would you do without your muesli...where would you be without a bowl?
on the first album (1980) the last song "daytime friend" is exellent!
Now here's a group that I didn't have the pleasure of hearing...
so, who do they sound like.... similarly, of course.![]()
it depends of the album . the fist one from 1980 is very disco but the the third and fourth from 1982&84 are very funky.Originally Written by efunk_adelic
if you have msn i'll give you some tracks in order to allow u to judge before buyin!
If you like Midnight star, cameo, rick james, prince,Michael Jackson, The jacksons, stevie WOnder,Zapp,Indeep, D-Train,M-tume,Network,Candela,high Fashion,The time, elbray Debarge,Lakeside, The whispers, bobby Nunn and all the others, YOU ARE MY FRIEND!!!!
I was actually in the frame to do an official remix on 'The Sound Of Music', but nothing came of it. I had lotsa phone calls, sent in a rough cassette copy of what I thought it needed doing to it and then it started to sell well and the record company didn't bother.
To this day, I don't know how or why my name was put forward. Seems like I had friends in places I wasn't aware of.
Like a lot of "The Sound Of Music". :D
Dayton was great. "The sound of music" is my favo.
Perhaps you heard the recent hit from Mylo "The pressure" and that one really reminds me of Dayton. Same vocoderstyle, same keyboards.
Yeah,Videoskooter, that Mylo it΄s one of my favourite modern Electro-Funk styled track, and play it a lot in my sets. That track reminds me of Dayton,Midnight Star and also Zapp...
Promise
Have you noticed the similarity between 'Meet The Man' (1982) and BB&Q's 'Time For Love' (1981)? Both great tracks.Originally Written by Forrrce
Also agree with Buckaroo that 'Promise Me' is fabulous.
They are indeed very similar - and as you say, great.Originally Written by billywho
