#2 is 'There's Never Been No One (Like You)' by Kenix Music, on West End.

#3 may be the Three Degrees' version of 'My Simple Heart'. It was a hit here, but I haven't heard it since the time ('79/'80). This version does sound more recent, though.

Just remembered - Carol Douglas recorded 'My Simple Heart' for Next Plateau. That's probably the version you've posted.

The first one is a forgotten treasure!

Don Ray "Midnight madness" (Album: Garden of love)

The sample you placed in this topic is the instrumental break which makes it a little difficult perhaps to identify. The rest of that track is vintage Cerrone-Don Ray-stuff.

    A great track!!!

That version of "The Look Of Love" is the old classic written by Burt Bacharach/Hal David. If you look in iTunes, try the version that was recorded by Sergio Mendes and you'll see what I mean.

I heard the 4th sample, DAMN that sounded great!

Has anyone tried a Google search? I did.

Incidently, there were literally 100s of versions to 'Look of Love,' & I believe it started with Dusty Springfield in the 60s from her Casino Royale soundtrack. Most of them were easy listening slow jams and a select few were faster and otherwise danceable versions (even Telex jumped on the bandwagon, but it wasn't them, I heard it).

The only 2 I came up with didn't have any samples so I don't know if either of them are what you wan't, but I DO know they were disco versions redone in 78-79. Maybe someone can do a better job at this because I really want to find out too! Here are the artists....

    1. Elaine & Ellen
    2. Queen Samantha

Please let me know someone? Good luck all & God bless Discomusic.com.

Song No. 4 "The Look of Love"

Thank goodness I read the other posts before I, too mentioned the Bacharach/David connection. Diana Krall, wife of Elvis Costello and the woman who nearly has single-handedly financially rescued the Verve record label (Universal's jazz and urban label) has issued an album called "The Look of Love" and the song with the same arrangement only performed far more elegantly appears on her album "Live in Paris." (Her latest opus focuses on the lyrics of her husband and is entitled "The girl in the other room.")

Now to the point: The song is so richly done, with such magnificent piano solos, I'm just waiting for a clever mix-master out there to put a decent beat behind it and do it justice. Those of you who have a jazz background and are also mixers have special reason to undertake this project.(This one, I dare say, will need to be done electronically, not old-school; the dynamics just prohibit it; unless Robbie Leslie's listening - he could do it.) The Diana Krall version of the song on "Live In Paris" was the last performance given by the great bassist Ray Brown that was recorded before his recent passing. And as we all know, when it comes to dancing, the bass line has an awful lot to do with it. Brown's entire body of work on "Live on Paris" is classic jazz with his flair of soul and his delightful sense of humour, which comes through loud and clear.

I already have ProTools set up and am setting up a synth emulation of Brown's work on Krall's version of the jazz classic "I Love Being Here with You" (also from "Live in Paris") and will mix into it the Krall version, the Rosemary Clooney version, and the Gene Harris piano (instrumental) version; and hopefully come up with a happy-go-lucky, very retro sounding, danceable type of groove. That song, however, will be a piece of cake compared to "Look of Love." I repeat, I would be delighted to hear someone do it justice. (By the way, there must be at least 25 really, really fine jazz versions of that song and another 15 pop versions.)

All the best, Judydoggie (mail your mix to jazz@asianfusion.net)
