Diana Ross "What You Gave Me" OR "Your Love I

This Miss Ross chat has got me thinking, which of these two forgotten Diana disco numbers do people like more?

Following the classic "Love Hangover" and preceding her "The Boss"/"Diana" singles , they are often lost in the shuffle. My vote goes for the more poppy "What You Gave Me"

I prefer the Giorgio-esque arranged version of "Livin', Lovin' & Givin'" from the "Ross" LP & "Thank God It's Friday" soundtrack. This one got no respect.

(Correction: the version on "TGIF" is NOT the Giorgio-inspired remix: I played it last night; it's a shortened version of the original version, I guess--no trancey synths)

    "Your Love Is So Good For Me" is OK to pretty good but too repetitive, me thinks; it's a groove in search of a song (Richard Perry produced that "Baby It's Me" LP);
"What You Gave Me" is pretty OK also....I recently put both on tapes. Don't recall ever hearing either of them played at a club in SF. Maybe I wasn't paying attention again???

Hey Marky, I played this one the other day and have to agree that it is really good. Seem to have overlooked that for some reason, but will keep it in rotation.

    Hey Bernie,

One of Miss Ross' recent compilations has the original version of "Livin', Lovin' & Givin" on it--without the Giorgio styled synths. Apparently, the Diana-Goes-Donna synth arrangement was tacked on after the original track was done. Not nearly as good...sorta like "Last Time I saw Him" hokey. I'm even thinking there was a BANJO!!! Maybe I'm making that up.

Of the two, I gave "Your Love..." more club play. Repetitive groove, but good groove none the less. "What You Gave Me" is more a radio song for me.

Isn't the original "Ross" LP mix of LL&G on the new Diana 2CD issue? I really need to get me that...

Hey! Can anyone shed some light on the Diana cut "we Can never light that old flame again" and "sweet summertime living"???

I think the version of "Livin', Lovin' and Givin'" sans the Giorgio-esque sounds was heard in the TGIF film. I'd like to know which version of that appears on any of Miss Ross' compilations.

"Sweet Summertime Lovin'" is a nice song, with catchy lyrics and a jazzy, breezy style in both vocals and arrangements.

"Your Love Is So Good For Me" is a feel-good radio-ready song.

OK, I pulled it all out last night.

The original version of "LOVIN, Livin' & Givin" (I changed the order in my post...to me it shoulda been titled "Since You Came"...cause that's what sticks wit ya)

    It's on

Diana Ross: The Motown Anthology (4:51) . It's the same vocal with a more standard pop/ strings (?) arrangement . There's no BANJO!!!!

The liner notes say it was Remixed for the Thank God It's Friday soundtrack and then REMIXED AGAIN for the Ross LP. (tropical (palm tree) 1940s style-drawing of Miss Ross with a cigarette in hand, the smoking curling up to spell the "ross"). It's a minor LP, mostly leftovers from old recording seesions, as I recall. But I loved the Giorgio-style remix of "LLG".

This is the version on the 2nd cd of Diana: the Deluxe Edition. (5:12)

I don't know who added the Giorgio-esque syths...there's an arranger credited (seems like it said something like Paul Nelson???)...but Motown was always stingy with the "credits", weren't they? Anyhoo, seems like someone listened to Donna Summer's "Once Upon a Time" LP and got "inspired".

    Marky,

On the TGIF soundtrack, "Since You Came..." (oh why not?) clocks in at 4:39, so the 5:11 version on Diana Deluxe is an extended version of that mix. It's called an "LP Mix" on that CD. I do like the non-Giorgio-esque version as well; it has a tropical feeling to it, at least to my ears it did when they played it in the movie TGIF for only about 15 seconds.

On the subject of perhaps over-looked Miss Ross disco tunes, I also am partial to "I Ain't Been Licked", from The Boss. Lyrically, it's slightly reminiscent of "I Will Survive" but not as relevant. I do like Ashford & Simpson's background vocals on the tune. It's 5:16 on the deluxe CD and it reads "12-Inch Mix", but apparently, it wasn't released. Was this intended to be released as a 12", or was it a promo-only 12"?

Now that's funny cause I recall my TGIF vinyl soundtrack version of LLG was only like 3:30 or something according to the timing on the record. Did they add a different or longer version on later pressings? It was weird cause when I put the needle on the record band for cut #4 (LLG) it was still the previous song and then eventually the Ross song came on without the Giorgio-styled synths.

(In terms of "LP Mix"; I thought they were referring to the "Ross" LP. That has the 5:12 mix as does the 2nd cd of the Deluxe Edition of DIANA.)

In regards to TGIF has anyone else noticed that the bpms listed for nearly every track on that LP are wrong? Sometimes just a little off...but in the case of the D.C. LaRue song it's around 98 bpm and they say 114!!!!

In regards to "I Will Surivive"...I recall Motown shutting down Santa Monica Blvd. on a Sunday evening to film the video for that song. It was a.... (dare I say It?) GAY parade/float kinda theme. I never stayed long enough to see the actual shoot but I read that it did happen. This was supposed to be a big release for Miss Ross. Then a budding diva named Chantay Savage released a ballad version of the song and had a hit.....so Miss Ross was foiled again. Ross performed the song on Leno & Letterman and screwed up the lyrics (on Leno)-- sang the second verse twice (something like that)...but pulled it off. She was terrific on Letterman, especially, and looked great in a very chic little black dress and black heels with ribbons that wrapped around her legs. IS That TOO GAY!!!!!???? Just call me COJO HOMO. (think ET).

And I keep telling myself..."Marky, Don't SCARE THE STRAIGHT PEOPLE with too much GAY stuff" but once again, I've failed. :P

    Oh fiddle-de-de.

This is really interesting because on my TGIF vinyl, LLG starts out with a rather loud synth intro, as opposed to the one on Diana Deluxe, which takes a couple more seconds to build up on. I also notice that the intro is a few seconds shorter on TGIF than on the 5:12 version. I have two copies of the vinyl of TGIF and both versions are the same. Maybe you received the very first pressing of it.

On a similar note, on the CD version of "Saturday Night Fever", the original version of "Jive Talkin'" was used. On the vinyl of SNF that my mom had, it had the live version of it on there instead.

    Salsoul1975,

Yeah, I checked again last night. The LP version of "LLG" on the TGIF is 3:30 (not the REMIX). But the CD copy of TGIF has the shortened Giorgio-esque version. I'm guessing this was added to later pressings. I bought the record right when it was first released....so I guess it was altered later?

    Marky,

You're probably right on that one. My mom has Peaches & Herb's "2 Hot" LP and "Shake Your Groove Thing" clocks in around 5:35, perhaps (don't remember the exact time). It was a shortened version of the 12" version; only about 30 seconds maybe. All I know is that on my mom's copy, the ending of SYGT is abrupt, right after they sing "You can do it y'all" (paraphrasing). On the original 12" version, the music continues after they repeat that line. I had read somewhere a while ago that the original 12" version was on the 2 Hot LP, so I'm guessing that it was altered later on. Also, this dilemma: I have been searching for the version of SYGT which begins when they sing "There's nothing more that I'd like to do..." I cannot find this anywhere. I also heard that this version was also on the 2 Hot! LP when it was first released.

On Sunday, I listened to the Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell The Complete Duets double cd and was surprised to see that Miss Ross' "What You Gave Me' was a recylcled Marvin & Tammi tune.

The connection obviously is that Ashford & Simpson wrote & produced for both Marvin & Tammi & Miss Ross...so recycling of old material was commonplace.

Besides the obvious "Ain't No Moutain High Enough," Miss Ross recycled "You're All I Need To Get By, "You Ain't Living Until You're Loving" (with the Supremes on the "Love Child" LP) and "What You Gave Me" on her solo "Ross" LP.

My fave rediscovered/half-remembered gem from the Marvin & Tammi cd is "Keep On Lovin' Me Honey". Terrific track. :D
