ARTIST SPOTLIGHT #4 KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND

KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND was one of those artists that made very simple but with a very very catchy beat to hook you in and like their songs. They had simple and limited lyrics so that you catch onto them quickly...

I like a lot of their songs and still enjoy them as if they were new... my favorite cuts by them are:

    I'M YOUR BOOGIE MAN
    I LIKE TO DO IT
    GET DOWN TONIGHT
    KEEP IT COMIN' LOVE
    BOOGIE SHOES
    DO YOU WANNA GO PARTY
THAT'S THE WAY (I LIKE IT)

oh and by the way forum members.... if you don't like them or don't have something positive to say about them... you are welcome to rip them apart...

Well I never was a big KC fan, but of course they have their place in disco history. In fact, they're gonna perform live over here in a few weeks...I may go and check out the show! Wonder who's actually in the band nowadays :-?

best song by them I think...... Get Down Tonight
    There was life after disco!!

Ok, I'm going to rip them apart!!!

    No, I can't :D

How could you not like KC? Those Miami horny horns! A guy that has written and played so much classic disco. Maybe for some he was too poppy but his records are so uplifting.

I'm not goin' to repeat all the classics, I wanna save Bernie's webspace a little, but "Queen of clubs" is my favourite and even the slow one "Please don't go" and the Calypso-esque " Come to my Island" are regularly earfood for me.

"Boogie shoes" was a little dissapointing but the other stuff is vintage gold.

    Luv KC :)

KC was one of THE sounds of the Disco era.

I have a soft spot for the first record I ever saw from them Blow Your Whistle which on UK releases was credited to KC & the Sunshine Junkando Band (not Junkanoo as it should have been). Then, there was Sound Your Funky Horn from the very early days which had me singin' and hummin' along in the DJ booth. Both these first two singles could be described as primitive, but SYFH showed the sound to come.

Then it was hits all the way.

Although much berated, there's no denying That's The Way (I Like It) is one of the all time greats of the Disco era and even after all these years and probably a thousand listens I can still enjoy it. This has to be one of the most listened to records of all time. It's on a kazillion CD compilations of all types and gets palyed at gawd knows how many sporting events. Quite extraordinary!

One of my other faves is the much maligned I'm Your Boogie Man because of its simple yet understated groove. It swings hard. Something which a whole lorry load of Disco records failed to do.

Yep, they were uplifting and bought us a whole heap o' sunshine.

Bravo, KC & The Sunshine Band
