Cheryl Lynn's "Star Love" was for Diana Ross

"Star Love" (J.Footman & J. Weider) was for Diana Ross, but unknown Cheryl Lynn recorded it.

I posted that same link on another music forum that I belong to and being the Cheryl Lynn fan that I am, found it fascinating. Personally, I don't think that Diana Ross could've given 'Star Love' what Cheryl Lynn did. They would've really had to scale down that vocal arrangement to fit Miss Ross' vocal ummmmmm "talents".

There are recording "artists" and then there are real singers. Miss Ross is a very popular recording artist but Cheryl Lynn is a SINGER!

Mmmm...Miss Ross is a singer, just with a different vocal talent. I don't think it's fair to slag off her voice as much as people tend to. She's got her own style, not a soulful or earthy style...but it's a talent nonetheless.

Rick James wrote "I'm A Sucker For Your Love" for Miss Ross. When Motown wouldn't assign him an entire LP with the diva, he gave the song to his "discovery" Teena Marie.

"Star Love" was certainly more appropriate for Cheryl Lynn's fierce gospelly-take-me-to-the-nearest-church voice. Ross is more comfortable with the sexy, purring come-hither material. "Ooooooh Ooooooh Baby Love, my Baby Love".....

Still it would be interesting to hear what her version of these songs woulda sounded like. It's not too late Miss Ross!!! You need a new project. Put the bottle down. Why not record all the songs you "passed on" when you were in your prime???!!!!

The definition of Cheryl Lynn's voice: warm and exciting :)
I've found this link on google when I'm looking for some information about Toto & Cheryl Lyinn's '"Georgy Porgy" which was recorded in 1977, but relesead in 1978 :)

Great little story. I honestly can't see Ross doing this with the current arrangement. The power is not there.

Obviously, things went the way they were supposed to. Cheryl Lynn had a number 1 hit with "Star Love," and her debut album (which also featured the megahit "Got to Be Real") went gold very quickly

"Star Love" was a #1 hit???

    FrontPage22,

My eyebrows shot upwards when I read that little self-seving quote myself. "Got To Be Real" was #1 on the R&B chart. It was bundled with "Star Love" on the Disco chart peaking at #11. It is the flip side of the 12"...but let's face it, "GTBR" was the BIG HIT...."Star Love" peaked at #16 on the R&B chart and #62 on the Pop chart according to AMG.

Nevertheless, it is a good record....although usually no one can understand what's she's singing about-- "Star Love"??? We've had numerous requests here to decipher songs that turned out to be "Star Love".

As much as I enjoy "Star Love", the lyrics are just too corny for me (mentioning Jupiter in any song is enough for me tune out a little...). Sort of something I could see Miss Ross avoiding (THOUGH she did record "Work That Body" which features that awful line "every morning when we wake/to make up for that piece of cake/ we at last night :( ).

Now, "Shake It Up Tonight", there's a Cheryl Lynn classic!!!

Yeah, the lyrics of "Star Love" are kinda corny...but it does have that hyper-groove and those synthy hooks that make it fun on the dance floor. It's around 138 bpm-- so it's very high energy for a R&B record.

Miss Ross' "Work That Body" is one of the WORST things she ever recorded. After she signed with RCA, she envisioned herself an "artiste" and started trying to WRITE and PRODUCE her stuff. "VANITY KILLS CAREERS"!!! BAAAAD Move. She ain't no lyricist, that's fer shure. And some of the crap she did at RCA...that horrendous ROCK song that was the 3rd cut on side one of "Silk Electric" almost made my ears bleed.

ah.. you must be talking about "Fool For Your Love".. Diane doing her best Pat Benatar on that one.. I love it haha :) I gotta say as well "Work That Body" has a great groove!.. It's no match to her Motown stuff, but I must admit I have a soft spot for her vanity projects at RCA.. Sure, vanity killls careers, but it's great entertainment! (see Whitney's latest "career moves")

Ah but neonlights, I had hopes that Miss Ross would move gracefully into the later stages of her career...become a sorta classy Lena Horne-type figure. Not a punchline for drunk Diva jokes.

I have no doubt Miss Ross will redeem herself in the future.. Her well reported diva antics put me off to no end.. but I still like many of her records and I still admire her talent and all of her achievements.. After all what is a diva these days that hasn't survived substance abuse and/or a public meltdown.. After a well publicised mini-tour, a few TV specials and an autobiography she'll be past the punchlines - I'm sure.

:( I hope she can make a comeback of sorts. She has been one of the most successful female singers this side of Madonna (a career which has seen hits from the 60's onwards, a bevy of untouchable singles andf bonafide classics...)

That Divas Live Tribute showed how class she was (come on, like Mariah could've been an Emotion or Shirelle, much less a Supreme for a night is beyond me! Miss Ross showed her up big style!!!)

My misty watercolored memories of that TRAVESTY are PAINTED BLACK!!!    Miss Ross seemed soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo out of it and sang BADLY to boot!!!! Like she was high or sumpin' sumpin'. :o

That's all I recall.. I was embarrassed.

Yes, but the support was worse. Come on, Destiny's Child singing "Upside Down" was awful....

Yeah, but I wanted Miss Ross to really SHINE that night and she seemed to start songs and get lost and stop. I've never seen her so off in my life. Sometimes she's performing on auto-pilot--but the night of her DIVA TRIBUTE she seemed like the strung-out Billie Holiday, staggering outta the kitchen in "Lady Sings the Blues". I have to find my tape of that show and see if I'm being too cruel. :o

All I remember was I wanted it to be GOOD and it was real BAAAAAAD--even for that show which is usually BAAAAAAAD. (Except for the first tribute to ARETHA)

I have yet to see a re-broadcast of this year's show. I was in SF that weekend and missed it. I've looked for a repeat and never found one. Wanted to see Debbie Harry especially.

To each his own. Diana Ross is no match for Cheryl Lynn in the vocal department IMO but I do think that she can be effective with the right production.

'Star Love' is one of my least favorite Cheryl Lynn tunes but Cheryl gives it her all as usual. I prefer her singing R&B but as far as Disco goes 1979's 'Keep It Hot' is the one that does it for me. What a kick ass tune! It didn't get anywhere near the attention it deserved when it was originally released.

I've also always wondered about Judy Wieder's comment that 'Star Love' was a #1 hit. According to Joel Whitburn it was #16 R&B and #62 Pop in February of 1979. Does anyone know how it fared on the Disco/Dance chart? Maybe that's what she meant?

:-? I'm not sure why Diana's 'Work That Body' is so hated? It's got a hell of a groove, it's fun and campy and those background vocalists are singing their azz's off! It's an odd record because those session vocalists are mixed at the same level as Diana. I love it! I'll take 'Work That Body' ANY DAY over sickeningly saccharine and overblown fluff like 'Endless Love', 'Theme From Mahogany' and 'It's My Turn'!

Will someone who has Diana's "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" album please tell me who the background vocalists were on 'Work That Body'?

What's up E! Long time man! I've got your email address in my address book somewhere. I'll drop you and Jimmy a line soon. KB is the only one I've seen around in ages.

Thanks for the Disco chart info. Now I'm really confused. I'm not sure who the hell told Judy Wieder that 'Star Love' was a #1 hit! LOL. I notice that artists and writers tend to always fudge the facts a little and call medium sized hits "#1 hits". Maybe they're just referring to the Non-U.S. markets. :-?

    Rodd,

what's more fascinating was the peak position at #11 :-? Probably because there was so many many songs above them in the top 10 that were even better songs. We'll have to ask Marky to dig out that particular week to see what was higher....

I'm sorry Marky. I didn't notice that you had already posted all of the chart information for 'Star Love' before I did.

I thought that was odd as well E! 'Got To Be Real' was only a #11 hit? It's held up a hell of a lot better than most tunes that have made it to #1! That's for sure. I've heard it played in several movies and commercials over the last few years. There's even a brand new remake on some movie soundtrack with "The Queen Of Hip-Hop Soul" Mary J. Blige attempting to fill in for Cheryl. Ha! Please excuse me while I go vomit violently now!

Rock It by Lipps Inc always seemed directly inspired by (lifted from) Star Love, with an I Feel Love synth solo thrown in.

I'll never forget when I first heard Cheryl Lynn's debut album. The electricity she put into both "Real" AND "Star Love"(especially at the end where it sounds like she's having a vocal fight with those horns) made my eyes get big. I couldn't believe how much confidence she had on her DEBUT album. Add other great songs like "All My Lovin'", "Instant Love", "If This World Were Mine", "Believe in Me", "Encore" and others, and I STILL don't understand she's not a major star today. As big a fan as I am of Diana Ross, I could no more imagine her doing "Star Love" as I could imagine her doing some of Aretha's best known songs. She's far more restrained a singer. But I'm VERY fond of an obscure song she did called "Touch by Touch" on her album "Swept Away". Check it out if you get the chance...
