What Disco songs are you listening to right now?

Opted for staying in today and listened to music - all day. My son has catalogued nearly every piece of music we own onto the computer "Winamp". My play list went something like this (I shan't list all since it would be toooo long):

First Choice - "Let No Man Put Assunder"
    - "Dr Love" (I love the energy in this track)
    - "Love Thang"

Gregg Diamond & Bionic Boogie - "Cream always rises to the top"

Labi Saffre - "I Got the Blues" (hauntingly beautiful - Eminem sampled this for "My Name Is" or whatever its called)

    Jaheim - "Fabulous"

    O'Jays - "Backstabbers"

    Rick James - "Superfreak"
    - "Mary Jane"

    Salsoul - "Nice & Nasty"
    - "Love is the message"
    - "Salsoul Hustle"

Silver Convention - "Fly Robin Fly"

T-Connection - "Do what you wanna do"

Temptations - "Papa was a rolling stone" (way ahead of its time when it came out)

Machine - "There but for the grace of God"

    Odyssey - "Native New Yorker"
    - "Back to my roots"
    - "Don't tell me tell her"
    - "Inside Out" (oooh I luv this)

People's Choice - "Do it anyway you wanna"

Sylvester - "You make me feel"

Sylvia Striplin - "You can't turn me away" (this is so lovely)

Masters at Work - "MAW Expensive" (how beautiful is this)

    - Billy Frazier: "Billy Who"

Well, I have an ADSL connection since 2 days ago and right now I'm in a downloading frenzy (sorry Bernie  ). A rainy week also helped to keep me at home. I was listening to old rock oldies (doing Rolling Stones-Rod Stewart comps) and I just listened to two Curtis Mayfield albums: "Roots" (1971) and the superb "Live" (1971). Also have "Faces" (EWF) to listen to. It's nice 8)
BTW, I listened to some long jams like "Get on the funk train" (Munich Machine), "Evolution" (Giorgio Moroder) and "Love in C minor" (Cerrone).

Gypsy Lane - Predictions LP. Excellent funk album. Most shocking is that it was produced by Jacques Morali.

I threw together a tape the other night that I'm playing now...

REFLECTIONS - Diana Ross & the Supremes (CLASSIC!!! I was soooo excited that Motown was going sorta "psychedelic" in their arrangement!! Tooo Coool!!!)

I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE - Marvin Gaye] (Just the BEST!!! Haunting and although not the first version...the Definitive Primal One!!!)

LOVE CHILD - Diana Ross & the Supremes (CLASSIC SINGLE!!... seems to move with such a fierce sweeping sensation...but it's actually really quite slow...just around 104 bpms!!!...Bless the FUNK BROTHERS for their musical genius!!!)

JIVE TALKIN' - The Bee Gees (this single just captivates me....the production by Arif Mardin propelled them back to the top of the charts at a time they were considered "dead meat". Many consider this pop fodder...it makes me wanna dance!!!!!!!!)

RUBBERBAND MAN - The Spinners (thanks to that terrific new Office Max commercial, I hauled this out: Phillipe Wynne was one of the great singers!!!!!! Silly song...wonderful production & especially VOCAL!!!) :D :D :D

THREE WAY LOVE AFFAIR - Elton John (working with Thom Bell...the CD of the entire Thom Bell Sessions is one of my current faves!!! How come I igged this for years????   )

ARE YOU READY FOR LOVE - The Spinners ( recorded after Phillipe Wynne left the group( I think)...Elton's version with Phillipe singing along is VASTLY SUPERIOR..but this is still Thom Bell & The Spinners!!!)

TAKE IT FROM ME - Dionne Warwick(e) (I totally missed this one and never even thought to pick up this LP since I already had "Then Came You" on a Spinners compilation. Nice one, Dionne. Don't know why she never wanted to dance again.)

FULL TIME THING (BETWEEN DUSK AND DAWN) - Whirwind (Totally missed this the first time around too. Found it on a Roulette compilation. Just perfect for me. Great hooks, melody and vocals.)

THREE STEPS FROM TRUE LOVE - the Reflections (I remember this song from back in tha day...but didn't know who did it. I have the 1980s cover version by Margaret Ryenolds. Found the LP at Amoeba last week. Just my style.)

NICE AND SLOW - Elton John (from the Thom Bell sessions...a more traditional EJ song given a classy Thom Bell arrangement. Thom Bell is a musical GENIUS!!!)

I'M DOIN' FINE NOW - New York City (Another Thom Bell creation that I've loved since the early 1970s. Couldn't recall who did it til I found it one one of those Rhino "Didn't It Blow Your Mind" cd compilations. They don't make 'em any finer than this. I had the 1980s remake by The Pasadenas before I found the orignal. Ain't nothin like the REAL THING!!!)

ONE NIGHT AFFAIR - Jerry Butler (Gamble & Huff production sometimes mentioned among the early disco prototype records. Esther Phillips did a more "disco" cover later on.)

SCORPIO - Dennis Coffey (Just room on side one for a little instrumental to close out the tape.)

Side 2 later...I gots ta go.

Hey Marky, I downloaded recently the three songs of that 1979 Elton John single. Frankly, I didn't think too much of them, even as I knew Thom Bell was behind them. Maybe I have to spin them again...
The 3 songs I have are "Three way love affair", "Mama can't buy you love" and "Are you ready for love". What about that other sessions? Must be a new CD you have.
It's time to give Thom Bell his own CD box retrospective á la Phil Spector, huh? In case he didn't have one. 8)

Well, I'm in the process of transferring records to tape to cd. I'm listening to:

    Sugar Pie Guy
I'd Rather Spend a Bad Time With You
    Instinctual
    Secret Rendzevous (White House Remix)
    This Must Be Heaven
    Glamorous Life
    You Used To Hold Me

and more to name a few. In addition, I'm also listening to It's My Life and a Latin Jazz cd compilation.
As a side note, I am using Blaze Audio for my transfers and I am very pleased with it's performance and ease of use. 8)
    Find them and destroy them!

Among others, these are some tracks I listened to this evening on an old live DJ tape of mine:

Surface - Falling in Love A biggie in the UK. Soulful funky disco with a sorta 'Forget Me Nots' single piccicato type of sound on every beat. Yeah, it was obvious to mix the two and I did.
O'Jays - Put Our Heads Together One of their best ever for my money. The venerable O'Jays with what was an up to the minute funky, bass synth driven, uplifting song. Really liked this record BITD. Should have been bigger than it was.
Jazzy D - Get On Up This was the type of record that kept me happy as a DJ. Good funky sound, happy lyrics.
Crown Heights Affair - Rock The World Again, one of their best IMO, but not to be seen on CD, so far as I know.
Patrick Gammon - Do My Ditty Can't tell you anything about this record, except it used to go down fairly well.
Lady M - Please Don't Break My Heart Quite an endearing soulful disco record that I probably didn't play enough. To be perfectly honest, I'd entirely forgotten this record.
Tom Browne - Rockin' Radio I really liked this record, as at the time, it was a tad different, especially for Tom Browne. Solid enough without being spectacular.
Sharon redd - Beat The Street (instr) A true classic and soooo damned hard 'n' funky.

    - Foxy: "Mademoiselle" Less-known then "Get off" but a great record!

    - ORS: "Moonboots" Mmmmh-boots!

    - Bigfoot: "Watch your step" Sounds like a Disco-TV-tune

    - La Pregunta: "Shangri-La" Ooh-ah Shangri-La

    - Rare Pleasure: "Let me down easy" David Morales likes this one too :D

    - Was (Not Was): "Wheel me out" So Bizarre-so good

    - James Brown: "Stone to the bone" Oh yeah

    - Charles Earland: "Coming to you live" Jazzy goody

Right now I'm listening to Miss Ross' Diana CD. "Friend To Friend" is on right now. I just started playing the CD, but I also like the original "Chic" version with the bass overlays.

A couple of big tracks for me this week:

Esther Phillips - I'll Be Your Pleasure - finally managed to get my hands on that one! :D A big singalong disco favourite!

Lonnie Liston Smith - Journey Into Love - another one I picked up recently. Absolutely love his dreamy mystical jazzy style ....

Recently, thanks to the influence of our very own Z-man, Zeca, I've been listening to a lot of Sixties Soul and Jazz - including, amongst others, some Jackie Wilson, Garnet Mimms, Garland Green, Nancy Wilson, Georgie Fame .....

BTW Videoskoooter - I happen to have brought a CD into work with that Rare Pleasure track you mentioned. Time to give it a spin, m'thinks..... According to the sleeve notes, it was big at the Blackpool Mecca .....

    :)

We don't just stick a record in around here and let it play.

My wife's watching the TV in my home office. Complains that it's lonely downstairs where the wide-screen is. Cued into the Hard-Drive thingamajig attached to the PC and the stereo system is just a bunch of songs off of new records that I loaded into it. I'm about tired now of watching "Lifetime" ("television for women")

Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) - Billy Joel

Now wifey's nonplussed - she says "Can't you play that downstairs?" -- push the button, speakers downstairs start to play

    Indian Giver - First Choice
    Victim - Candi Staton
Do Ya Wanna Funk - Sylvester (Live Version from "Living Proof"
Come Rain or Come Shine - B.B. King and Eric Clapton
Come Rain or Come Shine - Judy Garland
Come Rain or Come Shine - Frank Sinatra
Come Rain or Come Shine - Myself and The Bill Holloman Quartet
Come Rain or Come Shine - Billie Holiday

Now I go upstairs and realize I made a mistake and the damn CD Computer thing's gonna keep playin' Come Rain or Come Shine until it runs out of titles like that, then it'll probably play "Come on a' My House" by Rosie Clooney or "It's Raining Men" by the Weather Girls -- so f*cking much for technology. Now, I want to go to bed, but the maid has awakened and walks all the way across the house and says in her broken English (she's Chinese) "You play the time you sing with band. I love when you sing with band. Can you play more when you sing with band? I hand her the CD with myself, and "Big" Al Wilson, Ordell McCoy, Sam Kimble, Theresa Wright, Brad Rickert, and "The Distinguished Gentlemen," (who were neither) from my last birthday party and go upstairs.

"Honey, how do I make it play that lady that I like?" - wifey's wide awake.
"Just type in Barbra S and click on Search and Play"

I am awakened the next morning to my wife, and the maid, and my wife's sister, discoing down in my office, right next to my bedroom, to:

Enough is Enough - Barbara Streisand
How do You Keep The Music Playing? - Barbara Streisand (from her latest - "The Movie Album" - and not bad; she uses an enormous amount of restraint) - by now all three women are engaged in this big enormous hug and trying to find Kleenex. And my coffee's not yet made.
Moon River - Barbara Streisand (also "Movie Album")

**** Technology. I got in the car and went out for breakfast. When I got back, somehow, my wife had loaded a CD with the maid's Chinese romantic music into my computer and really, really screwed it up. How can I delete selections when I can't type in Chinese? Oh, my God!! If I give you my address will you come over here and shoot me. I have a loaded 9mm that's very accurate -- a piece of cake -- just put me out of my misery.

    Just kidding.
