A good funky set ... My fave from your list is the BAR-KAYS track ... And PLEASURE!!! Hope a good night was had by all!!

A couple of those I haven't heard of. Could you give me some info on GERSON "KING" COMBO - MANDAMENTOS BLACK and GANG DO TAGARELA - MELÔ DO TAGARELA
    instrumental) ?

Funnily enough I heard that DUNN & BRUCE STREET - SHOUT FOR JOY on the radio last week (And I recorded it on my minidisc!) That is a really fine track ... I'm really getting into that one at the moment.

If it moves - funk it!!

    Blaxman:

I was looking forward to your playlist and I must say, great stuff here. 'Walking into Sunshine' by Central Line is an absolute fave of mine; Many memories with this one as it reminds me so much of my college days. Also, Instant Funk and Jimmy 'Bo' Horne are also big in my collection. Sounded like a great party; Wish I could have been there to check it out. I too am unfamiliar with the two tracks Jazz mentioned. Can you give some more info on these as I am interested in knowing a little more background on them. Once again, great set. Let me see what I can come up with this Friday. By the way, thanks for throwing some Pleasure in there for me.

Jazz and Sammy, you can be sure, was a great night there, big crowd (120 people in a small club) , great 70's atmosfere. Perfect!!

Let me explain the "SENHORES DO GROOVE" party "rules". (from now on I'll call just "SG" ok?)

We are 7 record collectors from the 70's, and we use to promote public meetings to share & trade records, CD's, memories, etc...
This party/meetings gained some attention on the local radios, tv and newspapers last two years but we make just two or three meeting by year. In this meetings we prefer to play our "not so mainstream" fave tracks and we MUST (yes, MUST, it's the rules) play at least one obscure track on the set. That's the case of "GANG DO TAGARELA" track of my set. This way we share the obscure tracks, on the party!

Every SG member have his own "specialty", 60/70's soul/r&b, 70/80's funk (my case), philly, disco-funk, eurodisco and house.

Well, about the tracks you like.

    - GERSON "KING" COMBO: Is a kind of "brazilian James Brown", he recorded two albuns in the 70's, the track "Mandamentos Black" is from 77 (great funk track!!!)It's available on Audiogalaxy. The lyrics....well...it's in portuguese, is all about "commandments from the black people", like the bible commandments, you know.

    - GANG DO TAGARELA: It's a really obscure brazilian track, it's an early 80's instrumental version from "GOOD TIMES/RAPPERS DELIGHT" from CHIC/SUGARHILL GANG, with no lyrics but, several small solo works from guitar, bass, horns. This track really was the smash hit of the party !!!
And better.....It's available on Audiogalaxy !! It's available on a British CD compilation called "Black Rio". BTW, "tagarela" in portuguese means.....hmmm.....
somebody who talks too much....like the rappers in "Rappers Delight", got it?
"MELÔ" is a shortened form to melody.

Well, I think is enough to my poor english knowledgment, if you had patience to read this until the end, sorry and thanks.

    Peace,

    Blaxman

P.S. If you hear tha songs, let me know your impressions, ok?

    Blaxman:

Thanks for the info on the tracks. The idea of Brazilian funk sounds interesting and definitely something I'm going to check out.

    Ru:

Mass Production was a very underrated funk band from the '70's. I have at least four LP's, possibly five, that are all very good. I'm not at home right now so I can't give an accurate account of the number of LP's or the great tracks on each which I'll know once I look at the albums. I'll do that once I get home. Great discovery.

By the way, the idea of getting together with other collectors for trading and sharing music a few times a year sounds great. The closest thing I have to that is attending record conventions throughout the year where vendors sell hard to find classics. Your venture sounds alot more fun.

Sammy, in fact all of us are close friends and we dinning frequently at each other houses. The parties/meetings are to gather all of us at same time (and place), what is not so easy because the lack of time, you know, the real life is tough! About the parties, we use to say: "We play for ourselves", the attendants just be at the right place at right time. We are not professional DJ's. That's why we dont play so much mainstream songs. We play what we like and the open-minded attendants like it. At least the most part of them, thank God!

And of course, it's very very fun. Its a real "pleasure".

    Take care,

    Blaxman

Thanx for the info, Blax. I shall be looking out for those in the future.

I haven't got a lot of Brazilian funk as such - my faves are Azymuth "Outburo" and Tania Maria "Come With Me" from my collection but I have a lot of latin-influenced disco and funk (I REALLY love the music ..). I made a tape of some of the latin stuff from my collection for someone a few months back, and it was such fun that I made myself a Minidisc entitled "Latin stuff - part One" - with artists like Willie Colon, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Cedar Walton, Sergio Mandes. Good listening for sunny days

Talking about Mass Production, I have a couple of Mass Production LPs, both picked up in Germany, I remember, for peanuts ....
around $1 - $2 in the 80's. My fave is "Cosmic Lust" ...

Yeah, and I like the idea of reunions - we have one reunion a year in Central London and it is good to talk about those times Way Back When ...
If it moves - funk it!!

Jazz, "Shout For Joy" was (also or originally) recorded by the group called "REVELATION". REVELATION's version is more "joyous", better produced. I played the DUNN & BRUCE's version (I like it, of course) because it was more convenient to the set (more "rare groove" style at that moment).

I you dont know Revelation's version, try it.I think you'll like it.

    Jazz,

I like "Azymuth" so much, saddly they are more famous outside than in Brazil.

Saddly, "Mass Production" stuff is pretty rare in Brazil, everything I have is some tracks from some compilations or downloaded tracks from AG. However, I can see they are a good band, I really like one 80's instrumental track called "BOOP", it's very similar to the some BAR-KAYS synth-driven track from the same era, wich is "BACKSEAT DRIVER".

And finally, I was wondering. How would be a "discomusic.com" forum members meeting!?!?....OK......just a delyrium!!

    Peace,

    Well guys,
I was a DJ on that party too and my selection was far away from the funky stuff BLAXMAN played. Here's the set list:

    - PHYLLIS HYMAN: UNDER YOUR SPELL
    - MARY J BLIGE: FAMILY AFFAIR
    - EN VOGUE: MY LOVIN'
    - WHITNEY HOUSTON: STEP BY STEP
    - JANET JACKSON: TOGETHER AGAIN
    - DIANA ROSS: NOT OVER YOU YET
    - NATALIE COLE: LIVIN' FOR LOVE

At the very end of the party, when most of the people were gone, I played some slow songs like INVISIBLE by ALISON MOYET and... MANHÃS DE SETEMBRO, by VANUSA! Who the hell is VANUSA? Well, she is a brazilian pop singer that appeared in the late 60's and, among other things, made a very funny cover of I WILL SURVIVE with lyrics translated to portuguese! Wild stuff indeed!

Hey friends from "discomusic forums", finally I can say welcome to Zeca Azevedo, he's a good friend of mine and another "Senhores do Groove" member.

Sammy and Jazz, you both can see. The guy has great taste, like both of you. And better, his english is much better than mine.

    Welcome, Zeca!

Well Blaxman you were right. I definitely dig Zeca's playlist. Especially 'Under your spell' by Phyllis Hyman. I love Phyllis Hyman and I love that song which doesn't get the recognition because it was on the same LP with 'You know how to love me' which I also love. Also, Zeca I love Janet Jackson so you had me hooked there. It appears you are partial to female singers, am I right in that assumption? If so, how do you feel about Angela Bofill who is my all-time favorite female singer. By the way, I checked out your website and the pictures of the party. Wish I was there as it looked like alot of fun. Even though the text was in Portugese I could translate most of it because of the similarities to the spanish language which I am fluent in. Zeca and Blax you guys have a great thing going with Senshores de Groove; Maybe I can be a long distance honorary member (Haha...Smile). Anyway, I play the happy hour tonight so let me see what memories I can stir with this week's playlist. Stay tuned!

By the way Jazz, in response to some other Mass Production LP's and or songs you may want to check out:

"Three miles high" featuring a slammin' funk jam entitled 'Just wanna make my dreams come true'.

"Masterpiece" featuring two tracks entitled 'Angel' and 'Nature lover'.

Then their is the LP released between these two, the name escpaes me, but it featured their most popular and succesful track 'Firecracker'. I think I'll feature some Mass Production in this week's happy hour.

Sorry I didn't get back to you guys earlier, but it's been kinda busy at work today. We've got a long weekend in England  due to the good ol' Queen !!! And I was watching France v Senegal... What a result!
    Anyway, here I am..

First of all, Blax, it's nice to see your friends online! Welcome along, Zeca!! Any friend of Blax is a friend of mine!! And of course, I agree with Sammy - definitely got good taste!!

I remember that Phyllis Hyman record "Under Your Spell". I first heard it on my favourite soul radio show - I remember that because it was the first new record I heard in the 1980's and I recall thinking: "Wow! The 1980's!! Soul music still alive in the '80's! We're really moving on!!"

I had a look at your website - marvellous. You lot certainly know how to have a good time!! I would love to have been there as well !! Nice to know that THE MUSIC is alive and well in the land of THE COPACABANA!!

Can I be your second honorary member?? PLEASE??? And I'll tell you what, Blax and Sammy, IN RETURN - you would have certainly fitted in very nicely with my friends in the JAZZ PILGRIMS back in the Seventies. With your knowledge of the music and obvious partying know-how... Consider yourself honorary JAZZ PILGRIMS!!!!!!

Sammy, thanks for your excellent advice re the "missing" Mass Production LPs. Question for you - when they turned up in the Seventies, did people say "Huh! They're just a copy of Brass Construction!" ?? But I think you are right - they are certailnly underrated and a fine group in their own right! I get the feeling that's what people thought of them ..

I am actually making a list of all your recommendations. Man, I'm gonna be broke!!!

Hey, Blax, - if you have a minidisc player - I'll put the 2 Lps that I have on MD and send them to you - let me know. That will cheer you up!!

TGIF!! Y-E-A-H-H-H!! Especially as we have a long weekend !!!

Well, bye for now! Off to continue the Friday nite party!!!

PS Do you think Bernie should give us our own section??? (ENGLISH SENSE OF HUMOUR)
If it moves - funk it!!

    Hi friends,

it's an honor for me to be a part of this forum about music. This is a lovely way to make some new friends. Music is universal, for sure - see how many people around the world are sending posts to this forum. It's great to be a part of this "family".

SAMMY and JAZZ, you're welcome to join our group and to play on our parties. I know BRASIL is far away form where you live, but hey, who knows?, someday you can be here with us, visiting our country. My dear friend BLAXMAN (who told me about this wonderful site and forum) described our group and our activities very well. In the last 3 years, I made some REAL friends simply because we all love music. The 7 guys of the group are some of the best friends I have today, and I'm sure that our friendship will last, as much as our outstanding love for music.

About my set list: I love all the songs I played that night, but I'm more a SOUL DJ than a DISCO DJ. I grew up listening to SOUL, FUNK, DISCO, ROCK and BRAZILIAN POPULAR MUSIC and all these musical genres are important to me, but my favorite is SOUL MUSIC. I LOVE and I LIVE classic SOUL MUSIC everyday. I'm into 60' and 70's MOTOWN, STAX/VOLT, HOT WAX/INVICTUS,HI RECORDS, PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL, BLAXPLOITATION soundtracks and 60's and 70's funk (JAMES BROWN and his disciples). What I dig about DISCO: I love BLACK DISCO MUSIC. I enjoy some of the EURODISCO stuff, but is not my preference. Anyway, I played those songs on the party just to surprise my friends (you should see BLAXMAN's face when I began to play!). Well, I had lots of fun, as always.

About MASS PRODUCTION: SAMMY, I have the album you missed: it is called IN THE PUREST FORM and here's the song list:
    SIDE ONE
    - FIRECRACKER
    - LOVE YOU
    - WITH PLEASURE
    - OUR THOUGHT (PURITY)

    SIDE TWO
    - CAN'T YOU SEE I'M FIRED UP
    - EYEBALLIN'
    - NEXT YEAR
    - STROLLIN'

It is the only MASS PRODUCTION album I possess and I like it veeery much. It's pure funk music for funk fans like myself and my friend BLAXMAN, and you, of course.

Thank you friends. Let's keep in touch.
    Peace (paz)

Dear friend Jazz, as said by Zeca, you're welcome to our "brotherhood".

I'm very proud to be a Jazz_Pilgrim too!!! It's my first international prize!!

Bernie give to us an entire section?
    Lovely idea!!!!

Jazz.......I really apreciate the MD offer. I'm very touched, very kind idea! But, saddly, I dont have MD player (in Brazil this one is not much popular equipment)

Anyway, I have a CD home recorder and I can make some CD's for you, it would be my pleasure. Just e-mail me to gimme the adress and if you prefer, your phone number. We can try (I said TRY) to talk about it.

    Take care friend,

    Blaxman
