    Hey OCB, :D

One's a remix of the same song released a couple years later. First came "I Gotta Keep Dancin" on Soul Train in 1977; then it was remixed and retitled "Keep Smiling" on Solar in 1980; Both records hit the Billboard Disco Top 10.

Hey Guys, While you're on the subject.
Gotta keep dancin was released on Soul Train
as Carrie Lucas, and also on another label
as Carrie !! - can't recall the label at the moment.
Have seen both labels on ebay not so long back.

But wait, On the Solar disco classics CD (UK ?) the version is longer than I think BOTH 12" ??????
CD version clocks in at over 6 mins. odd - 12" are around 5 mins odd.

    *****

I just came across this and I think its sort of a noteworthy "WOW" in the disco story ....

the same song * by the same artist makes it into the Disco Top 10 ... twice ??

Maybe DISCO INFERNO does this too (???) ......( any others??)

About KEEP SMILIN' s return ....I don't recall commenting at the time ...."what?? This song ....again???"

So I believe I remember it from its' first time out .....and maybe wasn't paying much attn. the second time around .

The Whispers are credited as back-up .... are they distinguishable .... doesn't seem like it on the initial release ???

    ******

    * and ........ same song ,yes ..... yet with a different title !!! :icon_mrgreen::icon_eek: I wonder who thought to do this and why .....and my .....how pleased they must have been with the results !!!!:icon_mrgreen::icon_mrgreen:

hey and look at how the SOULTRAIN label logo sensibly melded into the SOLAR label

sort of like solving a scramble board puzzle ..... sort of .....

One of my favorite Disco tracks..One of my favorite musical Intro's..
And the first Disco Album I ever bought...I bought that and the 45 of Barry White's Ecstasy..at K-MART:icon_eek:..I'll never forget because the check out girl was black and hip looking and she looked up at this blonde teenager and said "You have some good taste in music"..I was beaming with pride that that older hip woman praised my taste in music:icon_biggrin:

LOL ! I know how that feels (sorta) --- was at a company Christmas party once, and they were playing great 70s/80s faves, and one of the hired bartenders noted to me that I was the only one out there on the floor with any rhythm. I felt 10 feet tall, which is just about doubling my current height.

. . . and that Carrie Lucas tune ALWAYS brings a smile to my face

Keep smilin' is also in my top 10 of all time.
I was never aware of it the first time around - so I was more than happy that SOLAR re-released it.A song that good deserves a 2nd shot for sure.

Keep Smilin- 6/14/80 NUMBER TEN (#74) (b-side of It's Not What You Got)

    Thanks Donald !

I remember I GOTTA KEEP DANCIN' being big .....didn't remember it being that big (#2) ...but certainly most deserving ....

so its second time around it was as the "B" side to IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT .....I vaguely remember that one .. ...is INWYG then the song responsible for carrying this record into the TOP 10 ... :icon_confused:.. and KEEP DANCIN' just more or less went along for the ride ... or was it due to DJ's flipping it and once again playing IGKD aka KS in heavy rotation ???

    remmy,

Joel Whitburn's Disco book lists the second version like this:

KEEP SMILIN'/ IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT (It's How You Use It)/ CAREER GIRL (from the album Portrait of Carrie) (charts for 42 weeks!!!)

But looking at the actual first chart from 6/14/80:

KEEP SMILIN' debuted @ #62 as a12-inch--it moves up the chart, peaking at #17 on it's own, then falls down to #86...then a 2nd 12-inch is released that bundles IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT/ KEEP SMILIN as A-side/B-side and that 12-inch starts to move back up the chart---on 11/15/80--it peaks as IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT (IT'S HOW YOU USE IT)/ KEEP SMILIN' at #10....but the very next week KEEP SMILIN' is dropped & CAREER GIRL is bundled with IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT. So complicated, isn't it? At the beginning of 1981, it becomes CAREER GIRL/IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT still charting @ #13!!!

On the Soul chart, IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT is the A-side and KEEP SMILIN' is the B-side.

Trocadero played KEEP SMILIN' all the time....don't you remember?

But that is how the 12" was released.

    1st release
A-SIDE: Keep Smilin' b/w I'm Gonna Make You Happy

    2nd release
A-SIDE: It's Not What You Got, It's How You Use It b/w Keep Smilin'

<deeeeep sigh> I didn't know about the prior release of 'Keep Smilin'".
I discovered it when my record pool got service with "It's Not What You Got...".
Both sides are recordings that, effortlessly, take me to a specific time and place, everytime I hear them...

I think I would consider them 2 separate records, wouldn't you?

    1) I Gotta Keep Dancing (1977 original version)
    2) Keep Smilin' (a remixed 1980 version with a new title)

    hmmmmm????

hmmm....I have the original 1977 12-inch By Carrie and the first version stepehn mentioned of Keep Smilin' b/w I'm Gonna Make You Happy--it says 1977 on the Keep Smilin' side and 1979 on the other. :icon_eek:

But they did change the title, didn't they?--maybe it would merit an *asterisk on I Gotta Keep Dancin' (*later remixed and released as Keep Smilin')....maybe?

"I Gotta Keep Dancing" is hands down one of my favorite songs, and was HUGE in the clubs I went to. The "other" (remixed) version strips it down to bare essentials and takes all of the life out of it, to my ears. The drum breaks in the original version are so punchy, the remixed version drum breaks are muted in comparison. Everything about the remixed version seems to be a bit less dramatic.

BITD it was "It's Not What You Got" that was the hit where I danced, "Keep Smilin" was played but not for long, we all knew and loved the original version and the remix seemed redundant.

Marky, Remicks, IMO, I consider it the same song, not 2 separate songs.

    Re: Carrie Lucas

Unidisc put out a Carrie Luca's Greatest Hits cd a number of years ago that has the same cover art as the "Portrait Of Carrie" LP. It features both versions of "I Gotta Keep Dancin' (Keep Smiling).

Btw, did "Career Girl" get a lot of club play? It's only about 110 bpm and would probably be played either early in the evening or in a morning set.

Personally, I find Carrie's vocals a little weak.

I always loved "It's Not What You Got" as it was played quite a bit at a club I use to frequent. I know its a little 'bubblegummie" but its one of my favourites by Carrie.

Thanks for the input, TDK. I am going to pull the two versions and give them a comparative spin!
