LaToya Jackson "If You Feel The Funk"

    :o

I was reading on the site about those French "Funky Collector" CD's when this title jumped out at me. So, being the cheapo that I am, I WinMX'd it and was floored. How good is this cut??? I wish they'd given it to a perhaps more competent vocalist but still, great late disco/early 80's r'n'b-ish cut. Sounds fresher than Janet's dubious 1982 stab at disco.

There's a lot of well-known musicians behind that LP; even Stevie Wonder plays in one track. Look at the album's credits and you'll be surprised.
Obviously it was a case of "hey, Michael's little sister wants to make a record, let's give her a hand" :) Still it's quite OK. I remember two other tracks from the LP, "Are you ready" and "Stay the night".

I remember when this record came out, I think around the spring of 1980. Imagine the lyrics, "If you feel the funk, shake your rump." This one sounded like Latoya might have written it all by herself. Nevertheless, was a good dance tune.

It's a very uplifting dancetune! She could have been big when she had chosen the right people to work with. Not that she is a great vocalist, but that didn't stop Paula Abdul and sister janet.

She had another huge clubhit "Oops-oh-no", together with Cerrone but after that one all came to an end. But... she's working under a different name now "Toy" and is recording again so who knows, maybe a come-back??

Bobby, I totally agree! 'If You Feel The Funk' is one of LaToya's best but 'Bet Cha Gonna Need My Lovin' is the one that really does it for me! She's also got an excellent mid-tempo track called 'Camp Kuchi Kaiai' off of her "My Special Love" album from 1981. Now LaToya is by now means a Martha Wash but with top notch production you hardly notice her lackluster vocals and the track's got a hell of a groove!

FrontPage, are you referring to Janet's 1982 hit 'Young Love'? "Dubious"? It's the best damn song she's ever recorded IMO! LOL. Never again has Janet given as fiery and sassy a vocal performance as she did on 'Young Love'! And that backing track is excellent. Janet (like LaToya) is not a good singer but by her standards she sang her azz off on 'Young Love'. I love it! To each his own.

:o Yes, I refer to "Young Love". Now, don't get me wrong, it's a fun tune but I think it's fluff and it was 3 years out of sync with what was going on with music at the time. She needed a funkier, more r'n'b edge to her music. Instead she got "Off The Wall" clones and discolite pop. Some songs on her debut like "Don't Mess Up This Good Thing" were a little tighter. I just think it was sort of doomed to go tits up as it was not current enough for 1982. Even in 1980, "Young Love" might have been a bigger hit.

You've got a point. It's a great tune but it just doesn't have a 1982 sound. I missed 'Young Love' the first time around and didn't discover it until the 90's. I remember being shocked that it was released in 1982. It's got that same sound that Stacy Lattisaw was hitting the charts with in early 1980! I was also taken aback by the cutesy-wutsy Pop tone of the whole album. 'Young Love' is the only song with any pizzazz and it sticks out like a sore thumb. She definitely should've went with more of a danceable R&B sound since that was what was hitting the charts at the time. Pop fluff like her second single 'Come Give Your Love To Me' just didn't cut it.
