    Hi Video,

yeah, great topic. PRINCE has made lots [and still do - MUSICOLOGY is a fine album indeed] of great singles and albums over the years. Here's my choices:

    1. PURPLE RAIN - still his best album, it is his most accessible and melodic, but full of inventivity, lust, passion and great songs. There is not a track on the record that can be called filler. Best tracks: PURPLE RAIN [majestic ballad, still moves me today just like the very first time I heard it], LET'S GO CRAZY and, of course, WHEN DOVES CRY [genial pice of funk-pop]

    2. 1999 - still my 2nd favorite album by the purple guy. In fact, this is a transitional album, in which PRINCE delivers some of his funkiest tracks, but develops his pop side as well. Stand-out tracks: 1999, LITTLE RED CORVETTE, LADY CAB DRIVER [ultra-funky and nasty], FREE nad the lusty INTERNATIONAL LOVER

    3. Oughta be SIGN OF THE TIMES, a double album that marks a high point in PRINCE's career [maybe the highest point of success and criativity he ever achieved]. Full of anthological songs, this marvelous record still contains some filler [IT'S GONNA BE A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT is funky but pointless, at least for me] and the second record is better than the first. Not in the same level as masterpieces like SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, but it is an amazing record anyway. Best tracks: the incredible title track and IF I WAS YOUR GIRLFRIEND, his best recordings EVER [2 tracks that shows his genius as a pop composer and recording artist], but there's more: THE CROSS, IT, U GOT THE LOOK, ADORE nad I COULD NEVER TAKE THE PLACE...

    4. AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY - there's some ups and downs here, but the "ups" are really up there with the best pop music ever made. If you like PRINCE the funkster, well, this one's not for you, since is one of his poppies efforts, with touches of psychedelia here and there. Stand-out tracks: RASPBERRY BERET [who can forget those lines. "She wore a raspberry beret/the kind u find on a second-hand store/raspberry beret/and if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more"], POP LIFE [one of my favorite PRINCE songs], THE LADDER [beautiful ballad with gospel tones], PAISLEY PARK and the crazy TEMPTATION [in this record PRINCE talks to GOD and GOD... talks to him! The message? Love is more important than sex. OK, right ]

    5. DIRTY MIND - another 5 star record from PRINCE, this one opened up his dirty mind to the world and brings his most explicit lyrics to date. Great funky sound with a pop flavour. The sexual, dyonisiac spirit of disco mixed with the carnality of funk and the spirituality of soul, all in one little package [pun intended]. The best songs: DIRTY MIND, SISTER, HEAD and the great WHEN YOU WERE MINE

    6. CONTROVERSY - in fact, a very irregular album, 50% great [the original A side], 50% weak [the B side, except for LET'S WORK], but the best tracks here are among his best work. STAND-OUT tracks: CONTROVERSY [who else will put THE LORD'S PRAYER in the middle of a funky song called CONTROVERSY?], SEXUALITY and the sexy ballad DO ME, BABY

    7. PARADE - another uneven album [I hate DO U LIE? and the slow songs are weaker than usual], but with some classic PRINCE songs. The best tracks: KISS [a lesson of "how to be concise and funky"], MOUNTAINS, GIRLS AND BOYS.

    8. GRAFFITI BRIDGE - forget the silly movie [forget all his silly movies!], stick with the music. An underrated record, much criticized at the time of its release, it holds up well these days, with some highs and some lows. The highs: NEW POWER GENERATION, THE QUESTION OF U ELEPHANTS AND FLOWERS, ROUND AND ROUND [vocal by TEVIN CAMPBELL], SHAKE [by THE TIME], MELODY COOL [vocal by the great MAVIS STAPLES], STILL WOULD STAND ALL TIME [gigantic, epic ballad] and GRAFITTI BRIDGE [a beautiful gospel number]

    9. DIAMONDS AND PEARLS - his first 90's album is a very good one, but it is overlong [all early 90's records suffered from the same disease - check JANET JACKSON's JANET, etc]. Best moments: the title song, CREAM and the great GET OFF

10 - THE BLACK ALBUM - in spite of the myth, a good album with some fantastic moments. We find PRINCE flirtin' with rap on this effort. Best tracks: GRIND, CINDY C., WHEN 2 ARE IN LOVE, SUPERFUNKYCALIFRAGISEXY [uff!]

I'm tired of typing [and I bet you're tired of reading]

    Peace,

    zeca azevedo, a/k/a [:-> :lol:

    SONGS:
    -Uptown (disco period)
-I wanna be your lover (disco period)
    -Head (disco period)
-Take me with U (Purple Rain)
-The ballad of Dorothy Parker (Sign o' the times)
-Rock hard in a funky place (Black Album)
    -Dance on (Lovesexy)
    -Cream (Diamonds and pearls)
-Three chains of gold ("sign" LP)
-She spoke 2 me (The Vault)

    ALBUMS:
    -Dirty mind (1980)
    -1999 (1983)
    -Purple Rain (1984)
    -Parade (1986)
    -Sign o' the times (1987)
    -the "sign" one (1992)
    -The Vault (1998)

Some weeks ago I made a small homage to Purple Rain's 20th anniversary in a local radio show. It was strange to notice that the radio MC (a 25 year old) did not seem to know much about that album! Michael Jackson and Madonna are so much more into their heads.
