Very rare early 80s jazzy breakdancer's song (?)

Me again. I am looking for the title & artist of a song that was out back in about 1981 or 82. It was a b-boys greatest desire to breakdance to it, I know I was one of them too!

I heard it a lot on 98.7 KISS FM and WBLS often during their mastermixx sessions mostly. The beat was like a freestyle track similar to a MicMac or Cutting Records sound. There were no vocals but you can hear the jazzy rhythm blended in with mainly keyboards & digital synthesizers.

Specifically, I remember hearing during it's bridge a DJ scratching to James Brown's "Say It Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud" album, That much I DO know since it is still embedded in my mind from hearing it so much I'm sure. I might've heard a few cuts from the B-boys "Two, Three, Break" also, scratching on the BREAK part of the groove.

You may never hear it on airplay again, you might be lucky if were even on an old cassette today. If you were there back in 82 or so as a DJ or a breaker you might have an inkling of what this breakbeat is.

Any advice is appreciated, although I'll probably never find out anyway, whatever you know will help. Thanx all, Discomusic is the BEST! 8)

i used to listen to both of those stations back in '82. that was back in the day when radio stations in nyc actually played what they liked regardless of the rest of the country!

there were a few instrumentals from that year that were big with the breakdancers. i never breakdanced, but i always would stop and check out the dancers whenever i came across some them the street and parks, and being a music nut, i would always take note of what they were dancing to.

because you say jazzy and 1982, my first hunch is Pieces of A Dream's "Mt. Airy Groove." it has a particular "ping-pong" keyboard sound that sounds like those musical toy hammers sold in the streets around the same time. there was a rap version on the other side of the 12", but the radio stations mostly played the instrumental, and featured it often in the mix shows.

hope this helps - if it's not the record you're looking for, it's a great record nevertheless and you may like it if you don't know it already.

another possibility from 1981 is Pete Shelley's "Witness the Change" - that was more hypnotic, less jazzy, but a big, big hit in the mix shows on both stations, and a major breakdance record. paco on ktu was always giving that record his love!

SFBeary, Pieces Of A Dream; Definitely not, loved 'Mt. Airy Groove' though, still own the 12" today in fact, but not it. The beat was a little bit faster, more 'get on the mat NOW' attitude beat in clubs if you know what I mean.

Pete Shelley's 'Witness The Change'; Did a Google search, heard it. Loved it! The dub with 'I Don't Know What It Is' was totally CHOICE! However, as good as it is, that's too Hi NRG and not a scratch on it.

The song I remember had a DJ cutting "UHHH! Wit' Yo' BAAAAD Self!" That was from J.B. for sure. And it sounded something like what Key-Matic did in 'Breakin' In Space' (Gosh I hope you remember them!) in that period of time. It was more electro-freestyle for that era but still instrumental, with keyboard action unlike P.O.A.D. did. But nice try though. We can only hope someone will find the right track soon because I CAN'T SLEEP!!!!!!!!! Thanx buddy. Don't give up, OK?

There weren't many scratch records around in '81/2 and you mention 'Two, Three, Break' (which is from '83), so this may be something a little later?

I'll hazard a guess - possibly one of the 'Hip Hop On Wax' series 12"s on Vintertainment. They were by Red Alert, DJ Chuck Chillout & DJ Born Supreme Allah '(Two, Three, Break, Part II - The Sequel)'. However, they're from '84.

Your description is somewhat confusion, but im not a native english anyway.

But based on whatever i got from your text and what i remember being played in the saturday night show, it might not be a 81ish track.

May i suggest you listen to Northend/Happy Days/Tee's Happy <---instrumental
