GQ - Disco Nights - Nuff Said!

Just played a couple of albums (yes the old fashioned vinyl!) that were gathering dust. Both were from GQ. One being my all time fav, Disco Nights. The title track is still as fresh as it was all those years ago. Not forgetting the Make my dream a reality, another cool tune!
I remember seeing these guys at the Knebworth National Soul Day (circa 1980). WoW!

As a former DJ I used to mix the Disco Nights track into my set of pumping House tunes, the guitar intro was mixed beat perfect as the bass kicked in! Unfortunately, I don't think the "young" crowd appreciated such a classic tune!

Go on, dig out that GQ collection and enjoy - Ahh, memories!

as a member of the younger crowd myself i must admit that we have a problem when it comes to appreciating quality music

do you know how i can get my disco records to have a bass response similar to drum & bass and hard house records?

is there some kind of special module that i have to buy?

I'm interested to know:
Why do you need sooooo much bass, in order to fully appreciate tracks? Do you realize that the amount of bass on current productions and the amount that car systems pump out is actually, in real terms, an absolutely hideous amount. You'd only hear that kinda tonal balance in real life if you sat with your ear right next to the bass player's amp/cabs. Even then, any self respecting musician wouldn't play sooooo loudly that he drowned out the rest of the band.

What you ought be doing is toning down the bass on current stuff to mimic levels on the old records.

I like to hear bass, but hey man, I don't need my guts all shook up at the same time.

Just buy a parametric equalizer with a +/- 30 dB range and tweek the frequency that gives you that big fat bottom (probably around 50 Hz - 80 Hz). Boost 30Hz or below (maybe even 45Hz and below) and it'll also blow your bass bins to smithereens, if you over do it. What ever you do........be careful, be very careful.

So very very true. Unfortunately, most people today think that "good fidelity" means bowel-loosening bass, even on a soft rock station. Sometimes I think it's a ploy to boost sales of Kaopectate.

'Standing Ovation' also has a killer B-line. And what about 'GQ Down'? Those guys really had it goin' on back then. The bit in 'Disco Nights' where they sing '...Rock...Bass-Bass-Bass-Bass-Bass', is that an early example of sampler abuse?

Which version is that in? I've never heard it.

Of course the real killer bassline is in Rhythm Maker's (read GQ) Zone. (yeh, I'm bangin'on about that track once again).

Agree with Quinny and Graham on the bass thing. I doubt some of these younger folk have gone and listened to live shows.
As we say to each his own but it seems the music is not only stripped down to samples but they emphasize the bass to an extreme. Is that music?

"Rock...freak doem doem" No, you have the right song but I think the bass-bass-bass stands for the musical part after that and our friend is probably asking if the rock-freak-shout is a sample from another record :D I guess :)

I can see why Spellbound would like to see more Bass response similar to the new style of music because that is what (his generation) is used to hearing....

On the 12" version, there's a repeated bit. It may well be "Rock...Freak-freak-freak-freak-freak!..." as I coulda misheard it.

When I play music, I always use sound processor module " sound vitalizer ", with that I can very accurately adjust sound to get this soft Hi-Fi bass, and enhance the brilliance of high tones. Beside this I can influence the overall sound in much subtle way than with ordinary EQ. By the way, i'ts completely analogue.

exactly! even a good equalizer will work... I do that.
