I take it you mean the syndrum? Just had a brief scout for a history, but can't find anything yet. Maybe someone knows who invented the technology - that would help.
Hi all. I noticed by about 1978/79 a number of disco songs used the synthesized "ping" sound in them, few good examples are:
Kelly Marie - It Feels Like I'm In Love 1979
Rose Royce - Love Don't Live Here Anymore 1978
Rose Royce - Is It Love You Are After 1979
Anita Ward - Ring My Bell 1979
Just wondering when was this "ping" sound invented and when was it first used in disco or funk music? I can only guess Kraftwerk might of had something to do with the origins of the "ping".

What would you do without your muesli...where would you be without a bowl?
Just a guess, but I reckon you could put it down to 1977/78.
The session musicians on many a disco session were the absolute top guys and therefore the most likely to get hold of the syndrum when it first came out, either by having enough bread to afford one, or by having an endorsement from the manufacturer. Plus, if they did own one they'd be booked specifically if one couldn't be hired in.
It could become tiresome very quickly.
The ping sound was probably first created in the late 60s, and can be done with any analog synth with a self-oscillating filter. Pitch it down low enough, and it becomes a kick drum.
I guess you guys are talking about the "peewwww" used to fastly annoying effect in Anita Ward's "Ring my bell". Is this the same sound featured in a most short-fast format in other songs, i.e. Linda Clifford's "If my friends could see me now"? Or is that another one? Certainly it was trendy in strings-related or Euro-related material.
Even in 1981, long after the disco sound had changed, there was a hit that had this very sound as its central gimmick: "Ma quale idea" by Pino D'Angio. :o
Is that the Ping so heavenly used on "Here comes that sound again" by Love-De-Luxe??
Bring that Ping back!
I always thought it was a cool sound just like the weird violins on Belle Epoque's "Miss Broadway".
Uh-uh I like it :D
I can't find a good example of '77 disco with Ping. "Covetousness" played by Laurin Rinder & W. Michael Lewis is from '77, but it's more deep space than disco. '78 and '79 were great years for Ping, my favorites songs are "Poinciana" by Paradise Express ('78) and "Come To Me" by France Joli '' ('79). Ping was alive and well in '81 ("Love Money" by T.W. Funkmasters).
:)
And don't forget "The Second Time Around" by Shalamar...
Ammi Stewart - "Paradise Bird"
Another great track where the syndrum is used (and mentioned in another thread) T.W. Funkmasters - Love Money.
Pa-pa POW!
And not to forget one of my all-time favourites:
Black Slate: "Sticks man"
They Pinged like no man has pinged before!
Well, I see you guys know the machine that goes 'ping'!!! Does anyone here remember MONTY PYTHON?
I remember that... MP's Meaning of Life, right? :DOriginally Written by zeca azevedo
Hi Nano,
you're right! THE MEANING OF LIFE, that's the correct answer! Congratulations, you're the winner and your prize is... one machine that goes PING just for you! You can put it in your bedroom and enjoy all those PINGS! night after night after night! You are a lucky guy, I envy you! :D
Peace and lots of PINGS! for you all,
zeca azevedo, my head goes PING sometimes, you know
Hey, don't stop pinging now, we all love to ping:
Dan I: "Monkey chop"
:D
I know they weren't a disco group, but, Kraftwerk used a syndrum or too in their choonz.
Other favorites pings:
79/Fat Larry's Band "Lookin' For Love"
78/Paul Jabara "Pleasure Island"
78/Donna Summer "MacArthur Park Suite"
Never left your cake out in the rain :)
I am so glad someone started a topic on this!
The 'ping'? I have always called it the 'piou-piou!' All I have to say about is: whoever invented it, you are a genius! Where would disco be without this silly little noise? Even today it still pops up in disco house tunes. Listen to 'The Greatest Hit' by Annie for a fantastic tribute to this daft little noise!
Piou-piou!![]()
Womb Prayer!

Hey thanks for that example, that song dates 1977 so it looks like the syndrums existed prior to 1978.And not to forget one of my all-time favourites:

Couple of other examples of early syndrum sounds well sort of anyways is "It Makes You Feel Like Dancing" by Rose Royce in 1977 which had the "ZOOOM" sound effect and Commodores "Rapid Fire" from their 1974 Machine Gun album had the "WOOOM WOOOM WOOOM" sound effect.
Here's a few more examples of great disco songs with the ping sound:
Chain Reaction - Dance Freak 1979
Joe Bataan - Rap-o-Clap-o 1978
Musique - Keep On Jumpin' 1978

Yes, this ping sound is what I love too!
I like it in Boogie Woogie Dancin Shoes and Sunset People! And do I remember correctly that it's pings also in Is It Love You After by Rose Royce
I started to fantasize a disco mix full of ping :D
How could you all forget "Love And Desire" by Arpeggio? I mean, it had both the syndrums AND the ping/pong/piou-piou thing going...
oooops
Another ping:
"Goin' Out Of My Head" by Gloria Gaynor
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards
My favourite ping song:
'Stepping out' by Kool & the Gang (one of my favourite bands!)
And Bohannon used da ping heavily on "Take the country to N.Y. city" (great funk-track BTW).
