Magnifique by Magnifique now by . .

i just came home from seeing a concert by the *it* rock band of the moment, Scissor Sisters, who, in the middle of a blistering set, did a full-on f*cking incredible rendition of "Magnifique" by Magnifique. to refresh your memory, "Magnifique" was one of the last full-on Eurodisco tracks of 1980 as the style morphed into hi-NRG, and it was a massive underground disco hit in clubs like the Saint and the Trocadero, and even got the Bobby V. remix treatment on an early issue of Disconet. Scissor Sisters did the entire song (and all of its absurdly trashy, ridiculous lyrics) in an entirely faithful synthesizer arrangement, but with additional guitar, live drums, and banging cowbell.

    it was SHOCKING!

    and deeply, deeply fabulous.

    :D

Hey, Shreikback of all groups did a cover of a KC and the Sunshines Band song so anything is possible. Still, to come up with Magnifique means they are pretty open-minded.

Yeah, didn't they do a cover of Get Down Tonight ? I remember seeing the clip for it when it came out. Apparently KC was supposed to be in the clip.

I used to be a fan of Shreikback and bought the CD, but quickly got rid of it so I'm not sure which KC song.

The Scissor Sisters' cd is one of my faves of this year. It's funny cause that Aussie snob Born2Disco turned me unto this one. :D Now he ususally puts "puke" or "poop" emoticons up in his posts whenever I mention a name like "Elton John"--but this cd is like vintage Elton (circa "Honky Chateau" or "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player") with some Bee Gees and David Bowie and even George Michael thrown in for good measure It's good poppy rock done by a half gay; half straight band with a very GAY sensibility and expert pop songwriting skills . It's quite terrific from start to finish. The GAY sensibility would certainly lead them to a cover of "Magnifique"!!!!!

BTW, "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" is using Scissor Sister's "Filthy/ Gorgeous" in their promos. I also saw a video for one of their other tunes "Take Your Mama" on VH-1 a few weeks ago. I was flipping through the channels and I had the mute button on--but it looked so GAY that I turned the sound on and immediately recognized the Scissor Sisters.

Amoeba was blasting another track "Tits On The Radio" a while back, so I guess the word is spreading.

As far as Shriekback goes---they covered K.C. & the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Tonight". I didn't throw my copy away!!!

BTW, I've read that "Scissor Sisters" got their name from a lesbian sexual postion. Think about it.

I got my new Rolling Stone yesterday (7/31/04). Saw your Scissor Sisters cd review-- was delighted with your observations!!! Vintage Elton RULES!!!!!! ("Harkens back to a time when pop stars had career longevity" or something like that!!!!) Nice to know we still are in sync musically. :D But only 3 stars *** ???--I think it deserves another one. **** :D :D :D :D
