    Andy Williams query

I've seen the disco version of Love Story/Where Do I Begin listed on this site in various places but I've never heard it. Was it a total re-recording or a remix of his earlier slow version? Also, was the disco version a big hit in the US 'cos it didn't do much here in '79 as I recall. I've tried to get hold of a 12" copy of this track as I'm quite curious (I love camp revamps :P ) but can't find it anywhere; is it rare? (Sorry if this has been discussed before but I did a search & couldn't find anything :-? )

    hey steely d.,

this is one remake i really do like, even if it is super-dooper-to-the-max camp! it's so melodramatic that it works for me - in the same bag as johnny mathis' "begin the begine," but less relaxed, more heart-on-sleeve anguished.

i can't say for sure, but judging from the 12", i'd say that it was a re-recording and not remixed from a ballad version - that kind of remixing wasn't typical until the '90s.

it wasn't a big hit in the us, although it was probably played in dance classes catering to moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas - it's reeeeeeeeally symphonic and right for hustling.

it was issued commercially on us columbia and i think it was even reissued in the '80s, so i wouldn't classify it as particularly rare, but it might have been one of those records that was simply tossed out in large numbers due to who sang it and what it was - i would think that it would show up on ebay or other online sites fairly regularly.

Thanks sfb. I've looked on GEMM as I find them really good usually but I just don't want to buy the boring ballad version by mistake as they give you very little info.on a record.

just be sure you get the 12" for all its disco extravagance/excess!

i'm sure i stole this expression from a brit somewhere, but is is one record that's "camp as a row of tents."

Oh yes that sounds very British! I have a friend who goes a step further & says 'camp as a row of pink fluffy tents'! 'Camp as Christmas' & 'camp as tits' are others that I've heard.
