 This review probably explains why I don't recognize the titles. :o
looking through some old mags and single reviews i found one that really amused me
PENNY MCLEAN-1-2-3-4 FIRE/THE WIZARD BUMP [EMI 2479]
even if you like silver convention, even if you liked lady bump, its inconceivble that anybody could like this chick's newest seven incher.she makes tina charles sound like etta james...
hey leave tina out of this!
 This review probably explains why I don't recognize the titles. :o
those titles are pretty comical even without the charles/james comparison.
the question is, discodisk, do you (or anybody else) like or even remember these titles? i remember she had an entire album, but all i have is the 12".
coincidently, i've been listening to a lot of silver convention lately. all those lounge and chillout compilations i've enjoyed over the years makes silver convention more comprehensible and fun, even beyond the hits.
favorite non-hit track: "dancing in the aisles."
I always liked Silver Convention but even Penny Mc Lean's "Lady Bump" is not one of my favourites. It's too poppy!
But , hey, I only know "1-2-3-4-fire" and I will check out the others.
i managed to "digitally obtain" the a-side of the aforementioned penny single . . . um . . . remember that recent thread about camp and what defines it?
this is IT!
:o :P ![]()
I wonder if the Penny McLean track "Tutankhamon" ever got a US realese? If not, don't panic, you're not missing much. Bizarrely enough, the Gertude/Penny also got to sing on "The Bird In A Silver Gage", a 1977 jazz fusion album by Herbie Mann, accompanied by The Munich Machine. There's a curio or what.
Both of the tracks in the thread title are on her Lady Bump LP...............
I haven't listen to it yet.............will do soon, but judging by the review I will need a STIFF drink methinks.
(digs for a few minutes through pile of unsorted vinyl, finds LP, and puts it on)
At first I thought this was just mediocre, but as I was typing this, there came a point where she tries to belt it out and fails miserably. Ouch.
The tight delay on the vocal track doesn't do it any favours, either.
Poor Miss Penny. She Gets No Respect.
I LOVE "LADY BUMP"!!!!
"LooK At Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!" :D :D :D
I must pull out that LP and listen to these other tracks. :o
Silver Convention was my first DISCO purchase. I'm still loyal.![]()
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Yeah, me too, :lol:Originally Written by markydefad
'1234 Fire' was not as good and "Penny" her other album AFAIK didn't even produce a club hit, but "Lady Bump" should be credited for been part of the music that popularized discos at the time, and IMO should be judged in the context of the music played in the clubs of the day, 1975 or abouts is when Disco began to get "Pretty", and dancing close and personal began to take hold.
I remember Lady Bump blasting at local club 'Rum Bottoms' (later Limelight) with dozens of couples dancing to this sound, of course is not "Grammy " material but at the time this sound defined "Disco" and fun an besides this music was completely different from everything pumped to the airways.
Here are some "Pretty" music played (and mixed) in clubs around the same time.
"Smile "- Simon Said
"Number Onederful" Jay and the Techniques
"One fine day" Julie
"Baby now that I found you" Vickie Sue Robinson
"I can't give you anything" Stylistics
"Magic's in the air" Ronnie Walkers
"Oh what a night" Linda Thompson
"Never going to let you go" Vickie Sue Robinson
"Smile" Simon Said
"Our day will come" Frankie Valli
"One way street" Beckett Brown
"Girl, you better wake up" Liberty
"Swearing to god" Frankie Valli
And so many others...
MIXMACHINE thats interesting never seen that mentioned round these parts! a 73 release,we used this at ian levines club in 74 but ONLY the instrumental sideOriginally Written by Mixmachine
im curious to know if you used the vocal at your club and if so did the people run screaming from the club like king kong had arrived  just kiddin' but those vocals were bad :o but to this day i cant get enough of the instrumental 8)
Hi fellas,
I borrowed from a friend a DVD with some old disco video clips. Among the paleolithical stuff, there are two (!) videos by SILVER CONVENTION, one for FLY ROBIN FLY (with some guys on motorcicles, pretty funny stuff), one for GET UP AND BOOGIE. She's there in flesh and bones (more bones than flesh at that time), Penny McLean. I was never a fan of Silver Convention - GET UP AND BOOGIE is not even a song, not for me, it's just "get up and boogie" repeated 300 times. On the same DVD I saw 2 videos by RICHIE FAMILY, one for AMERICAN GENERATION, one for THE BEST DISCO IN TOWN. Better than SILVER CONVENTION. Then there are two 70's videos by SISTER SLEDGE, WE ARE FAMILY and HE'S THE GREATEST DANCER, waaay better than RICHIE FAMILY. Then there's a early 70's video by THE THREE DEGREES, with the ladies beautifully dressed and singin' DIRTY OLD MAN - and we have a winner :D :D !!! Philly Soul 4ever!!!
What's the meaning of this post?!? I don't know
zeca azevedo, dazed and confused
DiscoDisk you are right, the vocals here are average, the singer sound just like your average local house band, but the song was fun, (I like the drums), anyways in those years I was just doing parties and stuff (no clubs jet ) and I’m sure I used both sides of the 7” (always did), don’t recall any fling bottles coming my way  , this record was played in local clubs, that’s how I used to pick up on many records then, although really, this one is not a very good example of “pretty” music, my mistake.
As I mentioned earlier, Silver Convention's first LP ws my first disco purchase. :D It was mainly for "Save Me" as well as the hot hit of the moment "Fly Robin Fly".
It was danceable ABBA to me.![]()
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
I still like "Save Me", but I was never all that fond of "Fly, Robin, Fly".
I really must pull out SC's Madhouse LP again. Such an odd little story on the back, given the style of music...
I really like 'Golden Girls' as well as 'Madhouse'; I think they got better as they went on but the buying public obviously didn't agree with me. :(
...ya gotta beat the street......
I'm glad you said it  and I agree 100%. Every time I hear it I want to smash the damn record. I love "Save Me", and "Fly, Robin, Fly" was nice. Dark, low energy and an over abundance of bass. But honestly, weren't all these songs just the title repeated a few hundred times? Who cares --- they were fun! :DOriginally Written by zeca azevedo
I liked the "Madhouse" album too, Steely! My favorite was the "Love In A Sleeper" album with "Spend The Night With Me," but that came out long after Penny had left the group.Originally Written by Steely Dan
As for Penny's album, I loved the song "Lady Bump" but I HATED the album. One of the albums I thought was a complete waste of money!

Yuck!! :x :x :x Disco at its worse!
Just when you thought it was all over - no, no, no
i have the "Lady Bump" lp and my fav track is the "ABC Of Love". Although a lot of Silver Convention and Penny may sound samey, I really love the use of strings in disco music, and most of their recordings have that in them. The Wizard Bump is better than 1234 Fire in my opinion, only because of the ridiculous pseudo chanting in it. Fav Silver convention track: Everybodys Talkin Bout Love.
