I bought the Tangerue CD last week and am enjoying it immensely (is there a better disco tune than Doin' Your Own Thing?). I have a question about the length of the last song, Don't Stop The Music. The sleeve says 7.50 but it's 6.55 on the CD. Is there a 7.50 version anywhere? Most of the other tracks on the CD have incorrect times, but not as blatant as this.
By the way... pronunciation.... is it Tangeray or Tanjeroo?
Cheers.

there was a thread where the differences between the cd and the lp were discussed. i can't remember the name of it, but it wasn't too long ago.
Barry, you're right. One of them is here...

there was another topic or two discussing this, but you'll need to search the forums.

The vinyl version of "Don't Stop The Music" from the Strange Affair lp is the same as on the CD. The album also shows the time as 7:50 which we now know is incorrect. :x
What's the deal with this CD/LP? Who was Tangerue?
I have the CD and the info is (as usual with HOT Productions) absolutely non existant.
The tracks strike me as more competent than inspiring and I personally find the (similar BPMs?) THUMP, THUMP, THUMP of almost every track too samey and boring. I could never imagine these tracks really 'lighting up' a dancefloor, but more than willing to hear your take on it. Should I buy a few dozen as an investment?
This is 'producer-driven' disco, Quinny. You know, that "old man stuff" you don't particulary like. As Bernie mentions in the link, the guys who produced Ultimate (Bruce Weeden and Juliano <?Guliano?> Salerni) also produced Tangerue and Strange Affair. Same musicians, background vocalists and recording studio in Philly, PA. Ultimate was picked up by Casablanca. Strange Affair was not and available here only as an import. I don't know about Tangerue.
For those of us who love and loved 'euro-disco' these songs did indeed light up the dancefloor, especially "I'm Ready/Disco Star", "Don't Stop The Music" and "Everynight, Everyday".
strange affair's "don't stop the music" was a favorite at the saint with robbie leslie. i'm sure part of the appeal was that it was traditional orchestral disco released in a year (1980) when that stuff was scarce.
i've got to concur with billywho that the standout tangerue/strange affair track is "doin' your own thing," although i've never heard it in a club. i don't think the tangerue lp got many plays back in the day (it was only issued in canada.)
one interesting difference between the cd and the lp that hasn't yet been mentioned is that the cd artwork has magically removed the cigarette from the guy's mouth on the tangerue cover!
the cocktail remains in his hand.
Well I'll be damned, I never noticed that before! Political correctness taken too far as usual.Originally Written by sfbeary

i'm as anti-smoking as the next guy - maybe even more so. (dad died from smoking when i was only 17.)
but it is funny to me that the least detail-oriented label in the history of the cd would concern itself with removing a cigarette from a vintage lp cover when they couldn't be bothered to remove the pops from their cheesy scratchy-vinyl-derived cds. (or notice that they included the same fun fun track twice on their *greatest hits* cd, but not on the tracklisting. grrrr!)
they're one label that righteously deserves to go out of business, no matter how many disco records they once revived. (and don't get me started on their disco remix series - ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!)
Any of you guys know who Tangerue was? I take it that IS the name of a solo singer.
I can easily imagine Doin' Your Own Thing causing a supernova on the dancefloor, not just lighting it up. I'm amazed that sfbeary says he's never heard it in a club. I'm a couple of years too young to have gone clubbing at that time so can't comment on my own experience, but that song is "died and gone to heaven" disco. What were the DJs thinking about?Originally Written by QUINNY
A name that I was interested to see on the sleeve was Vaneese Thomas. My previous exposure to her was from her 1987 soul album, with the song Let's Talk It Over.
Thanks for the link to the previous Tangerue thread. I agree with others that the other standout track on the CD is I'm Ready/Disco Star, another dancefloor burner.
Does anyone know where can I find a larger pic of the Tangerue cover?
Voyage :P
Just a couple of producer types and an army of studio musicians. All the songs were sung by a girlie chorus. As with Ultimate, the vocalists got no credit on the sleeve.Originally Written by QUINNY

What I should've said is that the original LP sleeve barely has any credits on it either, much like the Ultimate LP. I must say, I'm astonished that you would have this in your collection, Q. I thought this was the sort of stuff you absolutely detested. Although I've yet to hear the Strange Affair LP, I figured Tangerué would be the type of thing that would have you retching. After all, I love it.![]()
Graham: What can I say? It was going cheap and I'd seen some of you guys (semi) raving over it.
With my ultimate goal of presenting some kind of retro disco radio show in sunny mediterranean climes, anything that's slightly esoteric and rated is a good enough punt for even a few bucks of my money. I can pretend to like things as well as the next guy, when needs must.
Now, should I buy a few dozen as an investment?
I recently watched "Jaws" on TV. Robert Shaw's character, the salty Brit shark expert Quint, reminded me of how I picture our salty Brit-- Quinny, in my mind.![]()

And now for something, completely different! :DOriginally Written by markydefad
Anyway, you guys are gonna cost me a fortune. I've never heard of this group and I'm not sure if I heard any of the tracks on the floor. If Nicky and Graham liked it while it seems to have piqued Quinny's interest suggest it must not be too bad!
Find them and destroy them!

Q flutters eyelashes and strikes Jessica Rabbit pose, "but honey, I'm a sweet thang!"
Paul: If you see it cheap....pick it up. Otherwise, hmmm, it may be to your taste.
I must admit I don't recall Tangerue--I don't have their CD--BUT I heard the Strange Affair tracks are also included on this CD and those are terrific. They sound kind like a smoother version of the Trammps--"Don't Stop The Music", for example, which I heard on an old Troc tape & another song that Nicky id'd as being theirs also; I'm looking for this one.![]()

I'm quite curious to hear Strange Affair myself. Tangerué is very much like the first Ultimate album -- which is not surprising, as it was done by the same people. The second Ultimate LP leaves much to be desired though.Originally Written by markydefad

Here's the politically incorrect version
Just played this two Lp for the first time in more than 20 years :o ,
Graham, to me "Strange Affair" is even more similar to ‘Ultimate’ than Tangerue and the recording quality is better but not by much (Italian Pressing, on Targa label-TAL-1402).
I remember this Lps were released to late to catch on to the ‘Hustle’ craze, and they just didn’t do much at the time.
Damn... now I really want that Strange Affair LP. Sonically, the problem with Tangerué is the heavy, sloppy compression that Unidisc slapped on it when they mastered it.Originally Written by Mixmachine
