    Underground Disco Classics ?

    Hi,
As an avid Disco fan, witha growing collection I am trying to unearth Underground Disco classics from the 74-79 era.
As I am UK based it is a tough job trying to unearth these USA jems.
Is there a listing, or could anyone reply with their faves/jems/...................Thanks

Perhaps you should check out our Charts section. Many of the titles listed are not the mainstream club hits. "Underground Classics" is a wide bit of territory to cover, especially without your definition of 'underground'.

    Recommended "underground" disco...
"Dance All Over The World" by T.C. James & The Fist-O-Funk Orchestra (1978, probably from Canada).
"Discoquando" by Tony Renis & Tony Renis (1978, probably from Italy).

This is a really good song, never heard anyone else ever mention this one around here, it used to play locally in many clubs, recently I found a pretty good instrumental 12" import by a different band (?) that can't find right now.

many of this records were considered underground in my area during the early years of Club dancing, (72-76)although many now are well known at the time they were completly different from the top 40 favorites played in most radio stations.

Starsky: Any chance of qualifying what is classic and underground. In the UK this term could be applied to any non-national chart record that was played in clubs from '72 - '77/'78. The whole scene was more or less underground until Saturday Night Fever came along.

Underground classics means tracks that still get spinned in clubs with street credibility, that's what the terms classic and underground are all about, right? Titles I've heard getting play recently include
Cat Stevens: Was Dog a Doughnut
Gentlemen and Their Lady: ...Like Her
    Edgar Winter: Above And Beyond
    New Order: Blue Monday
    Cloud One: Disco Juice
Brian Eno: Jezebel Spirit - This track samples the voice of a real exorcist trying to cast out the demon Jezebel. I myself spinned it last Saturday, following a moody 15 min intro of Cabaret Voltaire: Badge of Evil/Haiti. The halfbaked idea was to get a demonic possession motif going. The speeded up Jezebel went rather well in spirit at least into Donna Summer's Summer Fever. Tormented with unholy desires of the flesh Donna writhes and moans as the Haitian demon won't let go and of course she wants her to stay in! After this it was tracks like Rolling Stones: Sympathy For The Devil, Black Devil Club: H-Friend, Giorgio's Lost Angeles and Utopia from the From Here To Eternity suite, and as it was a fetish night, one had to include Master And Servant by Depeche Mode, Grace Jones singing Warm Leatherette and Serge Gainsbourg's Love On The Beat. Cerrone's Love in C Minor and Giorgio's I Wanna Funk With You Tonite had to be squeezed in as well. Made no sense really but at least some leather nuns, bareassed boy bitches in stiletto heels and a couple of grossly overweight dominatrixes danced merrily. Cult stuff all of those tracks, too. Sami M who has also been posting on this site followed these early midnight offerings with his set of more recent stuff and harder beats that got the action going in more ways than one. A good time was had by all though the male stripper was lousy.

Is that Judy Cheeks by any chance; her & Bob Esty both worked on Donna's 'Once Upon a Time' so it seems likely?

    Quinny,
I think Underground disco classic is as Jussik stated.
I'll leave the classification to the 'experts'.
I was really after tracks that are STILL great even now, but didn't make the mainstream DISCO /R&B charts in USA or UK, so if you know of any please add them to this post ??

Some that I can think of were:
Cat stevens - was dog a doughnut - not really thought of as Disco back then ?
Wings - Goodnight tonight (USA) (ditto)
Atlantic Starr - Let's rock n roll (UK)
make me believe in you / ain't no love lost - Patti Jo
    etc, etc, etc...
I know this is an inexact science, each country/area/club had their own 'classics'.
Some never got heard of very far from their source.......that is the beauty of the Internet, and this site in particular. There are numerous people around the globe who love this music and each has found or knows some tracks that others may not have heard yet. We all know some BOMBS just waiting for a wider audience,
    JUST SHARE THEM..................
