the wierdest record i ever heard was "pray for rosemarys baby dont remember the artist, on the pink jen-jillus label out of new york 75/76 i bought it blind sillily thinking it might be a dancer [because richard popcorn wylie had a massive northern soul anthem at the time with rosemary what happened & i was only 16!]it "was" classed as a soul record,it was about a baby that was thrown down a waste disposal chute the singer was describing every item it was getting tangled up with on the way down and the baby was screaming and screaming,what were they on in new york in the 70s?! if anyone else has heard that please tell me im not dreaming as i dont know anyone thats heard that. SO WHATS THE WIERDEST RECORD YOU EVER HEARD???? [a close second is "papaya" urzula dudziac arista and that "did" get club plays!]

Hmmm, lots to choose from in this category...

- Aphex Twin: Come To Daddy
Richard D. James has shocked my jaded ears on more than one occasion. But I think this track has to take the cake. Loud, distorted, violent, and utterly psychotic. Punk sounds tame after hearing this one.

- Vangelis: Invisible Connections
One half of the album consists of nothing but random blips and bleeps with massive amounts of reverb piled on. The other side features what sounds like someone smashing the insides of a piano to bits, with all sorts of varispeed and pan effects.

Noise-fest of feedback and sound generators. Like Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.

- VoNo: Dinner Für 2
This one takes a bit of explanation. Many years ago, I was collecting everything I could find from the German label Sky. Sky was a very small label -- they only put out about 10 LPs per year -- and they were active from around 1977 to the early 1990s. Their catalog was a mix of German prog-rock and electronic music. Their best-known releases are probably the two Brian Eno LPs with Cluster (FINALLY available outside of Germany as of a few years ago). Anyway, Sky put out some of the very best electronic music I'd ever heard, but they also put out some of the weirdest stuff I've heard to this date. Now... Does everyone remember how for a few brief moments around 1982, there was this really hip ultra-minimalist German electronic music thing happening? Think Trio's infamous "Da Da Da". Well, this takes that aesthetic to an extreme. Produced by two brothers VOlker and NOrbert, each song is nothing but a weird repeating loop on a Jupiter 8 (early 80s synth with a smooth and quirky sound) while one of them shouts things out in German. Curious to know what was going on, I recorded the album and loaned it to a co-worker who was fluent in the language. Several days later, he ran up to me and said "I can't believe it! It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard!!! All they do is say something, and then repeat it, and then paraphrase it, over and over again! It's like this:
'Dinner for 2
2 having dinner
2 eat dinner
They are eating now.'
And I listened to the entire frikkin' thing! I kept thinking that they would tell a story, or start singing, or something, but they never did! What the **** is wrong with these guys??!!"
And to make matters even more strange, their follow-up LP was straightforward rock music.

The weirdest disco related song I've heard of would have to be:

New Birth - Got To Get A Knutt 1973

Reason being was because of the weird noises they make such as the fart hiccup sounds. And the "It ain't gonna rain no more no more, it ain't gonna rain no more" which sounds like the voice of some typical stereotype 19th century middle age gold miner who has a white beard and wears long johns underneath his overalls and says "Hiyolk, there is gold in dem darn dem hills". And there are other weird bits in the song.

Another weird song to think of is:

Black Lace - Agadoo 1984

This song sounds like a childrens dance lesson song, but the real weirdness is in the video clip. What's weird is all the band members are dressed as pieces of fruit, one dressed as a banana, one dressed as a cherry, one dressed as a pineapple (I think) and I forget what the others were dressed like but were all dressed as fruit. It makes me laugh seeing a bunch of fruit playing instruments.

They're not disco items, but weeeeird suuuure they are:
-Weasels ripped my flesh (Frank Zappa with the Mothers of Invention): probably the weirdest item from FZ's early years. A couple of good rock songs ("My guitar wants to kill your mama"), one good parody ("Oh no"), lots of noise and deconstructive music on the rest, and the end is exactly ONE MINUTE of real white noise played loud.
-Lumpy gravy (Zappa without MOI): one "song" covers the 2 sides, with bits of songs played at different speeds and stone-out dialogue.
-Jazz from hell (FZ): this is from his later years, from the second track forward they're instrumental exercises on no-music (no-harmony, to say the least) played with the Synclavier, a weird synthesizer. There are some more items like this in FZ's collection.
-Zeit (Tangerine Dream): double LP, one song, like one hour of one sustained chord, then on the last side changes to other chord (oh! What a shock!) always on that grainy synthesizer. Warhol would have liked it.
On this vein there are also some Fripp & Eno items like No pussyfooting, God save the Queen and other "frippertronics" stuff. I actually seated over two loooonnnnnggg concerts of Mr. Fripp doing this stuff live!
Weird is what weird gets.

Zeit is pretty weird, but I actually quite like this one for inner-mind-tripping... I guess I'm so accustomed to it that the bizarreness factor doesn't even faze me anymore. Having said that...

I wouldn't call it one song over four sides... each one is quite different from the other. But I would say that only the first piece has *anything* resembling conventional music in it.

And just to nitpick... there's very little actual synthesizer on "Zeit"... most of the bizarre sounds are feedback, noise generators, and processed acoustic/electric instruments. I suspect the "grainy" sound is a by-product of the production, which was probably done on a budget of about $50.

Still, it's infinitely more listenable than Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music".

Try listening to VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR's PAWN HEARTS album (if you can stand it) or PETER HAMMILL's THE FUTURE NOW (Peter is Van Der Graaf's singer).

In terms of DISCO, I think Rinder And Lewis 1977 album SEVEN DEADLY SIN's is a pretty uncommercial and un-pop DISCO album (remember DISCO was supposed to be fun, commercial, disposable and POP. This album is miles ahead removed from TINA CHARLES or VILLAGE PEOPLE, as is their follow up WARRIORS).

Umm...The strangest one I ufourtantly came across was a 'disco' remake of Led Zepplin's 'Stairway To Heaven'. Why this record was ever produced is beyond my grasp. The 'Disco' folks don't want 'Rock' music to dance to, and the 'Rock' folks didn't want anything to do with 'Disco'. If I remember correctly this waste of vinyl was by the 'Wonderland' band. I received a copy of this 'music' at the time from my record pool and fourtanly never opened it and placed it on my turtables. I heard this 'song' at a compeating Disco (I worked the 'ABC' and down the road was 'Crown') and thanked the lord I never opened it!!! All the Best, DJ Phil

Paulo: well, I own BOTH Hammill's "Pawn hearts" (VDG) and "Future now" and think they're quite excellent. Quite dramatic, sure, probably depressing music, but definitely not weird. (Far "weirder" for that matter is Hammill's "Loops and reels", made with tape experiments).
Maybe Hammill is strange, but compared to Eno and Fripp... well...

I like those albums too, but nevertheless their sound is weird. I mean, in the progressive rock field they're nowhere near Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, for instance. My favorite VDGG album is H TO HE WHO AM THE ONLY ONE and THE QUIET ZONE THE PLEASURE DOME. Concerning HAMMILL my favourites are THE FUTURE NOW & 1986 AND CLOSE AS THIS (this one is a more "normal" album). Bye

Paulo: I'm glad you really like a tortured soul like Hammill. My fave of VDG is "Still life", from PH it's a tie between "Over" and "The future now", probably (also "A black box"), but I didn't hear all his prolific oeuvre. (In fact the true PH fan is my friend Marcelo, who insisted to me about him.) Maybe what happens with PH is that he's really into introspective lyrics, of the confessional type, more even that on the science-fiction/psychedelic stuff most "progressives" were on. In fact, I think Roger Waters himself took this route, and this lead to the breakup of both VDG and Pink Floyd. But this is only an opinion...
By the way, did you see him live? (I did on two occassions, one alone and another with his 90's band. Still amazing!)

The German superstar, mannequin-like bleached blond Heino has some mondo beyondo tracks on his albums such as Mexican tequila songs delivered in German with operatic pompousness, phased yodling mixed with castanet sounds etc. I'd also choose stuff by Serge Gainsbourg. This iconoclast did do his best to offend and scandalise in every possible way and very often he succeeded. Serge had a duet out with his 12 yrs old daughter Charlotte called "LEMON INCEST" - and it hit the French top ten sales charts. The video had the two in bed together but not touching - that could have proved too much. What went on in Serge's mind when he decided he just had to record something like that, with his own daughter? I bought the thing but never ever play it. The lyrics are only suggestive but it's all just too offputting and rather impossible to joke about. Serge always had this thing for underage lolitas, the theme pops up in his whole repertoire from early 60's on. And yet he was canonised as a national treasure by the French minister of culture Jack Lang and there are homages on French tv every year. - The books Incredibly Strange Music, vols 1-2 by Andrea Vale&Juno, still in print, have a lot to add. And there's a cd too.

The 'weirdest or strangest' recording. Heck for me it would be anything 'Techno' that verges on the 'fast side'. In the 'Disco' heyday anything approaching 140 bpm (though I did once manage to hustle to Donna Summer's 'Sunset People') would soon send the dancers to the bars in desperate need of fluids!! I cannot to this day figure out the popularity of 'Techno' (when the bpms are techno-fast). The only way I could figure to dance to it would be on every 4th beat! How is such a fast tempo dealt with? Thank you for the time and space for my ranting!!

Drum 'n' Bass at 160 bpm -- and with syncopated, irregular rhythms? Damn, I could never figure that out.
