    Blaxman:

Thanks for the comments. I had fun playing some tunes from Blaxploitation soundtracks. I look forward to seeing what will be on your playlist Saturday. I know I'll be pleasantly surprised. Curious to hear what will make them move in Brazil. Keep me posted.

Been waiting all week for your list, Sam, and - what can I say - It was definitely worth waiting for!!!

I can only repeat what our good friend Blax wrote - Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Kaygees, Esther Phillips!!!! Brilliant stuff!!

Curtis Mayfield is one of my all-time favourites. When I finally upgraded my hi-fi to include a Cd player, the first Cd I bought was a Curtis Mayfield box set. Even now, I'm still playing and getting to know tracks from this collection ..It hasn't got Give Me All Your Love, unfortunately though. For my mind, he had one of the best voices of them all. Up there alongside Marin, Otis and Donny (Hathaway).

Where did that James Brown track come from? I've got loads of his records, but I don't think I know that one. I saw James Brown in concert once. And do you know what my most vivid memory of him was?? it was his TEETH - they were so damn SPARKLING DAZZLING WHITE. I couldn't believe it!!! (And what a mover !!)

I really like Esther Phillips as well. Recently, I've picked up Cds with some of her other tracks on (ie apart from the wonderful "What A Difference A Day Makes"). One I really like is her version of Gil Scott-Heron's "Home Is Where The Hatred Is"
An outstanding outpouring of bittersweet soul ..

And as for that Kool and the Gang track, you played. Oh yes!!! On the UK soul scene, "Summer Madness" has definite anthem status. I have very good memories of that track. What does it mean to me? - for me it's autumn time, now a quiet time of the year, maybe I'm out in the hills, and I'm simply reflecting on the Summer that has just gone - all the crazy things we did, all that "Summer Madness". A very evocative track indeed!!

And I won't mention Pleasure again. I haven't bought the CD yet, but I will!!!

Shame that not many people turned up this time, Sam. But I bet those that did got their money's worth!! Where is it that you're based??

Take care and keep up the good work!

PS Blax - lookin' forward to your list too!!
My DJ-ing days seemed to have passed me by ...

    Jazz:

As we had discussed the blaxploitation era last week, I thought I would focus on music from some of those soundtracks. Thus, 'Give me your love', a great song by Curtis Mayfield was on the 'Superfly' Soundtrack. 'The Boss' by James Brown was from the 'Black Ceaser' soundtrack. Another fantastic funky James Brown song. By the way, Marvin and Donny Hathaway, fantastic! Love their music and voices. I have much of their material and they get played alot by me. A few other guys I would put in that category are Billy Paul, Al Green and Teddy Pendergrass. Three unmistakable, unique voices that will stand the test of time. I too really dig Esther Phillips as I have at least three or four of her LP's. Definitely have to find a way to get some 'Pleasure'. There is a greatest hits CD available, however, if at all possible get the individual LP's because the greatest hits compilation does not do this band justice. The LP's to look for are 'Joyous', 'Get to the feeling' and 'Future now'. There are others but these three on the Fantasy label is their signature stuff. I am based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the U.S.. One hour north of Philadelphia and ninety minutes west of New York City. So I grew up influenced by the funk and soul sound of Philly and the club sound of NYC. Would love to visit the UK someday as I know the music scene is groundbreaking there. Especially House music which I love very much. Your DJ'ing days may be behind you, as mine will be soon, however, the music is always there. That is our common bond. We may get old, but the music stays the same. Enjoy!

Thanks for the details on some of those Blaxploitation trax, Sam.

I got into the music in around '77, which means that I missed a lot of that "Blaxploitation" stuff first time around. So I have to discover it retrospectively. Therefore, the help/guidance that you give is most welcome.

When you mention Billy Paul, one tune that is going around my head at present (from this acid jazz CD series I have been buying - "Diggin' Deeper") is "Am I Black Enough For You?". That is deep man - I love it. (That "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" track is also on the same CD.)

    Cheers Sam

    Jazz:

Funny you should mention Acid Jazz as I love this genre of music. I have many compilations, especially from the mid '90's, that may be of interest. Some of the more noteworthy are:

    Giant Steps/Volume 1
    Dorado/A compilation
This is Acid jazz (A 3 CD box set)

Also some groups you may be familiar with that I like very much are:

    Incognito
    D-Influence
    Swing out Sister
    Galliano
    Groove Collective

to name a few. I am a big listener and fan of this music and am happy to hear you are too. The CD compilation you mentioned, what label is it on? I would like to look for it. I find anything on the Instinct label is usually very good. I'm also, glad to hear you like Billy Paul. I have a best of Billy Paul double LP which is fantastic. Seems like our tastes, along with Blaxman, vary, but are all very good.

Sammy, I have the best of Billy Paul in a double CD, It´s amazingly good!!!! It contains several jazz tracks. Me and my wife spend hour listen it. Our favourite however, is "Thanks For Saving My Life". It's one of my all-time fave!

    Peace,

    Blaxman

Great song Blax; I just played that song a couple of weeks ago. I told Jazz you had great taste. By the way, great topic on all-time bass players. I chimed in recently with a few. Looking forward to your playlist for Saturday.

Sam - I should have mentioned the full title of this CD series ..."Diggin' Deeper - The ROOTS of Acid Jazz". They have dug back into the Seventies mainly, and have come up with a brilliant mix of hard '70s funk and jazz. really really good. Funnily enough, I picked up the 2 Cds in the series In have in Poland (where my wife's family live) ... cost between six and eight dollars.. Try amazon.co.uk as they were UK releases ...

I can't give you the label at present 'coz I'm at work !!
