I found a James Brown LP the other day at the fair, without sleeve, that I buyed inmediately thinking it had Bootsy Collins on it. It's a local edition called "Sex machines" (SIC), with no mention of label and the catalogue number 0399, and it certainly starts with a half-side long version of "Sex machine (Parts 1 & 2)", only that here it's called also "Sex machines" (why that "s"?). I understand Bootsy was in the band at the time of the first recording of the song.
However, on hearing the LP I have a mixed response. This is a different version than the one we hear on most JB CD compilations. It SOUNDS different, clearly like it's really made around 1970 (I now see the version I knew sounds too bright to be the original). And the voice is clearly Brown. But is this James Brown, or the JBs doing the boss tunes, or a strange compilation, or what?
Here's the tracklist, which does not coincide with AllMusic.com listings of JB albums. All are studio tracks:
Side 1
1-Sex machines (Part 1 and 2)
2-My part/Make it funky (Part 3)
3-Cold sweat
4-Make it funky (Part 1)
Side 2
1-Soul power
2-Give it up or turnit a loose
3-Sexy sexy sexy
4-Slaughter theme
5-Honky tonk (Part 1)
6-Say it loud (I'm black and I'm proud) (Part 1)
"Slaughter theme" and "Sexy sexy sexy" are featured on the 1973 Slaughter's Big Rip-off soundtrack, so this could be really a compilation. But the other songs have so many versions... It could be anything. And who's playing?
Help will be appreciated.
